Also, when it comes to Korra's "patience". I think that there's a difference between impatience, and knowing when to cut your losses. In this case with Korra, I feel like it was more of the latter. They know the meeting with Zaheer was supposed to be at sundown, and it was sundown, and the guy didn't seem like he was about to leave at all. So I feel like Korra made the right assumption, that Zaheer wasn't going to show up, and that she just needed to cut her losses and just take the truth seer guy and press him for information. (Or as it turned out, follow him into the spirit world.)

When it comes to the fighting style changes, I think it was really cool the way they progressed bending. Like when everyone was in their own Nations, their benders were always separated, causing their fighting styles to become almost exclusive to that form of bending, with almost like a set number of moves you can learn. But as the walls between them break down, they mix their bending styles more as they learn the similarities between them. I feel like it becomes more about learning the way the elements are all apart of the world, and less about how the elements are distinct, which goes with the overall idea of different people coming together despite their past. Kinda the premise for Korra as a series.
@paulkearney70776 жыл бұрын
I agree to an extent. I love this series, but one of the things that I don't like is that each element has lost it's unique identity. Yes, I think it's only natural for the styles to evolve with greater contact, similar to how languages evolve. But at the same time, it's difficult to see the core teachings and styles at the HEART of each element. Everyone is super aggressive and making the same movements; I feel like Tonraq is just an earthbender who uses water, very different from Katara and Pakku. Even Tenzin with airbending is incredibly aggressive and on the offensive a lot, in stark contrast to Aang. Korra being more aggressive in her fighting styles makes sense because that's her attitude, even though she's from the Water Tribe, but even when she's using the more so-called passive elements like Air and Water, it just feels like she's throwing those core teachings away. That's just my take on it.
@Mohamedmifxal6 жыл бұрын
About the fighting style it was Iroh who adviced zuko to learn fighting styles of other nations. He learned to redirect lightening himself by doing so. Also it's only natural for fighting styles to merge in a city where benders from all nations live
@paulkearney70776 жыл бұрын
Oh no I completely agree that it's natural and honestly a great development for bending styles to adapt to take on other techniques and styles, but my issue is that each element doesn't feel unique or special anymore to me. They're all essentially fighting the same way but with different elements. I very much enjoyed the dynamic in ATLA of watching different core styles and fighting philosophies go head-to-head, whereas in LoK it's kinda just a mashup. It's like languages in the real world. Languages represent specific and unique cultures; even if it's the "same" but different variants, like English or Spanish, the separation created by the Atlantic Ocean allowed it to take on it's own identity to match it's culture. This to me is a perfect equivalent to bending. Bending has it's roots in culture and philosophy, so to see culture and philosophy mix is fantastic, but also a bit irritating when the core philosophies just kind of merge into one mega-style or philosophy.
@AhsimNreiziev6 жыл бұрын
+Matthew Nash +Paul Kearney It should be noted that the unique fighting styles of A:TLA haven't completely disappeared. In fact, quite a lot of Characters still use them -- especially older Characters. It's just that none of those Characters are part of Team Avatar, so we don't get to see them that much. However, if you want traditional, distinct Bending styles, look no further than Tenzin. True, he's more aggressive than Aang was, but then again we never had another Airbender to compare to in A:TLA, so we can't really say what is more "typical Airbender" between the 2. But my point being: the actual *style and moves* are the same with Tenzin compared to Aang. Or take Kya, for that matter, but Tenzin is a more prevalent Character than Kya is. In this Season -- heck, this Episode -- we also have Gahzan, who uses the traditional Earthbending style also found in A:TLA. And it's a bit more difficult to see due to her arms being water-tentacles, but I do think Ming-hua is using a "traditional" move-set to guide her Waterbending.
@paulkearney70776 жыл бұрын
That's a fair critique, I guess I was too heavily focused on Team Avatar II. And yeah, when I said Tenzin was aggressive, I was actually thinking about how he still uses the traditional style that Aang used, so I should have conveyed that thought.
@innocentdude49686 жыл бұрын
They actually have a marital artist for The Legend of Korra that recorded reference videos too. What Eric is talking about is just the difference between Chinese Martial Arts and Mixed Martial Arts. The storyboarding and animation are about equal in terms of quality, so it all comes to preference. The bending in ATLA is also much more grander, to capture the epic scale of the war. The Gaang would fight like 25 guys at a time in these grand battles. In LOK, that doesn't happen. The fights are much more intimate.
@wheybig29723 жыл бұрын
How I like to describe it is here in LOK people are more bending black widows whereas in ATLA as you said the fights are more grandiose and they’re more Thor like. With ATLA the fights are more bending oriented but in LOK it’s more fight oriented.

