1996 there were as many people playing L5R as Magic at Gencon, because everyone was entitled to a free starter for L5R! The book was a great addition to the L5R world! Among my favorite CCG's were Magic, L5R, Battletech, Rage and Arcadia

In my group Rage was the big CCG. I never really got into any of them, but ended up getting random cards for them all, as the gaming store I went to used to put loose cards in your bag when you bought anything. So I've got random Doomtroopers, Magic, Sim City, and many other cards in my books as bookmarks :D

Never played it but loved the design. However, I incorporated the D&D 3e version of this "Oriental Adventures" & "Rokugan" into many PCs & fantasy rpg sessions.

I'm definitely impressed by LoFR, there's a lot to like in it. Although some areas it does seem weak in (the rules don't really support sword duels in the way that feels like the setting should have, but that might just be me being influenced by too many samurai movies when I was a teen).

Played this game for nearly 10 years straight from date of release - at one point the group was made up of 15 players, we all loved it so much. It was doubly interesting that in the MRB you basically played either a "fighter" or a "magic-user" and that was it. They introduced other "classes" later.
@RPGGamer9 күн бұрын
I did find it odd that a sneaky thief type character wasn't included as a class, although it does have options for playing as a ninja. Great game and I'm definitely glad that my viewers recommended it to me.

KZbin are outrageous for doing that and I guarantee those responsible are the very same people who were the focus of some of your recent videos. It worries me how the cold hand of AI seems to hover over a lot of these decisions, too. Msny of my comments on a recent conflict have been deleted for simply quoting verifiable statistics. This is how they win. Anyway, hope you stay enthused and I look forward to the next one

Thanks for the kind words of support. Absolutely, I do feel aggrieved that accusations of the Satanic Panic can be made without penalty, but if you counter them with facts, then you're penalised for it. If the accusations were equally penalised, I wouldn't feel so bad. I seem to remember some quote by perhaps Mark Twain? "a lie can travel halfway around the world before the truth puts on its shoes". Even more so when you're not allowed to tell the truth at all.

I'm a big fan of L5R. It, like Pendragon, has a focus on social roleplaying and in my experience doesn't suit players who prefer a more hack and slash kind of game. Great world and game.

I can see why. On a look through the rules, it doesn't seem to support sword duels as much as I feel (from loads of Samurai movies I watched as a teen) it should, but they seem solid rules and a lot of fun.

One of my favorite games as a player! The universe is pure japanese fantasy and so well done, with an exciting evolving background depending on CCG tournament results. If you speak japanese some names etc. may be a bit cringe or incomprehensible, but that's mostly very fine. And Mutant Chronicles CCG was Doomtrooper :) never played it though.
@RPGGamer9 күн бұрын
Doomtroopers, there's a name I haven't heard in so many years, but is undoubtedly a Mutant Chronicles spin off :D I believe I've got some cards for it jammed into my RPG collection as bookmarks, as one of the game stores I went to used to put loose cards in your bag when you bought things. Any word I haven't heard of before is always going to be a problem for me, I have a very slight speech impediment which I was taught to overcome by practicing saying words over and over. So if I've not said a word before, there's a good chance even if I know how it's supposed to be said, I'm going to mess it up.

There are many weird words on the cards as well, the Dark Legion villains, weapons etc. have names that are particularly hard to figure out the pronunciation! Don't know what the origin is, maybe a bit of Swedish.

@@quark_in_space Probably, as although it was always published in English, it was by a Swedish company.

Awesome. I am aware of L5R from its cousin game: 7th Sea (co-authored by John Wick, and a game which I would love if you would take a look at some point in the future). I'm really looking forward to the Rules Breakdown because I know very vaguely about how this game plays. It looks like you might need a clearer copy to read the rules. That layout didn't favor the colums that sat near the spine of the book so some of the text might have been cut off. DTRPG seems to have a better copy judging from the preview there.
@RPGGamer9 күн бұрын
7th Sea is on my list to put in the polls, so we'll get round to it sooner or later. Sorry if the PDF came out a little unreadable, it's pretty clear on my screen, and I've already recorded the rules breakdown, so hopefully that doesn't spoil it.

Before Yu-Gi-Oh became the most popular TCG in the market. Magic the Gathering was the last hold from the TCG boom of the 90s. MTG was in third place behind Pokémon in most of the 2000s.

Didn't know that, but the talk of CCG's has made me remember how many there were. Makes me wonder if someone does a Retro CCG channel to cover the mass of games which filled store shelves back in the 90's.

A Good video, though L5R 3E is my preferred edition; however, as pronunciation is something of a personal bugbear of mine 😅, I feel compelled to lend a hand (no offence intended): Rokugan = ROH●koo●GAHN Shugenja = SHOE●gen●JAH ("gen" rhymes with "Ken", with the "g" sounded like the one in "guy" or "ghost") (Also: There's an "Oriental Adventures Pronounciation Guide" on the en world website that may be useful for other words used in the game/setting) Stolze = STOL●zee (and that comes straight from his own website) Edit: Sorry to hear about the YT censorship nonsense - it seems that between their AI "filters" and overzealous fundamentalists amongst both YT review/appeal staff and the general viewing public, sheer and utter madness rules the day; hopefully something good will come out of this, somehow...🤞
@RPGGamer9 күн бұрын
Pronunciation is always going to be a problem for me. I suffer from a very slight speech impediment, which I received therapy for when I was a kid. Basically I had to practice saying words over and over to learn how to shape my mouth properly to say them. So mostly it isn't a problem, unless I encounter words I haven't said before, and then my mouth has no idea what to do, and often I don't even realise it because I know what I was trying to say. So in the above, Rokugan and Stolze, I was trying to say as you indicated above, but I'll have to go back as see what I actually said :D The youtube censorship, they do seem to have automated the entire process. I know people who have made appeals and had responses within seconds, and I know in copyright claims, they ALWAYS reject your first appeal, not even looking until you are willing to risk a copyright strike and potentially losing your channel.

Usually when a video wanders into possibly "controversial" territory or topics some content creators out a very long placard at the opening of the video explaining that it falls under Fair Use as critique and follow it up with another placard containing a content warning and links to support groups. Not 100% guaranteed to avoid the censorship but it tends to help on appeals.
@RPGGamer9 күн бұрын
I was willing to live with them putting an age warning on the video, as indeed I did speak on "controversial" subjects, although it does annoy that the videos accusing RPG's of being behind these subjects are not subject to these same warnings, it's only if you try to provide facts that you get smacked down for. Reminds me of the quote, "a lie can travel halfway around the world before the truth puts on its shoes". But banning the video entirely and quoting a rule which I in no way broke, that really gets me.
@allluckyseven11 күн бұрын
About the last part of the video (which is unrelated to this game), YT is rather sensitive about that subject. And because of that, some (most?) people avoid even mentioning that word.
@RPGGamer9 күн бұрын
Yes, and I was willing to live with them age restricting the video. But deleting the video citing a rule which says you're not allowed to show "un-aliving", or methods of "un-aliving" when the video definitely didn't, really sticks a knife in :D

It feels that way, the only thing that makes me doubt it at all is that they're not attacking the videos I made against those that likely have supporters, which I would have thought would have been their focus.) It's pronounced Ro-ku-gan or more phonetically, it's Roku like the tv service and also the Japanese word for the number 6 with gan, with the a being soft, on the end or Roku-gan. Hope that helps.
@RPGGamer9 күн бұрын
The weird thing is, that's what I intended to say, but my slight speech impediment and the fact that it's not a word I'd ever had to practice saying (the way therapy taught me to overcome my impediment) has led to what I did say :D
