Everyone who plays sorta knows that there's a major problem with the new player experience. But no one can really point to what's actually wrong, and I think that's because we've lost that new-player mindset. Criticisms like yours really shine a light on WHAT is wrong rather than just crying wolf. A fun fact: a few years ago (2-3 years from memory), the new player experience was DRASTICALLY worse. A lot of players get locked into the mindset of how things were when they started. Deimos didn't exist, Duviri didn't exist, Railjack didn't exist, and a lot of these old school players will bend over backwards to scare new players away from these things because of their own personal biases, which I think is harmful to the experience. I've seen people say "Duviri is too complex for new players" and it frustrates me, as it's set up as a really cool tutorial area that lets you farm up some genuinely useful stuff. Sure, it's not furthering you towards the end of the star chart, but pushing to do that ASAP isn't fun or necessary.

A little anecdote from the Warframe past. When they added kubrow to the game. These dogs have different fur pattern. Some rarer than others. Fur was decided upon hatching the dog. Not lucky? Try new dog. Obviously, in a free2play game - there was a button to reroll fur, for platinum. You know what Devs did, when they saw how much players were rerolling fur? You guessed it... THEY REMOVED THAT BUTTON. You probably can find a clip of Sheldon from some DevStream, where he said - "Omg, we made a casino! We have to remove that!"

@Hehelar7 ай бұрын
@@drewrobinson5562In the closed beta and very early in open beta - half of warframe "skill tree" and half of weapons mod slots were locked behind reactor/catalist, which you could only buy for real money. That was the REAL pay2win. They changed that, as far as I can remember, half a year into open beta. Mod packs you are talking about were also changed around 3 years ago (I do not remember when, but fairly long time ago). Now you can buy a mod pack, which contain specified, good for beginners, "essential" themed mods. There is a "mod pack", with transmute cores that are random, and are used in transmutation in 4-to-1 process with random result. But it's more akin to resource, than actual mods for warframe or weapons. You can not name that "gambling". Especially for whales, who can buy really powerful stuff from other players and skip time in market purchases. There's a lot of noob traps in the shop, don't get me wrong, I know that. I completely agree on the new player crafting experience stuff. I VERY clearly remember how I struggled with gulping down the fact that i needed to wait almost 4 whole DAYS to even get my frame that i worked so hard for. No one told me that i can craft these and have them on a conveyor belt being procured and steadily reaching my needy new player hands. Now, having a grasp on how it works, i always look for new things to craft, and always make sure there is something cooking in the foundry. I firmly believe that teaching how the foundry works and how you have no limit on the things you can craft, plus how many things you can easily get the parts for and outright buy- would go a LONG way with helping raise the hopes of new players and even preventing so many quitting so early.

I was forewarned, because I discovered Warframe through a Lets player. The wait adds a little bit of excitement and satisfaction through anticipation. And you need that patience once you inevitably hit the ceiling of the content. DE does not do fast updates. They tried, but it came out rushed and unpolished. Also: Warframe can be addicting. Forcing people to take breaks is simply good. Tbh I wonder where he gets the impression that this is what makes people quit. This 1000%. I've been playing Warframe, hmm, around 7 or so years (give or take), I've played so many other live services and looter games and, quite frankly...not enough of them, if any really, focus enough on rewarding powerful storytelling and revealing mystery as the main lure of the game. Loot is obviously fun, of course, but working hard to upgrade gear to reach an important story climax SHOULD be the motivation. Instead, most of them just throw more loot at people and expect that to be a lasting high. It's absolutely not. It's incredibly fleeting and temporary. The places Warframe's story and gameplay are heading are far more compelling than just "ooh shiny weapon" to me. And every time I see people gush over their favorite looter doing gear tweaks or showing screenshots of new loot, I just think... Yeah, the industry is still missing the point, aren't they?

As an older player that has guided several players through starting the game, and is still trying to pay forward the help that I got when I started playing 10 years ago It's really good to see the honest and clear critique that you have been giving at different stages of the game. There are somethings that older players can't get a clear idea about the feel for, like pacing, and where those problems specifically are, even if we know they exist. On a separate but related note, it is really interesting seeing your reactions to playing the quests in the order that you have been playing them, since they aren't the order that they were released in. It gives me a different perspective as an older player as to how the world is unveiled. For perspective, when I started playing there weren't any of the quests you've played through, in fact the one that you are about to do was the first one to be added into the game, before even the new player quest, but even back then we had things that pointed to the fact that there was more lurking around the corner for us to discover. Here is a fun piece of information: every piece of alien text and script in the game is readable, and somethings that you might have thought were art, especially in the void, are actually writing.