In this show all the 4 nations are united, so the knolage, fight styles and bending techniques are pased to every nation, that's why so many fire benders know how to bend lightning, since lightning projection and control is based on a water bending technique, before that each nation had their own costumes, but now they share everything to make a more united nation, all by the influence of Aang and the Team Avatar!

Crazy fanwoman was voiced by Grey DeLisle as well :P Now you know how Zaheer knew Korra was at Zaofu. He was meeting with Aiwei in the spirit world, who was basically his informant. How is Zaheer able to do that? If it wasn't clear at this point yet, it appears that like Unalaq, he's very spiritually aligned with himself as well as being well-versed in spiritual matters. He did say that he has always been fascinated by the teachings of the air nomads and as we know, the air nomads out of everyone were the most spiritual. After hearing some more of Guru Laghima's philosophy and teachings, it makes me think that he must've been ...well, very different from the other air nomads lol
@cichy456 жыл бұрын
About Guru Laghima - not necessarily. From what we know Air Nomads were semi-stateless nation that valued freedom. Aside from that we don't know how much Laghima's philosophy influenced Red Lotus. I can imagine Laghima wouldn't be happy about assassinating all world leaders despite him being Anarchist / Libertarian.

In the last airbender the audience is learning bending along with the characters but in Korra the audience already knows bending and the characters are already pretty good at bending. The creators of Korra didn't want to sort of drag things out just like they didn't want to rely on older nostalgic characters and concepts. But if we treat bending like a magic system TLA was better at explaining the system then Korra was. Korra focuses on philosophy more then the magic system itself.

The reason why the bending change is because since the four nation aren't separated anymore, you can see that each bender use technique from other bending just like Iroh taught to Zuko in the original avatar serie
@LordZeebee6 жыл бұрын
It's also really interesting to see how different airbending is in Korra as opposed to the original series. With Aang being the Avatar his airbending grew very different from traditional techniques and you can definitely see that in Tenzin's bending. Just like how Aang first used his airbending in a purely offensive way only after understanding earthbending, Tenzin's bending is way more direct and aggressive than Aang's first was. He thinks less like a traditional airbender and more like an avatar, dodging, redirecting but also being forceful and facing things head on when it's the best option. He's not just Aang's child, there's a bit of Toph, Zuko and obviously a whole lot of Katara in him too.

Personally I really like the MMA style fighting, it really makes sense too with the modern world and the different cultures blended together. It's in the name, "mixed" martial arts! All of the styles blending together is a natural result of the modern world, with modern types of travel and communication. And the process of the styles blending together had actually already begun in ATLA, with Iroh for example studying the other elements and basing his bending techniques on them, and of course the Avatars themselves were able to study each different element, and use that knowledge to improve their skill with the different elements as well. There's a reason why old school kung-fu is old school, it's outdated, MMA constantly takes the most useful fighting techniques and constantly improves because of that, it's like natural selection for fighting, and it makes sense that many of the flashy and distinct moves have turned out to not be that effective, and that they've all adopted more streamlined kinds of fighting. (Personally though I still feel like you can still really tell the difference between all 4 elements, and that you can still tell the skill that is involved.) Old school fighting styles worked, because there wasn't that much information, and they didn't encounter that many vastly different fighting styles, which means that it takes much longer for people to notice the holes in your fighting style, because everyone nearby has more or less the same holes in their defense and more or less the same attack techniques. When you suddenly encounter a different culture with a different fighting style, or like with LOK, all of the cultures are suddenly thrown together, then all of these holes are noticed and improved much more quickly, simply because these other cultures have different kinds of attacks, and are therefore able to exploit certain holes in each other's defense more easily.

