a tip for every shogun 2 player. Since legend has also problems of knowing if a general has survivied or not especially if the generals are not leading the army: All general units have a little influnce circle around them if you watch the minimap. if the general is dead this circle disappears. Obviously legend wont make much use of it, since most of the time he plays on legendray difficulty. but for other players i hope this will help.

Finding out back in the day that the Realm Divide event can trigger on AI factions was what led to my love of playing total war games super slow. I love a good sweeping tide from time to time, but my favorite thing is playing the diplomacy game. My favorite run of Shogun2 was as the Date supporting the Takeda through the entire takeover of Japan, sticking by them while the shogunate turned everyone else against us....and then destroying them in a single turn with a ton of pre-planned ambushes and armies. Took about 75% of their territory at once and they buckled under the weight of their Shimazu war before they could do anything to stop it.

My first major Shogun 2 campaign I saw a horrifying AI shogun. I was the Date and I saw an Ikko Ikki Shogunate very early. They conquered the whole south and could convert provinces insanely fast with around 6 fully levelled monks and converted metsuke. They basically conquered most of the map through mass peasant revolts, it was a campaign where the objective was effectively “Survive”.

@@VioletMilks Kind of both actually, it took years and fighting dozens if not over a hundred armies at my fortified border and countless hordes of what felt like fully stacked uprisings. It was basically like playing western Rome in Shogun 2. I ended up blitzing towards Kyoto with my Diamyo and his son. As endless hordes would popup behind in newly conquered territories like Skaven with no hope of stopping them even with excepted taxes. I took the shogunate but I finally gave up when i realized i could only convert about 1-3% a turn while the Ikko were able to do about 24% a turn to convert any regions rebel doom stacks could take. In an RP sense the Date maybe shogun but the Ikko religion would've definitely become the state religion. Funnily enough as an aside I ended up treating the 3 Buddhists rebel occupied territories I found as unofficial allies as they couldn't have Ikko uprisings despite the religions presence and were basically a safety buffer near Kyoto.

@@Ryuko-T72 Unfortunately this specific game was one I played probably over a decade and many many computers ago. It did convince me to buy the Ikko Ikki dlc, I’d love to have that save file back just for the insanity of it. Hell if I was good at modding I’d even try to recreate it as that pseudo endsig scenario for the game. Even after the rage of that campaign it has left a soft spot for those crazy peasants in my heart, I love to see wherever they’re included.

@@RKNGL GOd damn, respect, you ended up blitzing all the way from the north where Date starts straight down into Kyoto? Insane powerplay, and honestly the only chance you had at surviving the Campaign. I think Legendary offers the best amount of battles but I just cannot for the life of me win anything there with how many stacks the damn AI spawns. I've been trying to work my way up to Very Hard which is practically the same as Legendary but I always get stuck late game when realm divide happens on hard

Hey this is my campaign, excellent battle! Never even considered sallying out to hit the general like that but worked like a charm! Thanks my man. This campaign was quite difficult at the start. If anyone wants to play Uesugi, I basically sent out a small expedition force to take the gold island from the Honma. From there I had to turtle in my starting settlement, using sieges and forest ambushes to take out incoming armies. Eventually I was fairly rich and the enemy clans were depleted and it was pretty easy from there!

One note I'll give you is that it is not cost effective to have more than 4 warrior monks in each army in my experience, as it gives plenty of warcry. If you split your armies in half and fill with ashigaru you'll be still nearly as strong. Obviously that dread talent is very good. Accuracy isn't needed on bow monks but there might be nothing you prefer.- extra starting xp from the temples is slightly better though as they have higher attack speed, and armour for archer vs archer. You can use the shrine resource for extra morale too for your yari ashigaru for armies without monk agents or just to have a new recruit location as your bow monks will deal with wall archers. It might be even more useful if you do not have the spear tree tech to improve their spawn level. Well played so far, Uesugi can be rough, but the monks are fantastic and fun units. Did you put a famous temple on honma's island? (Sado is it?)

