That was the entire point of the film. Joker even speaks on the dichotomy of man during the movie, and the movie depicts the dichotomy of military service during wartime. Hell, the first half is more stressful than the combat, which is actually fairly accurate to real life.

If your wondering. That movie was filmed were MCRD San Diego is at. And the DI school is there and I lived next door ro the achool and was utilized a few times. @@nordicfalcon I feel as thought it was a good transition, it showed how hard training could be under the wrong circumstances and it also showed the brutality of the war. We get to travel with joker on this venture and watch him passively hate the war and then kill an unarmed and down woman because of what she did to their unit. It really shows growth. @@anheuser-busch I would say neither in reality. Like people wouldn't think about enlisting and then remember this scene and then either decide to do it or reconsider. That's just not how people make decisions. They wouldn't have needed to watch the movie to know that boot camp was extremely harsh. Apperently things have toned down, because they realized that they just create monsters by subjecting people to terrible hostile treatment and it doesn't really make better soldiers after a certain point. Sure you can weed out weak people and harden other people, but it's basically subject to diminishing returns and the people who do the best out of everyone are actually psychopaths under such intense circumstances. They still make you do alot of excersizes and yell at you, but they don't straight up torture you and force everyone to get cut throat with each other and constantly and give people crazy punishments like they used to.

Have watched this film more than a dozen times. The first two times as a 14 year old who snuck in the theatre with my best friend and we watched it twice that fine day in 1986. I have since owned this film on VHS, DVD, and Blu Ray. R. Lee Ermey elevated the 1st part of the film, immeasurably. Have quoted Gunnery Sgt. Hartman, lovingly, ever since. Loved him on Mail Call, too. Probably saw every episode at least once. Thank you for all your service to our country, R. Lee Ermey. Semper Fi.