The story doesn’t even need to be complicated, I personally just want to have a reason to hate the boss by the time I reach them instead of finding out why they are a threat then and there. Welcome to our personal purgatory btw enjoy your stay. And don’t force yourself to play the game if you don’t want to, the game wants you to keep playing but it doesn’t want you to get burnt out which to me are why things like the time on crafting so we can chill even though we don’t realize we need to chill.

But as someone with just over 1000 hours (400 hrs on xbox THEN started over from scratch and am at another 600+ hours in) I adopted one rule that I hold too religiously: I will never let someone play this game for the first time alone. Even if it's just to keep them from some of the new player traps, I always walk with my friends through the introductory hours and I have turned out some dedicated Warframe players with this approach! Love the videos and glad to see more and more people coming into this incredible, deep and very thoughtfully made and loved game!

@SlDEWlNDER4 ай бұрын
@@ARatherDapperTapir Lol there's definitely nothing wrong with playing solo for the most part but there is alot of things in this game that are made WAY easier with open matchmaking, ESP clearing the starchart! Don't worry, the important stuff like story heavy quests are singleplayer locked anyway so you don't have to worry about veteran players ruining that stuff for you! I will say this too, the community is such a healthy and supportive place which I know is a weird concept for alot of gamers. Do yourself a favor and join a big clan with max research and you'll instantly be around players who can answer questions and potentially help you run through harder pieces of content! Good luck out there, Tenno!

You've almost finished the tutorial, so - Congrats on getting this far :) Something interesting you pointed out with the Necramech - How you entered this mode where you felt godly. With enough mods and weapon choices and so on, you can feel like that all the time. The damage of any weapon can scale to absurd proportions, weapons can explode to ludicrous degrees, and frames can be tanky to the point of insanity. When your weapon and frame synergize well, it's a great experience :)

I always love hearing a new players perspective and in your last video you definitely articulated some very interesting points. All valid, as far as I'm concerned. Your experience right now reminds me when I first started the game and you are in this wonderful phase of discovery. Obviously it tapers off the longer you play the game, that's to be expected, but you might be surprised how much discovery this game really can deliver. IMO, it's quite a bit. Glad to see you're enjoying the game and hope you continue to stick with it. Just be sure to enjoy it at YOUR own pace and play the game the way YOU have fun. WF has a weird but awesome story or lore. It's a bit of bumpy ride, bits and pieces sort of scattered all over the place, but once it starts to come together for you, it's definitely very intriguing. For me, it's certainly one of the contributing reasons why I have over 4000 hrs in the game. Good luck, have fun and fight on!

9:12 That's why the main progression in the game for the new players are doing the mission nodes on the planets and progress within it. The junction quest tu unlock a new planet serve as a tutorial and to tell the player what he hass to do and what functions the game has. Those junction quests tell you what to do, the junctions unlock new quests, the junctions tell you to do certain quest to unlock more places and things to do, etc
@khaozcat7 ай бұрын
The problem with early game quests, they are very old, and mostly just missions with characters sometimes talking over them, way less cinematic setpieces like the newer quests (deadlock protocol, vox solaris, heart of deimos), also, theres a big chunk of the story missing at the beginning since it was played through limited time events way back in the day, for example Alad V appears in the story out of nowhere, you don't know who that guy is and the first and last time interacting with him before the quests he's featured in is on jupiter. Hope is at some point DE might go back and add more quests towards the beginning of the game, but right now they are focused on pushing the story forward. Also i quite like the fact that the tutorial quests don't really tell you much in the way of lore, so you're only hit with the realization of what's actually going on in the natah quest, and the story actually picks up from there with a much stronger sense of direction. From that point each quest basically flows into the next, so the later part of the game is much more well-paced than the beginning.

I have a tiny advice for you from the footage you've shown: Increase the FOV, decrease the screen shake and turn off HUD motion. (The Options Menu has a search function.) I just wanna say you did an increadible summary on the Natah quest, most people have no idea about anything till they crash into the Second dream, because they JUST DO NOT listen to anything or read anything that is said in the game. I think that is a huge miss on any new player, playing any game. Seeing youtubers talk over and ignoring mission directives on what to do, and then they go "the fck i´m supposed to do?" Increadibly triggering for the vet´s knowing, the Writers who wrote it, and the Actors. I think there is a definite Players fault when designing a game. Anyways, Great video with solid criticism!

