My Dad was the boss of a bodyshop in a big GM dealership. We in Switzerland have exactly the same problem with tons of salt on the road. It is taking a terrible toll on cars. Specially in the old days when rust protection was hardly existing. Every new or nearly new car we owned was thoroughly treated like that. We also treated the inside of every door that way. I remember our 63 Belair. We bought it 2 years old and we had to replace the lower half of the doorskins when the car was less than 6 years old. The car did not get this kind of treatment when it was new. I still own this car to this day! I did not have to fix a lot of rust in over 40 years. It shows that the process of protecting the vehicle can do miracles. You did a great job here and it will pay off. We used to spray huge amounts of a similar material out of special sprayguns. The car would smell a bit for a few days.

Years ago a Carfax report saved me $7-10k on a used Yukon Denali w low mileage because an accident mileage was misreported by about 40,000 kilometres, compared to the vehicles digital odometer. The accident had been an insurance write off and the guy who bought it made two mistakes, one of which was not putting a minimum bid. The odometer issue put people off of bidding and I got it for well under $10k. Some knowledgeable people estimated the value at between $12-15k. Never underestimate the value of any report that gets you information when most people can’t be bothered. 3 years later and I could still pull $10k from my Denali but it’s not for sale ;) Cheers 🍻

I'm not a mechanic by any means but I'm an engineer and have forever been a weekend warrior car dude. I fix as much as I feel comfortable and your videos are extremely helpful and inspirational to do more. Keep up the great work and absolutely love your videos. In fact I just finished spending a ton of hours fixing a rough idle issue on my mom's Chevy Venture. She absolutely loves her van and won't let me buy her a new one. After a ton of hours and parts, I finally found the problem causing the dreaded P0300 code. How satisfying it was to finally find the problem. Sadly I probably replaced a bunch of parts that didn't need to be replaced but I can live with that. Thanks again for all of the inspiration. Where I live we'd definitely call this a SUV (and a very very large one) - but in 'merica I'd have thought truck for this... what American's call a "Truck" with a bed, we call a Ute here (short for Utility) - but it's pretty unusual to see any passenger vehicle this big on the road here. Trucks here are commercial vehicles with a proper separate cab and some kind of specific rear coach - e.g. a towing rig, furniture mover, or flat-bed.

Glad to hear everyone was ok after the accident. Being in that monster of a SUV helped you all survive. Both my nephew and best friend were in accidents so bad that the first responder was surprised they were still alive and even more so that they only had minor scratches or bumps. What were they driving? Both owned first gen Ford Explorer Sports (the 2 door Explorer). One was hit head on at over 70 mph by a driver that had fallen asleep at the wheel and the other lost control in extreme weather while on the freeway, spun and flipped the car and ended up in a ditch. My friend was shaken but just a few minor scratches. Even though you were all fine problems can creep up on you in a few hours. I was driving home from work in stop and go street traffic when the car in front of me suddenly stopped short. I reacted quick enough to avoid hitting them, the gal behind me also stopped in time, but the big camper truck behind her did not. He plowed into her, she plowed into me. I thought I was fine but as the minutes passed my neck started to hurt and by the time I got home I thought it best if I get things checked out. The ER ordered x-rays and while on the table the x-ray tech asks me to open my mouth wider, and I couldn't. I ended up with lockjaw for a fews days and had to eat through a stray. Afterwards I had 4 years of pretty bad pain in my neck and back. It wasn't even that big an accident. I think they just put a new bumper on the Acura Integra and the bill was something like $1,500. (1993 dollars). I had a scrape on top of my head where it hit the roof was the only exterior sign after the accident'

GM Mechanic here. The Escalade is often (not always) considered a truck by technicians. It uses truck wheels, has a truck frame, truck suspension, etc. We call the long wheelbase SUV's like the Tahoe, Suburban, Yukon, and Escalade 'trucks' since when it comes to frame style, wheel type and suspension specs, it's practically the same exact parts as the Sierra and Silverado. Side note: Tahoe, Yukon, Escalade and Suburban are pretty much the same exact vehicle, just with different little doodads.

