This is why I watch beginner videos despite having played drums for some ten years. I am self taught, so I look for basic things I never learned, and today I learned why the hi-hat is tilted.

As a drummer over 40 years, nobody can't imagine how difficult this is for me. Always used the hi-hat otherwise than on two and four. I'm crazy mad I feel like a big fool, my level is far under a beginner, while my mistakes are like burned in deeply. BUT, I'm starting now and keep on practicing. Thank you Rob, and greetings from the Netherlands. 🤘

Same. On and off drummer for 40 years! I never really incorporated the left foot like this other than half assed 2 & 4; and not well either. He has another hi hat foot video that is also fantastic. I’m getting there and my basic grooves sound so much fuller. All my favorite drummers have this totally dialed - Jimmy Chamberlain as an example.

@@iCameForFlesh666 I play metal too, and I'm actually surprised at how many songs that I can play without using the hi-hat pedal at all - not very common in the genre I guess. It's why I never learned how to use it, but can still cover a lot of difficult songs by Megadeth and Metallica already lol. I feel like using the hi-hat pedal is the only thing I can't figure out how to self teach.

L.A DiNiro I am in the same situation. This video and Robs lessons are awesome and will help me & others break through things we either didn't work on when we were starting out or are just learning drums. Double bass is a huge foundation for my playing style using my feet similar to my hands. Heel toe has really put my style ahead of the competition but knowing how to incorporate the hhat is going to send me to the next level for sure. Thanks Mr Rob for these awesomely taught videos.

I live in Paraguay, where it is hard to find professional teachers, who are patient enough with an older lady, smile ... seeing your footwork now, base drum and hi-hat, you left me dumbfounded but eager to get this. I may need more time than the Youngsters, but your explanations are great. Thanks a lot, gracias y saludados ... Gabriele

I’m a returning drummer, having played semi-professionally to an advanced-intermediate level (being honest, I’ve never been professional/session ability). I went back to education had to sell my gear and now have a young family I have recently been in a position to buy a kit and get back to playing after a 12 year hiatus. I’m now relearning my muscle memory and learning things I should have learnt properly back in the day. Your tuition videos are great dude, proper grass roots skills that I can see will give a fantastic foundation from which to build. Keep them coming matey and thank you! 🤘

This video eased my woes. Driving in the car and limiting myself to only using my off foot for the bass drum tapping while I drive means im just over thinking it. I’ve played for 20 years now and never really thought to use the hi hat pedal in a groove, and have only really ever messed with it when I have to learn it for a song.

Play along with Rob. Get that muscle memory happening and may the groove be with you. It's nice to play along with all the pure backing tracks available on youtube once you have your brain and physical body in sync. Another cool video. The drum mics sound great with nice resonance from the snare BTW. 5 years after this was made I revisited the video just to think about the fundamentals and maintain an enquiring mind that wants to always learn and relearn as a drummer. Can't stop learning... and relearning your chops.

Great and informative bid as usual Rob. Would like to also add that the tilter screw, while helping to eliminate that choked, air pocket thing from happening, also has a very important function as it is what enables the wash of the top and bottom cymbals interacting. No bottom cymbal angle, no hi-hat splash.

Hey man, thanks for the vids. These are super inspirational to this recovering semi-pro. Just a thought on "independence". Now I remember a quote by Art Blakey stating that your 'left hand shouldn't know what your right hand is doing.' But the feeling I have is that it is all 'interdependent', co-related, and integrated...not to challenge what the master stated...BUT are we not integrating the entire body, like dance? If my hi-hat is keeping the quarters or subdivisions everything else, I feel, is anchored to that, related to that. I know that word has been thrown around us for decades but it may be outdated. Independent - not dependent on another...yet everything I play is stemming from everything else I play or choose to not play. With love and respect - Paul

I find that the left foot is the most neglected limb by self-taught drummers. Working through Gary Chester’s book, “New Breed, helped me develop my hi-hat independence, although I don’t believe one needs to do that. Whenever playing on the ride cymbal, I think it’s important to be able to play any groove, either playing the hi-hat on the down beats (1-2-3-4) or the upbeats (the “and” beats).

Wondering if you would be willing to go over how to set up the hi hat with regards to all aspects of the hi hat setup such as height compared to snare, space between cymbals, tilt of the bottom cymbal, foot pedal tension and then foot technique. I know it is a lot but I, as a beginning drummer am struggling a bit with that.
