When Tarlok Blew up the boat, I was so shocked that I had to pause the show and just wrap my head around it for 10 minutes, no show has shocked me as much as that very moment did. I think it's because I didn't expect anything like that from a rated Y7 show, even knowing that it's a sequel to Avatar.

With the whole "lowest moment" argument, imagine you were in your shoes. Her LITERAL DESTINY is supposed to be her mastering the elements, That's her duty as the avatar. When she loses her powers, all of a sudden she realizes that she not only failed her task, she failed all of her past lives. All of that weight suddenly came crashing down on top of her and in that moment all she could do was express her deep sadness and depression that is tied to the fact that she failed in the most monumental way she could. That sudden feeling of helplessness was her lowest moment, because she could not prepare for such a devastating event or ever dream of what had happened to her. (I have other comments about the gaining her powers back bit, but I've typed enough.)

They’ll not saying that it was a bad idea, they just thought the execution was sloppy. Such a moment didn’t even last more than a minute and it honestly left me irritated because they’ve could’ve really have taken their time at a moment like this. I would kill for just one episode of Korra and Aang’s spirit just journey with her as he helps her explore her spiritual side and restore her powers. I mean think of the possibilities that could’ve been accomplished. Korra gets to develop a past Avatar connection like Aang and Roku had. We would get explore a bit of Adult Aang. It would’ve made the moment she goes into the Avatar State for the first time a million times more uplifting and emotional. And to just top it off, imagine if the only other person who would witness Korra get her powers back by Aang would’ve been Katara. Then before he fades away, they interact one last time, like a tearful smiles and a caressed cheek. I bet we all be drowning in tears had they gone that route. But they didn’t, what a wasted opportunity.

Her not being able to be the avatar is a GOOD point. But she still could have lost more. Her lowest moment doesn't happen in Season 1, it happens in Season 3 when she's in a frickin wheel chair and is suffering from PTSD. She suffers worse later on.

I agree, but this is definitely a situation where the behind the scenes does allow me to forgive the flaws somewhat. They only had so many episodes to work with so of course it feels rushed, and the thing is, we know that these guys would have done something amazing with Korra losing her powers and going through depression if they had the time (see season 3/4 for proof) but they only had one episode, they made it work as well as they could, and I still think that it was very satisfying. If that had been the last episode (as they planned) I would have been ok with it.

The biggest flaw that Korra is always going to suffer is the fact that it's not Avatar. Avatar is a fantastic and near perfect masterpiece. Korra is absolutely fantastic and smart also, it's not perfect but it's flaws are so minor that were they not held under such heavy scrutiny due to their past work, they would have been ignored. This show is something fantastic and it's a shame that we don't have more. 4 seasons wasn't enough of this great series.

honestly, I think 4 seasons was one too many. Season 3 was amazing, but season 4 felt like it was dragging on, and they invented a villain out of nowhere just to have a Fire Nation 2: Metal Boogaloo. Also, I hated the Earth prince so much.

@@FwendlyMushwoom Also, "invented a villain out of nowhere" doesn't make much sense. That clearly happened with season 2's Unalaq and Vaatu, not season 4's Kuvira. Season 4's main antagonist had been introduced and highlighted several times in the 3rd season, hinting at her significance in the future. She also had many viable reasons to go as far as she did, and we even had a believable time frame of 3 years until she started to actually joint cities and towns to the Earth Empire (it wasn't immediate). So, I'd heavily disagree with you on that. I thought Kuvira was well prefaced as a villain.

I understand what they were saying about it ending on a happy note in sort of a rushed way, but I just really liked the fact that the Avatar is actually _so_ powerful that you can't actually take away his/her bending. It's hard to explain, but I really like the ending.