Alex, I'm a retired pro photographer and wanted to give a little info that will help you when filming very light or very dark subjects. You'll notice in this video that when you're standing next to your new SUV with the door open that the interior looks black, but once you're inside it looks grey. That's because light meters see everything as approximately 18% grey* so a overall white (highkey) subject will be underexposed and look 18% grey, your black interior will be overexposed and look 18% grey. In those situations you'll need to override the camera's exposure and adjust 1 /12 stops to 2 stops up or down considering the subject. Remember - underexpose dark scenes and overexpose light scenes. Back when we shot everything on film you didn't know if you'd gotten everything right until you got the film back from the lab, or you took a Polaroid using the same settings. (loved my Mamiya made Polaroid 600) and Polaroid back for my 4x5 Cambo.) * to be more accurate that 18% grey number is what I was told by my Photo instructors and read in photo magazines and books on photography, but I found out years later that, nope, it's more like a 12% grey that most Japanese camera meters are set to, or at least that was the case 20+ years ago.

Congrats on the new find I happy for you that everybody walked away from that whopper of an accident. I’ve been in a few myself it’s never fun least I know now that the Escalade is a safe vehicle still kind of want one and that look like a G wagon that hit you it seem like it came through pretty safe as well. That’s probably what I’ll under Gaten.

_Seeing the severely damaged former Escalade and knowing your family was all safe is yet another reason why buying another Escalade sure makes sense Alex. And this Cadillac sure isn't a car, so yup, it's a truck. (Granted it may be an SUV on a truck frame, but it's still in my book a truck! And a damn beautiful one at that). Great video_

Unfortunately, people are buying bigger cars to protect themselves from other ever larger vehicles. Where is this going to end?

Glad you weren't hurt , you made a good job of under sealing so I hope it doesn't get rusty as for the car my father had when I was growing up in the 1940s was a ford Model A with a soft top which I never ever saw off. I am here in New Zealand where it never snows but cars do go rusty underneath if you don't under seal them.

So glad your family and the other driver were safe from that deadly collision, a true testiment to added safety features. Lifelong suburban owner here. My rust free trucks come from middle to upper Texas... Even Florida can have salt corrosion issues from ocean salt/mist. (I'd never buy a Florida boat even) I'm in Oklahoma, never owned a rusted vehicle... but why wouldn't the states that salt their roads have separate dedicated underbody pressure systems you drive over? preventive maintenance! I mean, spend $2 to $5 to drive over upward facing high pressure nozzles with a salt neutralizing solution. 1/2 the profit could go back to the state even.

Glad youre family is okay! Looking into getting a big body GM for my family as well. A friend just got into a crash with his brand new Escalade, total loss and hes right back into another one. Congrats on the new car!

Glad you all were safe! And YES those are a truck! I called my Tahoe a truck, I call my Avalanche a truck and my Silverado is a truck- they all are built on the same platform. Beautiful truck Alex hope you folks get to enjoy that for many happy years. On Amsoil products, I daily drive an 08 Silverado with 371000km and use the semi synthetic 5W30, thoughts on full synthetic?

Oh man that really sucks. I just watched your other video when you took the Escalade in the shop for repairs and after all the full restoration work done to this vehicle only takes only one bad crash to ruin it. The good thing nobody was hurt in the crash or seriously hurt. I'm glad you and your family are safe the most important thing. You can replace the vehicle but you cannot replace a life but its just upsetting what you had gone thru in getting the vehicle you want and getting it to its full restoration status.

Glad to hear everyone was okay. Just one thing. Throw a dash cam in the family vehicles, it won't stop a crash from happening but it covers your ass incase the other driver lies. Gotta love these big body on frame GMs. They're rock solid where it counts most. I once saw a Suburban rear end a Hyundai Elantra turning half of it into a pancake. The Suburban only had a damaged grill, hood and the bumper fell off. Perhaps it needed a rad and condenser but it could easily be on the road again in a week. That Hyundai was going to be totaled for sure.

Will add: Really like your truck/car! I called my Suburban a truck, but the shorter wheelbase Escalade seemed more like a car. Also had a 2014 Escalade Premium (body colored handles and trim pieces and clear tail-light lenses, which I liked) with duel exhaust. Sounded great and seemed to have more power than the 2016 even though the rated output was slightly lower. Thanks for the video. I liked both of my Escalades, but the pickup is just a better tool for me.

