A Plumbing van was blocking the passing lane for a few minutes(10 minutes before the start of the video) on the Interstate without giving me an opportunity to pass, so I decided to give them a courtesy call. He was going between 60-70 averaging low 60s, speed limit is 70 mph.

He should learn the law, vans travel at 60mph on duel carriageways & cars are allowed to travel at 70mph. Most commercial class of vehicles must obey slower speed limits on most roads. It's not that they want to drive that slow, it's because they have to or face possible infringements on their licences.

I shouldn't have to call and ask you to follow the basic rules of the road. Should I also call everytime you dont use your blinker? Or cross over solid white and yellow lines? Or how about running red lights? Or driving at night with no headlights on? Fuck you for thinking any of this is ok. Driving is an extremely serious exercise and if you cant remember the most simple of rule books(drivers handbook is 24 pages long with color illustrated pictures) then turn in your license and save us all the trouble

@chris77777777ify i apologize for the mean comments from other people here; anyways according to US law, you must follow the speed limit, but there is also lane etiquette which is just recently starting to be enforced in some states lane etiquette means you must keep right except to pass, it doesnt matter how slow or fast youre going. The left lane is only a passing lane, not a fast lane or cruising lane. e.g. you could be going 150mph but if the road is clear, you must stay on the rightmost lane

Last time i was a passenger in someone elses car, the driver kept camping in the passing-lane going the speed-limit. This type of thing upsets me greatly...to the point that he didnt notice the cop creeping up behind us because we were arguing about his being in the wrong lane. Cop pulled us over and asked if we knew why we were being pulled over; driver said no and i said i had an idea why we got pulled over. Driver sat there for another 10minutes and continue to argue with me AND the cop about how he was going the speed-limit and was passing trucks (mind you, this is on a freeway with 3+ lanes going in each direction). Long story short, driver got a ticket and the cop had us switch seats (so i was behind the wheel). When he went to court to fight it, he argued with the judge for nearly 20minutes before the judge threatened to find him in contempt of court and a license-suspension pending so many hours of drivers-training.

As a German, this is a very fringe situation to me. Here you get honked at and tailgated if you occupy the left lane 5 seconds longer than neccessary - and rightfully so. Thinking of it, you get tailgated at any speed below 250.
@kokorosenshi

I hate it when people tailgate me even when I'm not in the passing lane. That's why I slow down way below the speed limit. It's unsafe to tailgate other cars and the laws state you have to be a certain distance away from other cars depending on how fast you're going. Rule of thumb, 40 miles means 4 cars apart.

I had that same situation for 15 miles along that same stretch of road. Me and 20 other cars were stacked. Unfortunately for me the truck wasn't a commercial vehicle with a phone number on it (so clever!). A few performance cars were able to scoot around him on the right and that still never clue'd him in. How can anyone drive 15 miles and not get a clue. Against my usual "never use my horn" policy I decided it was time for the annual golden buzzer! After 15 miles a 2 mile long opening happened on the right. I was first in line, which of course means all the other cars behind me peal off in a way that cuts me off. So I'm the last one. I wait a bit longer and he still hogs the left lane, still clueless. I take my time passing him on the right with only about a 5mph gain and lay on the horn the entire time for 1/8th mile afterwards. Watching in the rear view mirror he still does not pull right until about another mile rolls by.

They place some in places for people call and complain repeatedly about repeated violations. We in the industry actually call them idiot signs because they only speak to people that ignore what already exists, drive in the rightmost lane except while passing and do your passing to the left and do not impeed. is already a law in each and every state. All of this is ignorance created because parents teach kids how to drive and scared Daddy's say just try to get in one lane and stay there to try to get more Lane and stay there and instead of teaching kids to change lanes like we are legally required to by law we have people that are taught in masses to get in one lane and stay there

Some of the thoughts on it were that these groups of people are less exposed to travel in their youth and long distance driving on highways due to the cost of petrol was generally limited. Thank you for posting. After having drove cross-country for 15 years, I've seen hundreds of these 'left lane hogs' and I'm convinced that many are unaware that they're impeding the flow of traffic and that by doing so are creating a dangerous situation... hence the reason blocking the left lane is against the law in a majority of States. A simple rule-of-thumb for highway travel that allows everyone to get to their destination comfortably is, "lead, follow or get out of the way". According to CBS news, 38 states have laws on the books to punish slow drivers squatting in the passing lane, in five of those states the fine is upwards of $1000. Let's all be safe.