@Nathan-tz5fr
@Nathan-tz5fr 8 жыл бұрын
The lion turtle conveniently appeared right before Aangs battle with the firelord, and provided him with an unexpected power that resolved his hopeless moral dilemma. This makes it a Dues Ex Machina. The fact that they had been hinted at in the library episode is irrelevant. The TV show never explained what they were or what they could do.
@Ruminations09
@Ruminations09 7 жыл бұрын
+BlackGirlFly Lion Turtles as a concept existed in the most dubious way possible (they were only mentioned once, and that one time was them pointing out the art of a Lion Turtle in a book), but their powers were never once explained until they were given to Aang. The ability to take away bending was never even mentioned as a possibility until the series finale. There is no way to argue that Aang learning to take away banding wasn't a Deus Ex Machina. It was one of the rare occasions where it was actually a satisfying Deus Ex Machnia, but that doesn't change the fact that it was one.

Good points, Korra is still learning because she isn't spiritually mature, she wants to help everyone. I think it also shows that Korra is afraid of what she could lose, not what she has lost and that's her driving force for not wanting to lose Mako, like how Katara was unsure with Aang because of the uncertainty of the future, post-war. I agree that it was rushed but maybe its not necessarily about Korra overocming loss. Its introducing her fear.
@arcaedonluminos666
@arcaedonluminos666 8 жыл бұрын
I would prefer it if Korra regained her powers through her journey in the next season, which is all about spirits. She could learn how to regain the powers herself, maybe after learning about the first avatar, Wan. Also, the love triangle should never have been there, it was a hindrance which made the first 2 seasons worse than they needed to be. Couldn't we just have Maco x Asami and Korra x Bolin, who really seamed to bond together nicely? Not this forced relationship between Maco and Korra. Maco already had Asami ffs and Korra didn't like him at first. Both first seasons would be so much better and would reach the same level as season 3 and 4, if not better! Also, I wish the show had more episodes. Better to have 20 episodes with in depth storytelling and character development, than a rushed story on 12 episodes.

I never really felt like Korra getting the elements back was a deus ex, because the power of taking elements away was set up as an avatar power in ATLA, turning that around to return powers simply makes sense, and Korra hadn't gone into the Avatar State yet, and the Avatar State gives you the knowledge of past Avatars. So she reached her lowest point and entered the Avatar State, which gave her access to Aang's knowledge and able to give herself her bending back. Of course it's still kind of out of nowhere, but the technicalities make sense. It didn't feel too quick to me either, because again, she'd never gone into the Avatar State before. And they made a point out of showing how important bending is to her as a character, so this was totally believable as her lowest point, and that kind of emotion has always been able to trigger the Avatar State.

continuing my rewatch in conjunction with these vlogs. omg i forgot how fast Korra gets her powers back. there was so much they could have done with an avatar having lost their powers. like we don’t have to redo the whole learn all the elements again . but it could have been seeing Korra really having to deal with the loss . using it as an way for her to connect with the spirits world in search of it back yadda yadda. i know similar stuff comes up later in the show but the transition would have been so much better from season 1 to season 2

*Spoilers* It would have been *SO* much better if Korra had to only use airbending for all of season 2, compensating for her inexperience in said element. Then, either: a) got the rest of her bending abilities back due to harmonic convergence, or b) had developed her spiritual side and, as a result, had eventually been aided in getting her bending abilities back from Aang, like in the end of season 1-- but with more time and explanation. Both of those scenarios would have made season 2 have an amazing and powerful finale, with an epic battle between Una-Vaatu and Korra, having regained elements. After nearly losing her life in battle against him, she suddenly comes to a realization that her bending is back, much like in season 1 finale when she abruptly discovered airbending, and eventually gotten the upper-hand on Unalaq. Would've been an awesome plot-twist. Not only that, but it'd be able to smoothly tie in people-- such as Zaheer, suddenly gaining the ability to airbend in season 3. One of many major issues with season 2 is it had *nothing* to do with season 1, besides the fact she could go into the avatar state and had all her bending abilities restored. If they went with the route above, it would have played out so much nicer, and provided better development for Korra rather than her just getting pissed off at Mako every episode. And while some could argue, "they didn't know whether they would get a new season or not," it wouldn't be the first time a cancelled show had left on a cliff-hanger-- just look at TRON: Uprising. If anything, a cliff-hanger like Korra only having air in her arsenal would've attracted a lot of attention and made a second season much more likely.