I found Warframe back in 2017 (just before Chains of Harrow released), and The Limbo Theorem and The New Strange were both quests that I ran into pretty quickly. The star chart was the only progression at the time, and there were no open worlds to serve as a distraction, so I was guaranteed to run into them early-ish, which was probably a good thing.

I think the tonal change here is probably directly attributable to how much the new player experience still needs polish. They've done a lot of passes on it over the years, some of them were HUGE milestones, but 11 years of layered systems that have been explained on devstreams to the hardcore fanbase and then never really explained ingame leaves a LOT of technical debt to catch up on. They should probably have someone just working on it full time at this point. I was so excited to see your reaction to archwing. The aforementioned hardcore fanbase is off archwings and off railjack, and they are two of my favorite game modes I would LOVE to see get more investment, but the community is so against them or ignoring them that it would be hard to justify DE dumping more resources into them. Hopefully this wave of influencers onboarding with fresh eyes will be enough to creep the community opinion back from full-on hate for them. Looking forward to the second dream video. There's more huge cinematic quests after it, but it's where the story really picks up on cashing in on those breadcrumbs (~100 hours in).

The biggest key factor about the monetization in this game is how you can trade things with other players for premium currency. After nearly 10 years of playing Warframe, I've made an equivalent to multiple hundreds of dollars in platinum entirely just from trades. What did I trade? Prime parts. Mods. Blueprints. Arcanes. Etc. Things that have been piling up in my inventory, just from playing the game regularly. Stuff that is garbage to me, but a treasure to another player. You're 100% correct, I definitely remember my new player experience, while platinum didn't seem as pay to win for me, as I was happy to wait in between school days (I started many years ago), I had my brother to guide me through the game, and if I didn't have him to really sell me on the many aspects of the game that you only come to understand later on, I probably would've played it off and on for a good while until I came to that realisation myself. Modding, to this day I think is the really big thing that needs to be worked on. A new player sees literally hundreds, maybe even low thousands of mods, and it's hard to piece together how they work together at all or which ones are useful and which ones are not, and a better explanation that didn't have me go to external sources would've been greatly appreciated. Now I say this in anticipation, you have come upon the quest that hooked me to Warframe for years, that's what Warframe does, it subverts expectations, and you're in for one hell of a ride. I hope you continue to have fun, and I think your commentary and approach on the new player experience is a discussion that is important for the Warframe community to have.

problem for me is still the very real lack of a clearly defined progressive direction - other than finish all the story content, which is often easier said than done. here's the thing, between pc and ps5 I have over 1k hours into the game and still haven't taken on the new war yet... I have this becasue it's fun to play and I just like building new frames. the game easily accodates players like me who take their time with the story, but it's also super easy to get lost in your own progression along the way. I'll spend several play sessions just trying to track down rare mods or opening relics, doing quick sortie runs, etc... None of that progresses my story or gets me any closer to steel path which is where the really good stuff is - effectively the start of the game with a much more challenging difficulty. But if you want challenge in the early game it's also easy to find. try to optomize your build while actually in high level content, the only barrier to entry being that you either have to have bring a lv 30 frame with you, which is super easy to get just by running a few rounds of onslaught, or you're willing to stick around a level longer then 15-20 minutes. Getting a frame to 30 doesn't mean you're actually ready for high end play, and the game will properly smack you down, even if you're a good mechanical player but are not properly built for the content. I think the game hides this difficulty curve very well and can be quite deceptive with newer players. But when you're chasing a build and the part you need only has the potential to drop on round c or after a certain higher time limit is reached... you'll start to understand how crazy this game gets, and thats honestly where the game really starts to separate itself out from the competition. Because, and this is key, the power creep is real and DE basically let's us evolve and break the game to keep things going. and that thrill of leveling rooms of enemies but only being two hits from constant death is a hard high to beat :)

