Root is a game of adventure and war in which 2 to 4 (1 to 6 with the 'Riverfolk' expansion) players battle for control of a vast wilderness.
The nefarious Marquise de Cat has seized the great woodland, intent on harvesting its riches. Under her rule, the many creatures of the forest have banded together. This Alliance will seek to strengthen its resources and subvert the rule of Cats. In this effort, the Alliance may enlist the help of the wandering Vagabonds who are able to move through the more dangerous woodland paths. Though some may sympathize with the Alliance’s hopes and dreams, these wanderers are old enough to remember the great birds of prey who once controlled the woods.
Meanwhile, at the edge of the region, the proud, squabbling Eyrie have found a new commander who they hope will lead their faction to resume their ancient birthright. The stage is set for a contest that will decide the fate of the great woodland. It is up to the players to decide which group will ultimately take root.
Root represents the next step in our development of asymmetric design. Like Vast: The Crystal Caverns, each player in Root has unique capabilities and a different victory condition. Now, with the aid of gorgeous, multi-use cards, a truly asymmetric design has never been more accessible.
The Cats play a game of engine building and logistics while attempting to police the vast wilderness. By collecting Wood they are able to produce workshops, lumber mills, and barracks. They win by building new buildings and crafts.
The Eyrie musters their hawks to take back the Woods. They must capture as much territory as possible and build roosts before they collapse back into squabbling.
The Alliance hides in the shadows, recruiting forces and hatching conspiracies. They begin slowly and build towards a dramatic late-game presence--but only if they can manage to keep the other players in check.
Meanwhile, the Vagabond plays all sides of the conflict for their own gain, while hiding a mysterious quest. Explore the board, fight other factions, and work towards achieving your hidden goal.

One possible mistake I noticed was using your Command Warren for your Battle Decree instead of crafting it with your two rabbit clearings. You would have to use that rabbit ambush or another card somewhere else in the decree but the command warren would let you attack once more per daylight but you wouldnt be beholden to it.

I'm usually not a big fan of Charismatic (due to early card limitations), tend to focus on quick start with Despot to have at least 3 Roosts early (for an extra card draws) and putting extras into move. I aim to keep my decree slim early and focus on non-bird cards and save them for later, then go into turmoil for a low cost to seem less of a threat but can ramp up easily,, and pick my 2nd leader depending on the situation

Surprisingly, I tend to find WA easy to counter - with large numbers of Birds per clearing the extra cost of Martial Law tends to keep them away...

I’m a new player and I tend to have a lot of trouble with the Eyrie, specifically maintaining the decree. Thanks for this guide, hopefully it helps me get better.

Also, I think the Charismatic can only use 1 card for recruit (otherwise he'll go into turmoil quickly) but early Despot can be more flexible with Recruit - this allows you to counter WA more easily (recruit doesn't give away the card)

I win while having 4 recruit with a charismatic leader. All you need is enough actions.

In my games Birds are always considered a threat: considering their VP income per turn, they just keep popping up as a priority to kill...

They certainly should be considered a threat. They can really explode quickly at the end of the game. Out of curiosity, do you play vagabond much? If so, which leader do you like best?

@@LegendaryTactics That's the one I have least experience with. I really prefer a Beaver as with starting hammer and a bag I don't need to rely on others that much for crafting, and early crafting of some items (coins and pots) can give you 2/3 VPs for a mere 1 hammer. I don't have much experience with Thief and Guardian, but both seem to be more confrontational - you need to decide early who your enemies are and earn your VPs through kills (Guardian) and helping others with extra cards you steal (Thief). I will need to play more with both 😁 We actually dedicated Thursday evenings to playing Root on the app - it's amazing how quick it goes, 4 player game can be easy finished in 1 hour, so we play 2 games per evening, random factions.

I like the idea of starting with the charismatic. However, it does depend on your starting hand as you need a decree in move with your starting suit or you will have an early turmoil

Thanks for the video! One thing I wanted to point out after watching a few of this - the cat faction is pronounced “mark-ee” (c’est francais)

Thanks for checking it out. As I understand it, it is the feminine form with the "e" on the end of Marquise (Mar QEEZ) is the correct pronunciation. MarQEE would be written without the "e" Marquis.

At the end you use brutal tactics for 4 hits, when the cats only had 3 things to hit 😅. Nice gameplay, but think still have learning to do.

Sometimes I just like to rub my dominance in the AI's face. But for sure, there's a ton to learn for this game, and I'm not sure I'll ever get it all. I haven't even touched the factions that aren't in the digital game yet. Thanks for checking the video out.

I heard somewhere that the eirye can't go into turmoil if they play a dominance card but can't find where, do you know if that's truth?

I haven't seen anything to that effect in the rulebook. Under the turmoil section it says "if you cannot fully take an action in the Decree for ANY reason, you fall into turmoil". This seems as if it would apply to Dominance victories as well since it doesn't state otherwise.

@@Reggie1408 That was still the lower role of the two. Since the higher role goes to the WA, and your number can only go as high as the troops in battle, it shows that the WA has 0 power even though they rolled higher.

This tutorial is honestly awful and filled with bad advice. Only 1 recruit card with a charismatic leader? Not using your yellow cards for the decree when you're about to attack the woodland alliance on a yellow field?
