During an interview with Tom Snyder in 1997, music legend Carl Perkins tells of meeting Elvis for the first time at Sun Studios and what Presley meant to him and American music in general.

Elvis Aaron Presley (January 8, 1935 - August 16, 1977), also known simply as Elvis, was an American singer and actor. Regarded as one of the most significant cultural icons of the 20th century, he is often referred to as the "King of Rock and Roll" or simply "The King."

Carl Lee Perkins (1932 - 1998) was an American singer, songwriter, and guitarist who recorded at the Sun Studio in Memphis, beginning in 1954. Among his best-known songs are "Blue Suede Shoes," "Honey Don't", "Matchbox," and "Everybody's Trying to Be My Baby."
According to Charlie Daniels, "Carl Perkins' songs personified the rockabilly era, and Carl Perkins' sound personifies the rockabilly sound more so than anybody involved in it because he never changed." Perkins's songs were recorded by artists (and friends) as influential as Elvis Presley, the Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, Johnny Cash, and Eric Clapton, which further established his place in the history of popular music. Paul McCartney said, "if there were no Carl Perkins, there would be no Beatles."

Snyder was also the pioneer anchor of the primetime NBC News Update in the 1970s and early 1980s, a one-minute capsule of news updates primetime.

Carl could write great songs, sing and REALLY play, LEAD guitar. Elvis Presley, OTH, was the eye popping vision and complete package of the multi media pop superstar, whose like has never been seen since and whose power and glory has never been even remotely approached by anyone else. Some call it charisma, and he had it to burn. We are not talking about ''just as good''. As a live performer, Elvis Presley could wipe the floor with any of them then and any of them since. His is the most galvanizing personality I am aware of. He could hold 50,000 paying people breathless, just standing there sweating and sipping Gatorade in between songs.

Elvis mial oszalamiajaca kariere, oszalamiajaca popularnosc, slawe, wokol niego krazyly tzw. lowcy talentow, oszusci, narzucajace sie kobiety, nie malolaty, ale kobiety, z wyzszych sfer, aktorki, poniewaz Elvis mial rowniez oszalamiajaca urode, by lesencja meskosci, i dlatego ze byl niezwykle inteligentny, i mial wysoka kulture osobista ,i silna osobowosc nie wplatal sie w afere, ktora by go pograzyla, i za to miedzy innymi mial wielu, za wielu wrogow!

When Carl Perkins was in the hospital, watching Elvis singing his song, wouldn't have Elvis had to pay Carl a big wad, since Carl was the songwriter, or did Elvis record the song and Carl didn't get anything, if so then that wouldn't have been right, Carl's version of blue suede shoes is much better than Elvises, to me anyway, even though I am also a big elvis fan

Elvis's Blue Swede Shoes " Sold More " than Carl's . Carl got payments on Elvis singing his written songs - Paid by ASCAP recording - Not by Elvis . Carl did well $$$$ with Elvis singing his song

Carl's original version of BSS is better than Elvis' '56 studio version. Elvis himself said it couldn't be improved upon. Of course, Carl got paid EVERY time the song was sung (professionally) or sold. But during the '68 Comeback, IMO, Elvis' (Black Leather, Sit Down) version is the ultimate realization of the song. Elvis was a MUCH greater vocalist and his voice was at its peak and he was hungry to re establish himself. But that is just a well informed opinion! Perkins' original BSS is one of the greatest Rockabilly anthems of them all.

Carl has said many times that Elvis was pressured to release his version when Carl's was going strong. Elvis said he would not do that. Elvis did not want to take away anything from his friends sales. They waited until Carl's version was off the top of the charts. Elvis did sell more copies after Carl was able to sell as many as he could first. Carl received lots of royalties from Elvis. Carl said it was truly one of the nicest things any did for him. He was a true friend.