The reason for those buffs and not temple on the monks is that there was a fletcher amd blacksmith in 2 adjacent chokehold provinces next to Oda territory, so I figured itd be the best spot. I definitely overdo it on the monks for sure I just think they are so cool so I got too deep on them lol.

@@SofaMuncher it is a fine place to build them, however you're uniquely placed to make the best use of the religious sites, and monks don't reduce to one turn to make like samurai. The trick with the accuracy places is to build siege there, and a fire bomb thrower + warcry is devastating indeed. High morale ashigaru helps too as the fodder. Afaik its the best non christian counter to massed naginata. Its the ninja clan (hattori/tokugawa) method too as their ninja get lots of ammo iirc. Hattori and uesugi are also best set to win a morale war too, and using bow monks protects your bombers. Try it out, one bomb thrower in an army will change your life

You can see if you've killed the enemy general on the minimap, if there isn't a routing unit marked as a star in the circle means he's dead, but you had a circled star running which means you haven't killed him

I usually use yari ashigaru lines on lower levels in long straight lines so enemies will derp on them, or just holding some corner where archers can easily decimate guys from upper levels, this castle is awesome for that. Hold a position with militia or ashigaru and then burn the tower before enemy catches it, if they come with way larger force there.

It surely nice to see all these different games. Although it also highlights how vast and diverse TW Warhammer is. I usually don't play more than one campaign of historical TW games I own per year. With WH, I can just change the faction and its a whole new deal. But it is less polished than historical games are. There is something about ME2 cav, S2 monks and Fots cannons that makes each of them them more satisfying than their WH counterparts. Oh, and manually aiming a naval combat broadside, lets not forget about that.

I assume you have the unique faction DLCs that add faction specific campaign mechanics? Because i find a lot of the base factions very samey and rely more on the magic system for variety but even that gets samey pretty quick. Its fun wiping out a unit with a spell the first few times but it gets boring fast imo plus the RnG around spells in general. I personally feel there is very little "tactics" with WH TW and it's more about abusing certain mechanics, building gimmick armies or leveling up heroes. I just don't think fantasy works well in a strategic game, at least not the way TW did it anyway.

@@xXBisquitsXx I do. However, I meant all factions. Basic or DLC, doesn't matter. Owning DLCs helps, since they often unlock a significant part of the roster. And faction-specific mechanics help diversify the game. But race-specific mechanics is no less important. Influence, Raise the Dead , skaven stalking stance, Waaagh, "labor management, hordes, warbands, worldroots - all that leaves a considerable impact on my campaigns. And, well, its your choice whether you want to abuse mechanics. Sometimes I do, sometimes I don't. When I do, sometimes its in WH, sometimes its in historical game. Same with gimmick armies. You can do it, but you don't have to. Though I agree with you about heroes. Warhammer gives you a lot more variety(EXCEPT NAVAL F CKING COMBAT), be it in magic or unit types - and that is what I'm talking about. You don't have to resort to meticulously picking and positioning your units most of the time. But you absolutely can, and to devastating effect. I was able to win some otherwise hopeless battles using advanced tactics(to be fair, it was with mostly gunpowder armies). And sometimes, there is too much variety. Historical games give you fewer tools to play with, so you have to be better at using them. They also give fewer tools to AI, which means that simpler and easier-to-implement AI can use its tools more efficiently(at least in better TW games) - which is more engaging. TLDR; I mostly disagree, but I admit that WH is much easier to abuse.

Lmao most of warhammer is exactly the same. After early game you end up with either ranged units focus, magic focus, or monster focus, or more of those combined. Neither of them is fun after playing for some time. In Shogun 2, where all factions have the same roster, every unit is totally different, and you can base your playstyle around most of them. Try going infantry + cav heavy with high elves (loreful way) in warhammer and see how far will you get.

