The epic wheelchair song. Robert Plant paid the price with a torn achilles after trying to navigate over speaker cables in the studio while on crutches and he wound up reinjuring his shattered ankle from a car wreck in Greece which he and wife Maureen were damn near killed. He recalled being on a stretcher in the local Rhodes infirmary, and the guy on the next gurney was singing "The Ocean" to him while he was swatting away cockroaches. Manager Peter Grant had Plant and his wife airlifted the hell out of there back to London for immediate medical treatment, and this record was written while recovering later in Malibu. Plant sounds pretty good for a guy in a wheelchair with his leg elevated.

Never a big Zep fan growing up, but I bought the 8-track of Presence for a cheap price in the cut-out bin. My attachment to this song came from a night of partying and waking up late for a job where I had to open a convenience store. I drove the backroads at an insane speed, and Achilles Last Stand was the soundtrack.

Shortly after its release, probably by about 1978, this album was in the bargain bins in department stores: the only Zep album to have that distinction. Even then most people didn't understand the greatness of this band. I love this album.

This song was the "highlight" for me when I saw the mighty Zeppelin at Madison Square Garden in June of 1977. (No I wasn't there on the night they recorded their "live" material.) Who would have thought, just 21 nights later, I saw a band in concert that made me forget all about Led Zeppelin the rest of that summer. Pink Floyd at South Phillys Spectrum, during their, "In the Flesh" tour promoting the great, "Animals" album. As powerful, great and stupendous as the guys in Zeppelin were that evening, it is the Pink Floyd show that I always remember most vividly. Pure perfection.

This song has a combination of influences. It basically tells the story of trips Jimmy and Robert took to Morocco. The tongue-in-cheek title is a reference to Robert's car crash injuries being compared to Achilles' weak heel, where if Achilles got hit there, he would die. There's a bit of William Blake's poetry when he mentions Albion. "Albion" used to be a poetic way to describe Britain. The "mighty arms of Atlas" refer both to the mythology of Atlas holding the world on his shoulders, as well as the Atlas Mountains in Morocco. This song is intense. I consider it the last of their "Epics" along with Stairway and Kashmir. Jimmy had 6 guitar tracks and managed to assemble and complete the entire song in one night. The album as a whole was completed in three weeks; the fastest they'd worked since their debut album. The staccato drumming sounds like a machine gun and Jonesy's galloping bass line imply swift, anxious movement. Ann and Nancy Wilson from Heart readily admit they stole the bass line for their song Barracuda. Robert tells a story about a time he had a friend over to visit and while they chatted, he had music playing. At one point, he stepped out of the room and shortly thereafter, his guest came looking for him and told him they didn't want to be in the room alone anymore because the music playing was too intense. Intrigued, Robert came back to the room and the song playing was Achilles. This entire album is massively underrated; it is full of intensity, anxiety, anger, pain, - a lot of difficult emotions.

Been listening to Zep since ‘75 and with each listening of my old albums I come away with a deeper appreciation of each band member’s talents and contributions. At the time of this album’s release this song was Jimmy Page’s most sophisticated composition, and it shows. Bonzo’s timekeeping is nothing short of glorious and, as always, accompanying Page’s playing: not something every drummer does or can do.

My favorite Led Zeppelin song of all time. Been listening to LZ since 1996. That 25+ years of listening to all of their music. I was in high school when I discovered Zep and theyre my 2nd favorite band of all time. I love them way too much. Funny side note: Many years ago me and 2 of my cousins went to see a tribute band called Led ZepAgain. After every song when the crowd would quiet down a bit, my cousins and I would yell out "Achilles". After about 45 minutes of yelling, guess what? They fucking played it! And it was glorious! They played it so well. They sounded incredible. I highly recommend LZ fans to look up Led Zepagain on KZbin. Theyre great.

You used perfect words to describe it. The thundering drums with lightening fast fills, the bass galloping across holding the bottom down, the beautiful guitar lines and chords, and the voice soaring right above the musical landscape. It sounds like it should be the music played at a huge I MAC screen over a scene of a Greek army racing across the the Sahara desert at dusk.

Sorry so late Biz, I'm trying to play catch-up with ur recent vids!! Been looking forward to this one!!🙃 And yes, like u said.... this song is nothing but genius. Thing is.... with these 4 guys, it was nothing but magic creatively between them!! That's why when Bonham died they decided to dis-band rather than replace him. As Robert said in an interview once: "It wouldn't be Zeppelin anymore. The magic was between the 4 of us."!! Now, if I had to choose (which u ALWAYS ask us to do!!🤦♀️😅).... "Nobody's Fault But Mine" might be my favorite on this album!🤷♀️ Although, my favorite tune off any album changes with the wind, my mood, or even what's going on in my life at any given moment!!😉😁🤣😂 Regardless of all that.... I think my favorite Zep album is actually "In Through The Outdoor"!! They had matured, had a ton of stuff going on in their personal lives and their relationships with each other. Much like Fleetwood Mac and all the turmoil in their lives.... it created some INCREDIBLE music!!!🤩 Now, speaking of "IN THROUGH THE OUTDOOR".... if you haven't got there by July..... PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE 🙏🙏🙏🙏 consider skipping ahead to song #2 on side 2 of that album for July 26th!!! SERIOUSLY!!🤗🙏🙏🙏🙏 The song is "All My Love" and Robert wrote it right after his 5y/o son Karac died on July 26, 1977. Zeppelin was on their North American tour, here in New Orleans when Robert got the call saying his baby boy had passed of complications with a common stomach bug.😪 They canceled that show and the rest of the tour, and writing that song is what helped Robert in his healing process. It's a killer song, and actually a REALLY nice switch-up for Zep. SOOOO...... PLEASE consider (🤦♀️ if u can remember anyway!!😜😅🤣) to do and release your reaction to "All My Love" on or by July 26th, even if u have to skip ahead to it!!!!!! This year marks the 45th anniversary of little Karac's passing. It would be a nice tribute to Robert and his boy!🤗 I haven't seen anyone jump on that opportunity yet. I'm sure most people don't even know that was the inspiration for the song.... you'd be the first to do it!!👊 Just saying!!😁 Anyway, I've rambled far too long so I'll just say.... freaking great reaction as ALWAYS!!💯💯💯 Zep rocks and so do YOU!!😎 See ya on the next one fam....😘❤ P.S. I was only 5y/o myself in July '77 and plus, we didn't have the internet back then SOOOO.... NO ONE knew the inspiration for "All My Love" til years later. It's a special song!!

Robert sang this song in a wheelchair, due to the terrible accident he had suffered and that forced the group to cancel tours. It's not just the operation on his vocal cords, it's that it was not known if he would be able to walk well again, everyone was nervous and depressed. This album was recorded in just 18 days, especially the result of Page's dedication. J.P. Jons was a little absent, Bonzo a little drunk, Plant in a wheelchair. Without a fixed home, because of taxes, like gypsies, at the peak of fame, nervous, full of fury and rage. THIS IS AN IMPRESSIVE SONG and given the circumstances even more so.
@charliecochran30352 жыл бұрын
Like you said, the lyrics only matter if you want them to. I've known this song for 30+ years and couldn't recite a single line. It's a sonic piece of art and Robert's vocals are just part of rhe soundscape as far as I'm concerned. He could hum or yodle the whole time as long as he hits the notes he hits with the same timing.