I'm surprised you never seem to mention over the series about making rare bending abilities so common, mainly lightning bending. It feels like everything about it in The Last Airbender that made it special is lost. Pretty much all of the good firebenders -Korra can do it pretty easily, especially Mako who can do it while he's being blood-bended. I know it was supposedly forbidden by anyone except for the royal family back in the day, but it still wasn't something anyone can pick up. Same with metalbending.

With the rise of media came the rise of more people having skills that would have been uncommon before, like master water bending scrolls could be shared and spread through media(along with other bending). So it's more widespread. For example tv's used to be a huge thing back in the day and now it's completely normal part of life.

Her entire IDENTITY was being the Avatar, which includes bending the elements. She felt she was no longer the Avatar despite having airbending. All she ever wanted was to be the Avatar. Remember, she was sheltered in the South Pole and not allowed to travel, so she never had any true real world experience before going to Republic City. I can actually relate to that. Losing her bending was indeed her lowest point.

Honestly I was fine with Korra getting her bending back in the end but I wish she would’ve gotten it back over time in the next season, that would’ve been a much better way to get her bending back. Also when she was on the cliff I think she was probably contemplating whether she should jump off or not, which I think is pretty subtle because I didn’t realize it as a kid but now as an adult it’s a lot easier to notice. But the thing I’m not fine with is Korra mastering the avatar state so quickly when it took Aang a lot longer even with help from a guru.

Absolutely agree with your opinions on Korra getting her avatar powers restored. I like the idea of Aang and the other past avatars giving it back to her, but honestly the execution of that was just way too fast and sloppy. Like within a minute, she gets her powers back after breaking down crying, I’m sorry, that’s just lazy writing there. I very much would’ve like an entire episode of Korra just speaking with Aang throughout the entire episode. Build up that past avatar connection like we got with both Aang and Roku. Make it an actual journey for her and it honestly would’ve made the restoration of her powers a million times more uplifting and emotional. Plus it would’ve given us the chance to explore the personality of Adult Aang. I mean, imagine if when Korra had her powers restored and Katara witnessed it. Then we see a moment of Aang’s spirit interact with Katara before he goes, like exchanging tearful smiles and Aang wipes Katara’s tears away before fading away.

It's called 'The Legend of Korra' because in many regions where 'bender' is a derogatory term for a homosexual, the show was marketed as 'The Legend of Aang' to avoid controversy. I suppose Bryke preferred that name or something when they decided to name the sequel series.

Jicko1560 James Cameron's Avatar came out in 2009. Unless the show was delayed an international release for a few years after the third season there shouldn't have been an market confusion yet. Although the movie that doesn't exist DID drop the "Avatar" title because of Cameron's movie.

i actually hate the first 1,5 seasons.... mostly because of korra herself. she's so childlish and hot-tempered, but in the second half of the 2nd season she starts to mature little by little and then the story starts off for me. Also korra's fighting style.. till teh end of the series looks just like her pro-bending techniques nand nothing changes. when you look back at the Aang and other avatars we've seen they had something up their sleeves and their bending was so cool and different (especially Kiyoshi) and korra is just stuck on this arena throwing punches with elements..or look at tough! her earth bending techniques are awesome.. why noone except her cannot do it after 70 years...