Ive seen the a.i take the shogunate once only (in legendary) Date campaign. More steamrolled, they took the shogunate. It was weird. The oda also went from being the big blob, to getting its butt handed (likely as ashigaru dont stack up as well in autoresolve, and the a.i weirdly loves navies in legendary = mori bonus) I just got around to an oda legendary and must say i loved it. To deal with early game borders i actually vassaled the first clan you start off with at war (to the north of you), which let me focus on the tokugawa, Inegawa and the kitabake. Allied to takeda, and picked up the pieces when the ikko destroyed them. Constant warfare with the hattori back and forth. Wrecked the hojo (after takeda got taken out) Built up Sagami into my troop production centre. Just went balls to the wall on gold tier oda long spear. Omg. Combined with stand and fight lvl 3, encampment +2 weapons, and any extra buffs, those oda long spear decimate enemies, especially in spear wall absorbing a charge.. Naginata charging them, they lose 60 of their 150 or so in the first 3-4 seconds. And oda nobunaga is overpowered in legendary. "Impolite" doesnt mean squat in legendary. He gets heroic trait, plus the trait that hurts enemy moral. The oda are overpowered. Only downside is no matchlock ashigaru to do some historical roleplay. Also farm gameplay for oda is OP. Considering many clans will pay you to trade with them (even on legendary) you can afford terrace farms fairly easily mid game. Rush out land consolidation, and bank up momey for those, you get at least 18 surplus food. 18 extra growth to each settlement per turn. All before realm divide. Then your access to metsuke courts or libraries (tech accelerators) plus monk buff sites, and nearby ninja schools. Only campaign i have had more fun on is Ottomo getting the european ships and the destruction with matchlock's and tercos. I'll likely never touch a mori or uesugi legendary.

This game and the FotS expansion were amazing. The only TW game where putting units on walls is actually beneficial to defender and they can ACTUALLY SHOOT. Sadly this arcane technology was lost in later TW games. The only thing I'm disappointed with in this game are naval battles. But that's just subjective, never heard anyone else complain.. Otherwise this is easily one of the best TW games for me. If only we got a TW game with Attila melee combat, Shogun 2 range combat and no dumb gimmicks. Like assigning generals political post like in Attila and keeping them happy. I recently installed Attila back and played a bit and immediately got the flashbacks of managing the politics. Like, are you my top general or some teen girl from a dating sim?

I have an issue with my campaign - recently started S2 campaign (after couple of years) as Hattori (VH difficulty) and I went west - but somehow I got so much area that I am now at the situation, that I am about to trigger realm divide with one more province while having my armies everywhere, but not being prepared and in position. I hoped to consolidate before triggering it, but I am quite literally "forced" to trigger it anyway as on Kyushu they keep attacking me. My 2 main (mosr experienced) armies and generals are at Kyushu, where I will need 3-4 turns to get the rest of the territories, but at the same time, it will be insanely long way back to central Japan, where I expect main fighting. Another elite stack and half was recruited in Ikko-Ikki area and one stack is in Mori territory (I expected Chosokabe to join the war). Chosokabe is controlling their island and some teritories in Mori area and I was told they are about to attack/betray me. Hatakeyama kept their area next to Kyoto, so I will need to deal with them as well, although they are small (just 4 provinces?). In the east there is strong Oda (my ally) dominating most of the east and quite strong Takeda, who will be probably the main opponents - and I am neighbouring both. There is as well Date, who has 3-4 provinces in the corner, so I am not worried ATM. So now I am kinda all over place and I am kinda thinking whether to just fight everybody OR to concede central Japan, consolidate completely in the west (take down Chosokabe and have defensive line at harima-tajima area while doing so. The positive is, that I would have just one front eventually going east. The negative is, that my main recruitment centre is Echizen-Kaga and I would need to concede that area together with the central japan and need to reconquer it. Thoughts?

When in siege defense, make sure to yari wall behind your archers where possible. This way when the enemy is climbing the walls, you pull your archers behind the wall and kite tired troops into a spear wall. Works all the time for me to break even samurai units quickly.

The settlement Fort maps in TW Shogun 2 are great. Compact and layered in a way that makes sense. CA needs to go back to games like this for inspiration on settlement design for newer games. WH3 settlement designs make so little sense.