Alex I’m so happy no one was hurt and absolutely love your new truck. I’m curious though, will you be keeping a sort of mild eye on your old granite gray Escalade as it goes through the auction and seeing who purchases it and eventually maybe repairs it? Kind of a nonsense inquiry if you really think about it but for me …. A part of me would still be curious as to keep a little bit of “dibs” on the old truck and see what or where it winds up. Any thoughts?

I've felt the same way about me and my family's past cars. Always wondered things like "What if I just ran a Carfax report on my old car and see where it's at?". Never actually did it though

I ran a CarFax on my previous Grand Cherokee that I had for 16 years, found it was sold at a salvage auction 6 months after I traded it on my current Grand Cherokee.

Good job done in protecting the underside with the wax product. Did you consider cleaning off the underside using a steam lance? It does a far better job than high pressure water in removing salt, oil, grease, general detritus and 'damaged' underbody sealant applied by the manufacturer, leaving it ready for its new coating.

Its 1000% a sport utility vehicle. A truck has a separated cab from its bed, or is cab only for future installation of a specialized bed such as a flat bed, or tow truck bed for examples. The first ever combined cab/utility tray in one vehicle comparable to today's suv's was the Ford Bronco which BY FORD was explained as a multi-use vehicle. That later on eventually led to the term sport utility vehicle. Sport utility vehicles were fully enclosed cabins combined with storage areas built on a trucks frame. Crossover vehicles are the exact same concept built built as a unibody in a similar fashion to a cars frame/unibody. So no, its NOT a truck. Simple facts and common knowledge.

I don’t like it when they call every uni-body with a hatch back an SUV. A true SUV is one that is built on a full frame truck chassis. So yes this Escalade is both. If you add the word pickup to truck, then you’re referring to an open cargo bed truck. Enclosed cargo is still a truck.

In regards to your transfer case being replaced if it has the auto feature on the selector that sort of gives you full time AWD avoid using that unless road conditions are severe. Running in in auto full time likely caused the transfer case to fail. Keep it in 2wd when conditions are normal.

On your exhaust, here is all you need. Magnaflow MF 12909. I had a 17 Yukon Denali and I wanted exactly what you were talking about. Leave the flapper valve and just simply swap the muffler; no cat-back or anything. Got this from Tahoe/Yukon forum but this was the go-to muffler for anyone with the 6.2L. This muffler had zero drone and was as quiet as stock until the flapper valve opened; it just overall sounded better like it should have been from the factory. I did it soon after we bought the truck and my wife never really noticed it. Just sounded better, not so much louder.

My Chevrolet Suburban XLT came to WA from AZ and was super clean like that. Retractable running boards, 3 screens in back with a VCR, a DVD and two PS2 consoles, the far back behind the third row was my office on the road with a mini fridge, microwave, coffee maker, blue tooth printer, keyboard and 17" monitor for my pad, mobile Wifi, 22 inch Gun Metal Enki Hornet wheels with Toyo Proxes R8R 335/40RR22, dual 18 gal gas tanks for 36 gallons, 4 batteries due to all the electronics with two alternators-one for motor running and one yo maintain charge on all the batteries, limo windows tent everywhere but windshield and driver/passenger, rear barn doors instead of hatch and gate, Direct TV satellite dish, aftermarket Brimbo brakes, 454 motor built bottom up with port polish alloy heads, Edelbrock air flow Intake manifold, twin Garrett turbos custom impeller and oil flow work by Texas Turbo Connetics. When it comes to accidents it's a pound for pound scenario. Your description is right in my book till the insurance company looks at it that's when they say it's a large SUV and charge you accordingly. These days protecting your family is a priority. Good luck on this one my friend and God be with you.

Loving this series, I call my Land Cruiser a truck but on other days an suv. I think the most literal truck there is, are those mining carts they used to truck material down rails. I think we’ve all seen it, and I think SUV’s still fit in with that with the large open space in the back.

I enjoy your videos. Sorry for the unfortunate mishap with your last Escalade, but it's great that you and your family all walked away from the accident, and it's also great that you were able to replace it with another. I agree with your opinion that the vehicle is a truck, a very beautiful and luxurious truck, but a a truck nonetheless. I own its sister vehicle, a 2011 GMC Yukon Denali XL. It also happens to be a diamond white pearl coat, but with a tan interior. General Motors vehicles rock!