I must say, this series (particularly this season) was very disappointing and the story was rushed (and you have no reason to rush something after you stalled the story for so long), so I must disagree with them. And my main (but not only) complaint it this: You create a nice and threatening villain that comes out with a great problem/motivation: the societies in Avatar are solely controlled by bender and now that you have a society that is putting itself in motion and social mobility should become a reality, bender still control its core. And, in the end, not only the villain has a truly completely separated agenda and stupid relation to the story (that could come out of a Mexican soup opera), but this problem he brought to everyone’s attention is simply ignored as if it had never happened. It’s like if you had a society black and white people. The white folk are the minority, but control the majority of the economic and political power. Then a masked guy shows up and points this out, starting a movement to change it. But, in the end, when people take out his mask and find out that he is also a white guy (that was using this take down other white people that was in power and raise himself to it) they just go back to their lives as if the original problem do not exist! Ok, the guy is a phony, but what about the real issue?!? They just rushed out the ending. The guys is a phony and boom! Finish him and the season. Next time, let’s start a completely unrelated story.

Ac1dM0nk3y Nick has more than a fair share of the blame here, but this doesn’t change what the show was or what I’m saying. Besides that, all bad decisions Nick made during this season justify why they just gave her a happy ending, without any real consequence for her when it come to the loss of her powers (as was mentioned in the video), but it doesn’t justify how they ended the villain and the social issues in the story or why they never really came back to it at the next seasons. These things are on the writers. But again, my point is to "who" to blame, but "for what".

Thiago Leão Although rushed, I loved it. It’s very accurate to many real life social/political micro-revolutions that were snuffed out- Movement leaders have to be a persona and if they are killed or hurt, they are martyrs. If you shame them, people only remember their mistakes and forget the movement. That’s how the real world works- those that believe in a movement more often than not follow the leader- show the leader is a fool, no one will follow. Not to mention Amon’s goal is directly tied to his backstory- he thinks his fathers’ fucked up tyranny is a potential for all benders, so he becomes an icon. Preaches. People follow- he ends up being ousted, and then runs away as just a person and not a revolutionary leader.

the way they did korra losing her powers thing was really underwhelming tbh. "OH NO, HE TOOK MY POWERS!" "Hey korra, is ya boi ANG! heres yur power back." "I AM AVATAR ONCE MORE!!!" she had 4 minutes to cry about it, then it was all given back to her. not "i have to work for it" like ang, literally just "it was given to me" hell, her entire character is kinda annoying like that in a way. almost like a mary sue >Bending prodigy >helps everyone >just wants to do the right thing >all the boys want her >even the girl wants her >her only fault is being headstrong, and she is even praised and rewarded for that 90% of the time

Something that 'sorta' makes this ending fit is that Noatak/Amon's ability *isnt* Energybending. Its a dark combination of Tai-li's chi-blocking technique and Bloodbending. The idea that at her lowest moment, Aang is able to unlock her Avatar state and restore her power makes sense...she didnt lose her bending, she had it blocked. When we go back to Master Pakku (with his banana-onion juice) and his teaching of Aang about the Chakra's towards the Spiritual side of the Avatar, the idea of Aang awakening her Avatar State then unblocks her chi fits with the mythology of the Avatar. Remember, Pakku told Aang at the end of Season 2, that if he doesn't complete his training he wont be able to go into the Avatar State again. And indeed, during the battle with Azula, he incases himself in Crystals to complete the process and open that Chakra, allowing him to go back into the Avatar State again. So, oddly enough, the ending with Korra getting her powers back when she's awakened to her Spiritual Self, and getting her powers back, doesn't bother me. Ofcourse, thats requiring alot of Last Airbender notes writen down while watching this episode, so I guess its understandable :D

Jesica Techera Yeah, instinct at first, BUT she can Blood bend at will in the Southern Raiders episode so she was slowing learning and mastering this ability.. Also Ty lee used actual Chi blocking by hitting pressure points on the physical body (2x13).. So how does blood bending do the same effect as blocking Chi? he didn't do any Chi blocking attacks like Ty lee? He used blood bending to block her Chi paths.. which can be reversed by blood bending.. based on the already stated lore