Trade ships actually can win against kobayas by using boarding very aggressively, but you need to do it either in the rain or get lucky with none of the ships catching fire. And there's also a point of boarding in this game being incredibly bugged, so yeah lots of luck

With bow warrior monks this province can survive against triple stack assaults. First, burn ALL of your towers so that they cant be captured. Then, Layer your spear ashigaru flush against the base of one of the 2nd or 3rd walls then put your ranged units on top that same wall. The enemy will piece meal run at your melee troops while your ranged troops fire at them from an elevated position inflicting consistent and sustained causalities. If you have gun powder and use this strategy you can win almost any siege battle. Gun units that can fire constantly and with impunity are devastating.

I just played a Shogun 2 campaign and the end battle feature is definitely mopping up the routing army so no need to run them down or have cavalry really, just a few strong melee units to wrap up the flanks. Not sure how the algorithm works there, but probably similar to the ROTS.

The only two things are that I don't quite get how the finance system works and I'm not a fan of how weak the general's bodyguards are. I much prefer the Medieval 2 way of having them be elite heavy units, but I know that that might be a bit more difficult in Shogun 2

The game does let you know that the general has died, assuming he has actually been killed. If the generals body gaurd has only been shattered and run away, there's a chance that he survived and has only ran away and didn't get killed. Thus not giving you the notification that he was actually killed.

one way to cheese lost naval battles is to sit right next to the border so when you start to rout you instantly retreat not giving time for your ships to sink or surrender. Personally kinda hate the naval system in Shogun 2 since the ai are slippery bastards and will do this trick to you plus most of the time you can't catch them the second time and even if you do they can do the same thing again and again til you sink or capture every ship without it sailing out of the battle zone. Really annoying trying to chase down stacks of fleets that keep raiding/blockading your trade routes or transporting armies especially since they won't declare war til the troops have been landed if they are not already at war. All whilst Auto-resolve sucks for naval battles often letting them escape and taking more damage than necessary leading to high repair costs and a lot of downtime or you manually fight every naval battle which gets really boring fast and takes ages. IMO this biggest problem with Shogun 2 and the lackluster unit variety but thats because of the limited scope of Japan.

Defensive siege battles would be so much harder in Shogun 2 if the AI weren't so fond of climbing walls when there's a perfectly good gate right next to them. Wonder how many died falling while climbing the walls in that battle.

You missed the general by my feeling on the morale. Also firing down from a wall into melee is more effective where possible, especially the free yari ashigaru garrison units. Guns great for that too. Warcry works on up to 4 units iirc.

You can win a naval battle with trade ships. If you encounter the Black Ship and it is heavily damaged, you can capture it in auto-resolve using a full fleet of trade ships because auto-resolve is broken. Much easier than trying to actually fight it and hilarious if you succeed.

What happened when you thought they were recovering fatigue was actually a game glitch. It happens when to many orders are given by you and the AI. Temporarily all units will stop listening to certain orders, like your archers not being on the wall. This glitch can be abused but it is difficult. If you had archers on the wall they would be able to get many kills. Issue is they won't go to the wall because of glitch. The best way to abuse it is having very melee capable range units on the walls to hold them.

Think Portuguese terco, or gun samurai with melee attack upgrades. If they hold long enough eventually the glitch will happen and they'll kill hundreds. Very good archer units can also be effective, but they'll eventually run out of ammo and get less kills.

I'm surprised this is the first Uesugi disaster battle, considering how hard the campaign is. But mass Warrior Monks is very beneficial to any clan that isn't the Otomo. And this fortress defense is on a hill, Legend already won.

Lol I just had this battle in a similar situation (ai had 2 1/2 stacks) but because my armies had so many matchlock samurai as to make my land battles terrible (6-8) my castle defense was amazing and the ai got slaughtered.

am pretty sure i saw the general, he was shattered and your horses where nearby but i think you didnt notice him in the heat of the moment, and ran away, which to be fair he looked like a katana samurai horsemen but am sure he was that white horse around 8:00-8:06 and that horsemen didnt have a banner on him.

That naval battle would have been an easy win. A trade ship easily wins in boarding against a bow kobaya and enemy ships were much more damaged than the trade ships were.