Passing at that slow of a rate is stupid. Speed up a bit for the pass, especially since they were going mid-60's for a lot of this in a 70MPH zone in an area where people will easily pass that limit (I know this highway). And when there's a gap like after they passed the black semi, move over so the line of cars can pass you up and be on their merry way less annoyed. Don't stay in the passing lane just barely "passing" the cars in the right lane at your leisure. I get stuck behind people like this all the time that are "passing", but never move over and they are going at such a slow rate that they collect a line and people start rage passing on the right.

He isnt even doing anything wrong. He is overtaking, you dont need to weave from lane to lane all the time. There is a sweet spot and he was a little long but within the limits.

But as the description states, if correct on speed, the driver was impeding traffic. The left lane is for passing; that means getting around the cars in the right lane and then going back into the right lane yourself. The left lane IS NOT for driving consistently, it is used for passing. By passing the others cars while going below the speed limit, you are impeding the flow of traffic, thus possibly causing backups. The funny thing is, the van sped up some when he got around the tractor-trailers (may not be correct, but it seems like it to me).

Being that the Ford E-Series was indeed passing slower traffic, I don't see what the problem was. He may have moved right without that phone call once he passed that last truck.

Are you kidding? Red vehicle driver - you seem like a very selfish person... 1. that white van is PASSING slower trucks... that is what the left lane is for. It is a passing lane -HE WAS PASSING. 2. just because you, red jeep, want to go faster than someone else, doesn't give you right to have the way cleared for you (were you speeding?) No way you can accuse him of wrongdoing. Great video of showing your selfishness and the belief that YOU going faster is the most important thing.

lol awesome!! You guys are so lucky to have 70 mph limits. Here in Hawaii, we got the lowest freeway limits in the nation, 50 mph average and we are also in top 3 every single year in worst traffic in the nation with only 400k registered vehicles! It pains me that almost nobody thinks the two are related! smh

Farther away from the cities the speed limit becomes 75 mph. If you go to central Texas near Austin, there is a toll road with an 85 mph speed limit. Texas is a huge state, that's why we have these speed limits, haha. I imagine everyone is a lot more laid back over there in Hawaii. One of these days I'll pay a visit to your beautiful state.

All Lanes to the left of the rightmost lane are for passing only but calling "THE" left lane, as if there's only one left lane or only one passing lane, is inconsistent with law. (United States) the law is drive in the rightmost lane and pass to the left and every state has that law because it is a federal requirement that you state has that law and it's called Uniform Rules of the Road which does not allow one state to have left hand drive in that state and it is why States such as Montana that want to have no speed limit have been denied the full ability to do that by being denied Federal highway funds for not being consistent with Federal highway law. Considering this posting does not specify what state it is so I can only just randomly pick some states to example the point but Michigan MCLA 257.634 GA 40-06-40 FL 316.086 (2) TN 55-8-115 AZ 28-721 (b) This is not a short list of the states that have keep right except to pass laws because every state has a keep right except to pass law. so, keep right except to pass. the point being never impede faster vehicles so that's my response to the call out. Always drive faster than traffic to your right and always drive slower than traffic to your left and never impede faster traffic, it's the law.

Just because the van wasn't going as fast as you wanted it to go doesn't mean it wasn't using to left lane to pass. The van didn't move into the right lane just because you called him. He moved there because he just got done passing the two trucks. Was the van supposed to squeeze between the two trucks? As far as stepping on it to pass faster, being a company vehicle it was, perhaps that van had a speed limiter like the big rigs have. You just need to understand that with speed limits and traffic volume on the rise, you can't always get through. Would you rather be in California where it's still 55 for trucks? But at least you weren't tailgaiting and blasting your horn like so many other oafs do.

I hate lane hoggers but it looks in the video quite fast, so I'd say on or around the speed limit. He was overtaking, but slowly as was on the speed limit perhaps?? Then if so, was ok to stay there to overtake the next vehicle, slowly, as to pull into the right lane would endanger the truck he'd just overtaken. Or can the poster confirm if was noticeably below the limit? I hate lane hoggers but if I'm overtaking on or around the speed limit and someone's behind me flashing me to move over as they are speeding, I purposely take longer so as to educate them the speed limit. It just looks the same. Stalemate??

Not seeing the issue. Dude was passing people. It's what you do in the left lane. Sometimes, when you're only doing 5-10 over, you don't get back into the right when you're about to have to get back over in less than 5 seconds... just like in the video. And, hey, about the time you called, he was clear to get over. So it looks like you wasted your time calling and almost went off the road for nothing. Kind of reminds me of a jerk I had behind me in a 35mph constructiom site in Atlanta. I was doing 70 in the left lane (right lane was around 45-55) and steadily passing people. jerk still pulled up behind me and flashed at me like I was going too slow in the left lane. Why this was on Break, I have no idea.
