_Having been raised just outside of Kenosha, Wisconsin (insert American Motors Corporation), my Dad wanted to support the local auto industry. (Hence the name, Kenosha canoes). Anyway we had a brand new '71 AMC Ambassador Brougham (and yes my Father opted for the big 401 versus the 360 engine). The car was white with a black vinyl top and burgundy interior. It was the car I took my driver's license examination in. Fun car for a 16 year old kid to drive for sure._

30 year Chrysler,Jeep tech here. If they kept adding oil. You may want to check the pan on the bottom of the intake. There is a paper gasket that leaks and sucks in oil under load. And yes that front crank seal is stepped. The part that sticks out is smaller in diameter than the front cover. Make sure you replace the fuel filter too. These have an external filter back by the tank.

Great videos on this 5.9. Great engine. I had a 1978 RV built on MaxiVan w. big picture widows; it seated 9 in 3 rows -- 2f, 3middle, 4back. Carburated 360, 727tranny ran perfect. I bought used for 1200 w 275,000mi. Added over 200,000 more. For 2 years I drove 250mi a day just to work and back. Clean custom Interior w. captains chairs, carpeting, all tinted glass, etc.. Never any problems. Went to Smokey Mtns (that 360 never even noticed the grades)) and never overheated -- engine or brakes in the mountains; and to S. Florida, drove it all over. 12mpg. Eventually I saw a 2001 B3500 18passenger Maxibus cheap. Decided to move up in year and do a DIY RV. HUGE mistake 5.2 engine (9mpg) lacked power, overheated badly, front end fell apart ( only 75k miles) Electric wiring and switches burnt up (safety recall, but dealer so far away, I fixed it myself -- they wouldn't tell me how long they would take and would not furnish a loner). I would never buy another Chrysler product made after MB takeover. Everything was so cheapened and wiring was atrocious. Dodge dependability gone. Very sad to have ever sold my 1978. Those Grand Cherokees. up to including the year you have were superb super dependable vehicles. Your diagnostic approach makes a lot of sense. You don't waste money and you focus on tracking problems to use your time to advantage. You will never wear out that 5.9. If it has a 727tranny, they work smooth forever. I really enjoy your videos.

I taught some people how to ride it and that always ended with injury or a good story. Gotta thank Corey Sprock for recommending it when I was picking up extra shifts just to go faster than the 'Zillas and Banshees up the hills but still be able to ride it there and home. Love the rubber tube idea!! One trick to keep things clean. Take an old tupperware clear container with a stiff lid, cut a hole just big enough for the threaded section to fit in. Catches all the fuel and lovely crap that works out of the injector too. If you were to use a glass jar(no metal lid though...), you could really see the stream well. I set up a momentary-toggle switch on a board with the 9v battery wired in along with a pair of clips for the injector connections. You can trip the switch as fast as you want or just hold it for a long spray. Pretty nice system, dirt cheap. Running fuel through the injectors in reverse also clears out the filter cups in the top if needed.

For those watching that don't know, the injector doesn't create the pressure that enters the cylinder but rather just release the pressure made by the fuel pump into the cylinder. That's why this DIY hack works. The spray bottle (fuel pump) is pressurizing the hose (fuel rail) and the injector is releasing the pressure.

I had really bad experience with 2001 5.2. But then quality went rock bottom after about 2000 when MB took over. The 5.2 in a heavy vehicle always uses more gas than a 5.9. A lot depends on the year. They have made several completely different 318ci/5.2l engines. The 318 they made in the 60s had gobs of torque and still gave great fuel mileage. I believe it had IIRC wedge heads. The one prior to that had polyspherical heads and was so tough that it was used in tractors too. It was a bigger heavier engine. Chrysler was the ONLY American manufacturer to ever do balance check w engine and transmission assembled as a unit before it was installed in body. If I were going to pick one vehicle to cross a desert in, it would be a 66-67 Plymouth w 318, no computers, points and condenser single coil ignition (no coil over plug ignition, full size automatic tranny- no light duty tranny from a 4cyl car. Or another similar Chrysler product from those years.

I've had like 4 of the 4 liters when I was younger. I bought an '87 with 320k miles (5spd) for $200 when I was 16 and drove it to 510k without doing anything other than a clutch , water pump and tires /brakes. Love them last one I had was an grand Cherokee I sold 10 years ago and I still see the girl driving it around. Bullet proof trucks bit not so fuel efficient lol.

Not a Jeep guy, watched the video anyway because Alex is cool and I wanted to see him bring another vehicle back from the dead, especially on a budget! 👍👍

I have used Amsoil transaction fluid to repair a 4L60E. I've stopped lifter noise with Amsoil premium engine oil. 20 years of bringing cars back to life with Amsoil lubricants.

Replacement crank seal. The Magnum's really like the normal "Performance" upgrades, but the biggest blockage/hold-up is the "Beer-Barrel" intake. It is designed just for torque and falls on it's ass after 4K RPM; an intake, better cam and tune make them really get moving