Plus, Republic City is clearly based on New York, whereas the Four Nations as they existed in _Avatar: The Last Airbender_ were very much based on East-Asian cultures. So it would make sense that the fighting styles that developed in Republic City would have a more Western influence rather than Eastern ones. I also wonder if it feels less 'distinctive' to us because we, as a Western audience, are more familiar with the style(s) than we were with A:TLAs styles? For example, Boxing is not the same as MMA, and both are used for Bending in _The Legend of Korra_ .
@lalalalisa416 жыл бұрын

Apart from "specialization" in bending, another significance among the Red Lotus members we know is that they have a great natural connection to the Spirit world. Aang's only natural-born Airbender, the sole air bending master for decades, cannot connect to the Spirit World and he's devoted his entire life to do so. We know that spirit connection is "gifted" to a select few--- Jinora can do exactly what her father has attempted all his life with the greatest of ease. It is not a coincidence that three of six featured Red Lotus members have powerful Spirit connection: Zaheer, Unalaq, Aiwei. According to Zaheer, the Red Lotus being originally intended for mentoring the Avatar not just on the physical but on spiritual side of bending. And it makes sense. One of the high ranking leaders, if not the highest ranking of the White Lotus in ATLA is Grand Lotus Iroh. It is also not a coincidence that a high ranking member of the original and "ideal" White Lotus is spiritually connected. That was what the original Red Lotus wanted to emulate. An order that guides the Avatar spiritually, not glorified body guards that the White Lotus has turned to.

Since Zaheer mentioned Xai Bau as the founder of the Order of the Red Lotus, do you think Avatar Studios released an animation about the early years of the Red Lotus?

It’s Guru Laheema not Jaibou.

Korra's learning is similar to aang's but she is learning the spiritual side of being the avatar as she already knew the physical side.
@jasonsmith30325 жыл бұрын
They got weapons they're probably not benders. . . Aang had a staff, Zuko had twin blades, and the Bei Fong forces literally use their bending to manipulate their weapons. . .

I know this is not related to Korra but posting since its your latest vid. Why has the RWBY reactions stopped? RWBY is one of my favorite shows right now and love watching your reactions to it. I thought you all got the okay from Rooster Teeth to post reactions or has it changed since you all posted the last RWBY reaction?

Declan McKenna alright thanks for the info, sucks that they cannot do the reviews as they come but it will be alright to wait

It would be awesome if you started a reaction series on Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency! It’s such a great show! All the best!

Xi bao is not the air bender guru, he was the founder of the red lotus. Guru wahima was the air bender. (Forgive my spelling)

Highly recommend watching the Kay and Skittles video on the politics of Korra. Still love the show, but how they write anarchy can be pretty glaring

Well Zahere has always been extremely spiritual and knowledgable about air bending and the spirits, with thirteen years in prison i have no doubt that Zahere traveled there many times.

Why doesn't macco use his lightning? We know he can. Since only another master fire bender can redirect it, it would seem like you should use it all the time. That's what Azula would do; it was very effective.

Jaibao is not guru lahima, guru lahima is a spiritual monk who live about 4000 years ago, while jaibao(sorry if i spelled it wrong) is the one who created the red lotus after the 100 year war, amd he won't come up in the story again unlike guru lahima

The less distinctive fighting style of LOK may be more to do with the fact that the nations are now mixing together, we know that Korra is pure water tribe but Mako, Bolin, and Asami are a mixture of fire and earth kingdoms so their cultures would blend into one.

I think he meant that there shouldn't be a person as powerful as the avatar. That's what he wants to turn the world back to. Before the avatar.