You're absolutely right on monetization and i still don't understand why DE keeps the in-game market this way. The most generous game developers seemingly hellbent on making themselves appear the greediest. The in game-market is a relic of a bygone era that needs to change.
@sitchreapotere10737 ай бұрын
One of the saddest aspects of the new player experience is that, from my perspective, they DID fix it... and then the community cried so hard they reverted it. When the Duviri Paradox first released, DE reworked the first login of the game to play a special cinematic with the Lotus talking to you, explaining that you can either start the game in a Warframe (and play the Vor's Prize quest) or start the game as the Drifter (and begin the game with the Duviri Paradox). This was a FANTASTIC decision by the developers, because not only does it front-load some of Warframe's best content with Duviri Paradox, it also establishes some important narrative aspects right from the get-go and offers a far superior tutorial for the games movement and shooting mechanics. Unfortunately, the playerbase revolted. The players all cried about how Duviri is not representative of Warframe as a whole, and that it ruined new player's view of the story. I fully believe those voices in the community were wrong, but DE caved. They removed that new intro cinematic, and put the Duviri Paradox unceremoniously hidden inside the codex, available upon completion of Vor's Prize. And it HURTS. Duviri Paradox is such an incredible tool for new players to have access to *every* item in the game outside of its regular reward structure. You can get warframes and weapons immediately that you'd need to wait over a hundred hours to be able to acquire. And the story is not spoiled in the slightest - your very questions in this video prove that, as did many other content creators at the time. I will never not be salty that the community whined their way out of Warframe having a legitimately better new player experience. It genuinely breaks my heart to this day that that new intro cinematic was just thrown away, never to be used again. At least you can still find it on youtube...
@RedShadowOfSaturn7 ай бұрын
So, a couple things that need to be corrected, with the caveat that, ultimately, I agree with you... I replayed a fresh new account to see how this worked, and there wasn't a "cinematic" for this change specifically. The intro cinematic that came with, I believe, the Heart of Deimos update (which brought the new Awakening Warframe intro mission) was still there when Duviri launched. But there wasn't a formal cinematic for Duviri, just Lotus giving a vague choice of which direction to choose. Also, while Duviri does unlock after Vor's Prize, it's not just buried in the codex, you can access it directly from Navigation as the Duviri mask appears under the activity bar, and can be switched to any time a player wants. I'm watching several new players on their journeys on KZbin, and some of them don't want to do Duviri yet, not because they're not interested, just that they're more invested in upgrading Warframes and weapons at the moment and they want to wait until later on when they're ready. I deeply love Duviri and what it adds to Warframe, not just in reward structures but in imagination...and again, I agree with you that it was a great thing to add to the beginning, as a kind of mysterious extended prologue that most other games wouldn't want to risk. But I also don't blame DE for removing that, and players for not wanting to dip into it if they're not ready. They spent time reworking much of the early game to streamline their trip around the star chart and to Second Dream, likely because that's a bigger hook than Duviri is. Duviri is awesome, without a doubt, but it does hit harder when you have more context. If a person has the bandwidth to experiment, or they happen to finish Duviri early, then they have a great diversion if they like...but its definitely not required and I would advise players who want to focus on the basics first to avoid it.

@iimFibs It actually was, people are still having their minds blown by it 8.5 years after its release... Gotta love the "I wasn't impressed by something and therefore it must not be impressive" folks. Don'tcha just hate them? 😉

@iimFibs You...were literally just person. 🤣 Glad you didn't care about it. Lotta other people did. Glad you didn't think it was good. I've played plenty of games people loved and didn't find them the best thing ever. Doesn't make me not respect those games for how good they are. Happy for you that you didn't like this ONE mission. It's one milestone in a game full of mind blowing milestones. But hey...you didn't like it and wanted to call people a cult. Dime a dozen opinion on the internet. Good work. 🫡

i think the issue with Duviri being a new starting place is the fact that, it's Duviri. if they tear off the circuit away from it and have that new player experience be something more mysterious. People wouldn't get an issue. I've seen what new players thoughts are when leaving duviri, hell one of them is my best friend. The total shift in gameplay and how the normal mission operates would turn people off. The realization what they were playing was not advancing anything, and was so far away from the star chart where everything is actually gotten. It messes with them, since they would be so used to Duviri. My Friends list is a graveyard of new players, and i regret not telling them to focus more on the solar system than duviri. The only one that stayed is my best friend that i had to force him back into it. I believe what the community said was true because ive seen it happen first hand. It's a good alternate source of stuff but only after you have gotten a grasp like Legendary drops has, and it honestly makes a lot of what happen in new war less impactful once you know what happened to characters.

@steveverera9999 Kinda why I agree that it was better as an option. I liked the idea of it being the new prologue, but if it's turning people off too soon, making it optional was the way to. They were smart to do it that way.

It's crazy you feel this way, and I actually can't wait for your next episode when you do the Second Dream, and the War Within. I'm almost certain that those 2 quests singlehandedly stole a spot in 99% of the warframe playerbase's hearts as one of their favorite games of all time. Like, it's one of those "I wish I could lose my memories to experience it all for the first time again" things.

Came back after about 5+ years away. (800hrs). I love the changes they've made and I've fallen in love with this game again. But my sense of value in regards to trading is upside-down now lol.
