Well you can share a true connection with someone apart from your lover . Stefan and Lexi had that kind of connection. Did they love each other - yes , were they in love - no . In whole of originals it's more like Klaus wanting Camille as a friend and she wanting more . But in case of Caroline he wanted to be her last love which in case of vampires means a love for eternity. He never shied from opening up to her whereas Camille had to be his therapist to talk to him And also Klaus and Caroline had a connection too but they couldn't explore it . And if you observe it carefully Klaus and Caroline talked in terms of centuries and eternity which means they had plans to take their relationship slow and till the end .
