Love Trevino. He was a Marine and a golf hustler as a young man. Nothing but respect for Lee. He is the embodiment of a self made success.

From what I have read about him, Cliff Roberts was a flaming a-hole. The Augusta National Club excluded any minority from membership, including Catholics, under his reign. It took until 1961 for the PGA Tour to drop its "Caucasian only" membership rule and Charlie Sifford was the first Black to get a Tour card. The Masters took longer, finally allowing its first Black player in 1975, Lee Elder. While Dictator Roberts ruled Augusta, all golfers were white and all caddies Black until 1975. Roberts passed in 1977 but it still took a few years for the golfers to use their own caddies. I can see why Lee Trevino boycotted and I respect him for standing up for any and all minority pro golfers. I have much respect for Lee's golf talent and his principles.

He's not alone,the great amateur golfer Frank 'Muscles' Stranahan also had a falling out with Roberts and said that if he had been passing when Roberts shot himself he would have willingly tipped him into the creek to make sure.

Here in Philadelphia, someone once told me a story about Arnold Palmer. Supposedly he was doinking the wife of a local car dealer here . The car dealer was a family member of the mob. It was either beak his hands so he could never play again or leave Philadelphia and never come back.

One thing you have to say about Golfers they put the work in nobody hands out PG a tour cards. If you're not top 150 players in the in the world You don't get to play. No posers in golf you're either good and make it or you go home. What they do on their private time is their business

Lee has done well having had back problems back in the day. He used to really unload that coil on the ball. I suspect that is what led up to his problem. Recently, it appears he has had problems with his Arthur itis knee pain. Thanks to Arthur itis knee pain centers he is doing better now.

I personally have a policy of never playing at private clubs and no way would I ever set foot on Augusta - my experience is that elitists are more often than not pretty troubled people; self centered with cold hearts and inferiority complexes - who needs to be around that? Not me (I have volunteered at several PGA & LPGA tournaments & the experiences there have only confirmed my distaste for “better than thou” type folks)

Augusta National is a private, members only club. The pros are invited huests. Regardless of personal feelings or mores of the day, ANGC can do what they want for the benefit of the club. If you do not like the bylaws of any club, you can avoid them or start your own club.
@Diogenes-ty9yyАй бұрын
True, but if you want to host a PGA Tour tournament, you cannot discriminate membership based on race. When the Tour implemented this policy some years back, Valhalla had to change and so did Augusta. But, Butler National GC near Chicago, which once hosted the Western Open, did not and subsequent Westerns were held at Cog Hill. Has anyone heard of Butler National lately? Neither have I.

It is a shame that Trevino declined to play Augusta for three years in the prime of his career. If he had won, he could have played there forever just like Nicklaus, Player and Watson. Trevino's private war with Roberts simply happened too early. Trevino did have a point about Roberts and his dictatorial rules. Roberts didn't like French fries, therefore he banned them from the menu in the clubhouse. He didn't like them, so no one else could have them. Ridiculous. I would love to know what Trevino's thoughts were when he heard the news that Roberts had shot himself out on the par-3 course.

Lee is not the only golfer with scars under his belt, but for the past 20 years it appears that Tiger was/is the only golfer with scars when the media knew there are many alcoholics, drug abusers, wife cheaters, raciest (don't serve fried chicken or collard greens at the Masters next year), and it would be kinda fresh to hear about other golfers. Just don't stop at Lee. Let us know about others that cheated on their wives. I know it will never happen because it would put a lot of stain on many golf heros.

Sorry to burst any bubbles - Jack is clean and boring, but Arnie on the other hand…
@Diogenes-ty9yyАй бұрын
@@rortys.kierkegaard9980 Arnie was an icon and, in those days, the media would not publicize anything that might cast a stain on his reputation. The attitude of the press towards a star athlete reminds me of a story about Babe Ruth. The Yankees were going on a road trip in the 1920s and the reporters accompanying the team were in the club car at the back of the train, drinking and playing cards before departure. Suddenly, the door opens and Babe Ruth runs in and runs to the door to the next car. A few seconds later, a woman carrying a butcher knife runs in past the reporters and follows the Babe to the next car. After a few moments, one reporter stands up and says, "Gentlemen, we all need to agree right now that we really didn't see what we just saw." It was the same for Arnie, other golfers, and other famous athletes, what was seen was kept secret once upon a time.

Well I met Lee Trevino at the Kona Airport, we were on the same flight back to Oahu in 2002 or so. Trust me that jovial banter is an act for the cameras and crowds. I told him "if I am not mistaken you are a former winner of the Hawaiian Open." He said in the most condescending, narcissistic and conceited way "You have me confused with someone else..." the rest of what he said was full of ridicule for not knowing who he was or what I was talking about....his wife's nose was even more stuck up in the air. Of course I was right, the 2nd win of his pro career was, you guessed it, The Hawaiian Open in 1968.

So if Lee were allowed to buy extra gallery tickets, word would spread and nearly every other player would want to buy extra tickets also, thus leading to a larger "mob" gallery.
@kyle381000Ай бұрын
I doubt that. Roberts was probably worried that friends of Trevino were not exactly typical Masters patrons. At the time, Trevino was already a U.S. Open Champion. If Roberts was so keen on making rules, then he could also make exceptions. He was a dictator.
