Hi Alyssa, I have an 8 month old French bulldog named Benton. He is the sweetest boy, very loving and plays well with other dogs/puppies, even cats. In the last couple of days I've noticed he has become aggressive towards people (barking and growling at them as they pass our apartment- I thought this was just because he hears the dog next door doing this and he likes to mimic her). Last night, however, we went out to a dog friendly restaurant (somewhere we have taken him on a number of times) and he snapped at a girl and nipped her hand. The girl was understanding but it scared and shocked me. After this happened, he continued to growl at everyone who passed. I ended up picking him up and carrying him out, he was completely calm on the ride home but the damage was done. I'm not sure he understood he did wrong. I am afraid to bring him around strangers. Before this he was very kind to people, let them pet and carry him. I'm not sure what happened. Will this training help with this type of aggression? Do you have any advice? He is still a baby, I want to stop this before it progresses. (note: He does not listen to me but is very attentive to my boyfriend, he doesn't disobey him.)

Caitlin Longoria Hi Caitlin, the first thing that you need to know is that aggression is fueled by stress, fear and/or anxiety. A lot of dogs exhibit a number of stress signals that often go unnoticed. If people do notice those stress signals, they sometimes dismiss them and force interactions that the puppy or dog is not comfortable with (ie. strangers or acquaintances will hover, pet, make direct eye contact, direct body language and in some cases, pick them up when the dog may be subtly asking them to "give them space."). When subtle messages don't work, the dog escalates to a growl, air snap or actual bite. How else can they get their message across? Here's what I recommend: 1. Short term: don't take your Frenchie to high stress scenarios. Restaurants, bars, farmer's markets and home depot will most likely generate high levels of stress and thereby increase the probability of aggression. 2. You and your boyfriend should learn about how to read and respond to canine body language. Lip licking, yawning, avoidance behavior are just a few ways that dogs attempt to communicate discomfort. Very people are able to identify these signals, even fewer know how to respond. 3. How should you respond? Be your dog's voice. If someone attempts to pet, step in and tell the person that he is nervous of meeting new people and that it is better to "give him space." The more that you advocate for him, the less he will feel the need to take matters into his own hands. 4. Look for a trainer that addresses behavioral issues by trying to address the root cause (ie. the stress and anxiety). Corrections (verbal or physical) for warning signs (growling, air snapping etc) can be very dangerous because it teaches a dog not to express their discomfort. Instead, they bottle it up, until they can't take it any longer and that's when people usually say "the dog bit without warning." This is because the dog was trained not to give a warning. A well put together training plan (that uses positive reinforcement) can minimize stress and promote more social behavior when he is around new people. I do offer skype behavior consultations. If you would like to set this up, fill out this assessment form: www.legendsdogtraining.com/assessment-form.html Skype consultations are usually about an hour in length, and I follow up by outlining a customized training plan. From there I can personally guide you through the training process, or help you to screen trainers in your area. - Alyssa Lapinel, CPDT-KA

Hi Rah Jah, this isn't the most comprehensive video, more of a demonstration of how training mats can be used to help in conditioning calm behavior. If you are trying to do the training on your own here are some of the most important factors. 1. The mat work foundation was established over a three week period in a low stress, low distraction environment. 2. The foundation exercises condition calm behavior, builds a stronger connection between dog and person and becomes a reference point when training with real world triggers. 3. When training with real world triggers (ie. dogs) the goal is to set your dog up for success. If your dog isn't able to focus or offer well established behaviors - you need to modify the conditions in which you're training. Set your dog up for success. Being slow and methodically will actually accelerate progress in the long run. If you want more guidance - check out my website: www.legendsdogtraining.com I have online classes that breaks down this process step by step so that it's easy to follow. Here is a direct link to the classes: www.legendsdogtraining.com/online-classes/ Hope this is helpful. Best, Alyssa Rose

miranda volen hi! this is all about establishing a foundation that puts calm behavior on cue, and builds stronger communication and trust. I’ll be opening enrollment for an online class. It’s a six week course where you can receive feedback and support through all steps of the training. If this is something you’d be interested in I can send you more info. Best, Alyssa Rose

@@legendsdogtraining I have 2 frenchies who act the same way when other dogs they don't know are around. I tried several taking classes at petco but had no luck. Any suggestions?

I'm worried about small dog syndrome, Iago is 1 year, and I can't stop him from jumping into my bed. He's more attuned to my husband, whenever I correct him he pays no attention, but last week confronted me. I try to be as firm as I can, but I'm no boss to him.

Hi Susazeu, thank you so much for watching my video, always appreciate the viewership and the comments. I think that when people think about being "disciplined" with their dog, they frequently think about correcting undesirable behavior through verbal reprimand, physical reprimand, or some sort of aversive training tool. Relying on punishment to address undesirable behavior takes a heavy toll on the relationship you have with your dog. Among many other problems it can create avoidance behavior (dog's that tune you out) and even aggressive behavior. My suggestion is to to approach the problem from a different perspective. Get creative. Become your dog's teacher instead of attempting to be his boss. Do five minute training sessions each day where you use positive reinforcement (ie. high value food rewards) to train Lago to go to his dog bed. This type of training will strengthen your relationship with your dog, improve your skills as a teacher, improve Lago's skills as a student and build a lot of value for being in his bed (instead of on yours). ;) This does not mean he will never jump on your bed, but it will mean that he's going to be all ears when you ask him to jump off and go to his bed instead. If you are interested in setting up a skype consultation, to discuss behavior and training in more detail, let me know. You can go to legendsdogtraining.com click on the "assessment form" tab and fill it out - I can get back to you with appointment times. Thank you again for watching, hope you have a great day. - Alyssa Lapinel, CPDT-KA

I fail to see any real training going on. Naturally Dulce isn't going to be bothered with the other dog when she is clearly more interested in the treat. Please show how to train without the continual goodie bag.

Naomi Bown Thanks for watching my video and commenting. Outward behavior (barking, growling, lunging) is symptomatic of the body's physiological response to the environment. When a dog is aggressive it is because their body, their nervous system, is in "fight or flight" mode. By practicing these types of exercises you can actually help the dog change their physiological response to stress triggers. Thanks again for commenting. - Alyssa Lapinel, CPDT-KA
