Amusingly, the reason the Uesugi campaign is so hard is because, historically, the diamyo of the uesugi, Uesigi Kenshin, was a strategic genius, literally being called the embodiment of the war god Bishamonten. He was the only reason the Uesugi were feared, thus with the player substituting for him they too must be badass to win the campaign.

Mate, after watching half of your videos about Shogun 2, I'm super impressed with how fluently you pronounce those units, locations and names. The Japanese share most of its written characters with Chinese but different pronunciation, which means we as Chinese understand the meaning of those words. For example, Toyota and Honda means nothing in English, but they mean "futile farmland" and "my farmland". This makes it easy for Chinese to understand and memorise Japanese names. But still, you speak it way faster in English than me in Chinese without getting tongue tied.

Then invade date from Sado and work your way down to capture your home province while steamrolling all towards Kyoto.

I'll be honest Donkey while I start a lot of your series I've only finished maybe three or four of your walkthrough's from Shogun 2, and that was years ago when I first got curious with the game. I think I've only watched the Ikko Ikki, Takeda, and Chosokabe start to end. Maybe Shimazu and Tokugawa, at least got close to finishing watching. Just don't have the free time these days, but this is nice as you're tying it up in a neat package after all these years. I really hope one day you'll try one of those extended map mods with extra seasons per year, even though it'll take a while. And I just realized, S2 is 6 years old now! Crazy!

Groot Dont worry. Uesugi is mid to late game faction. Apart from the early game slog their bonuses are really good. Early game correct expansion is an absolute must. And heroic victories. Kenshin did so in real life. He single handedly put the clan on the map. And beat back Oda Nobunaga's army (Oda was absent himself though) to the extent that Nobunaga celebrated his death- at last Japan is mine! Early game is king for the Uesugi-after that you're set. Donkey is a magnificently capable player. Idk why he of all people would shy away from the chance of mantling Kenshin himself :). The people who can slog through Uesugi are the ones who really really like Kenshin- its just fanboyism- otherwise there's no need to play this campsign. Cheers! hate in this game that you dont start out with your specialty units-at least one of them.
@Naraku-no-Hana-WE5 жыл бұрын
Sorry for the comment on old video but I didn't see anyone mention it so just a quick history comment here. Uesugi Kenshin was not the direct heir to his family (which wasn't the Uesugi family but the Nagao), he had a number of older brothers who fought over clan succession. He in fact grew up in a Buddhist monastery, which is something you do with spare heirs to keep them out of political struggles and (hopefully) ensure that at least one member of your line would survive. However, his eldest brother that won the Nagao clan succession was such an immensely unpopular tyrant that all the prominent retainers to the Nagao came to Kenshin (not his name at that time, but I'll spare you all his name changes) begging him to overthrow his brother. It took quite some convincing, but knowing he had the support of the bulk of the clan's retainers was enough. Shortly after defeating his brother (but before he could even secure the rest of Echigo province) the Uesugi daimyo came fleeing to Echigo seeking aid from Kenshin. The Nagao were a powerful vassal clan of the Uesugi. The Uesugi was one of the largest clans in all of Japan but had been significantly weakened by infighting between the three branch families, and were now on the verge of defeat by the emergent power of the (late) Hojo clan. Kenshin agreed to shelter the Uesugi in Echigo and aid them against the Hojo, in exchange for being named heir to the Uesugi clan. This may sound like a greedy move but the Uesugi had been plagued by succession wars and clan in fighting, to succeed against their powerful rivals they needed a strong unifying presence. Kenshin would lead a very successful campaign against the Hojo that drove them all the way back to Odawara Castle (Suruga province), then in the annual gathering of lords in the Imperial capital he impressed all with his culture and Buddhist learning, cementing his place as one of the great Daimyo of Japan (and inevitably drawing him into the war in Shinano against Takeda).

Personally I think Otomo are the hardest clan to play on legendary. The start is not easy with all the enemies you have, and of course you have to convert all of Japan in the late game as you start conquering lots of provinces quickly. Also I had much more trouble with the Takeda than I did with the Uesugi, mostly because it takes so long for the Takeda to start building up a navy and getting trade nodes.

If you got a statue on the map, it'll add more fame. It's weird though, you don't necessarily get statues from Heroic victories. Sometimes you do, sometimes you don't, but you can also get them from other types of victories, so I'm guessing that's what happened.

Uesugi Kenshin was originally called Nagao Kagetora and the rebel leader Harukage at the beginning is his older brother and somehow his adopted father for some stupid Japanese cultural reason. Historically they didn't fight, Harukage stepped down and let Kagetora become the Nagao leader because he was better. Kagetora later took over the Uesugi when they were weak and then changed his name to fit his new clan.

March distance isn't correctly proportioned in the game, 12 turns a year mod might be a fix for that. Echigo to Fukushima is 200km at the worst and probably around 150km distance. Assuming worst case scenario of 10km per day it should take 2-3 weeks at most which is way less than 9 months the game is giving us. That's snail's pace. Well trained and supplied army could average 25-30km per day. On a forced march 50-60km.

Hey, have you ever made a challenge on shogun 2 legendary where you had to manually fight all siege battles (in which you are the attacker)? Ive been thinking about doing this, since I just finished my 3rd legendary campaign and its getting a bit easy for me once I survive the initial onslaught.

Not really because I don't tend to fight siege battles at all. I always siege out the enemy instead, but I guess that's why you ask the question. I haven't done it but also am not planning on it, I just don't like offensive siege battles, kind of like naval battles.

I found that the best strategy for Uesugi early game is to ally with the Mogami and ask to join war on Honma after building up for a couple of turns. Ashina is valid as an early target, but it's in the middle of a bunch of dudes, so it's risky. Plus it's one of only a handful of clans nearby that are friendly to you. Yamaouchi is your vassal and attacking it is a diplomatic disaster, best to let another clan kill it first. Jinbo leads you to Ikko lands, which are rich but open you up to a host of new enemies, and North Shinano's a bad province surrounded by more potential enemies, particularly the Takeda. Honma though controls the second richest province in the game, are right next to you, and are isolated.

Irked! Why put both generals in one army? The second general gets no experiance that way. Separate them so they both get exp. If your going to disband the yari samurai, why put them in the back of the army as reserve. Rush in there, mix it up, and get your moneys worth before you bisband them. Always let the initial rebel army retreat. Try to limit how much damage you do to them and simply try to get them to route. Once you've let them retreat from the first battle, fight the second battle and use the same rout stategy again. This time when the enemy goes to retreat, send your generals in to get as many free kills as possible. Thier cards will improve and they'll rank up a star for successfully winning two battles.
@MrSmartDonkeyLP5 жыл бұрын
You’re commenting on a several year old Let’s Play, watch my more recent ones and then comment again. Also, as much as I love macro, taking a general out of an army to get slightly more exp is too much even for me, they do get experience from being in the main army too.
