Paying a premium for a modern era Lego set and expecting that set to be sought after in the future is a recipe for financial disaster. This video explains why...

I love how often you tell viewers NOT to buy stuff that you aleady own 😂 The honesty about you being a collector AS WELL as a speculator is great. It’s a great reminder that while we all have our individual passions/collections that does NOT correlate to what will rise in value. People get so emotionally attached to these items and it’s very clear how this misguides their judgements. e.g. Funko Pop Market.

Nice can you share some more of your collections? Perhaps your comic book collection that would be nice man! Thanks for telling it like it is and what not everyone wants to hear 😂😂

I'm a recently emerged AFOL that started buying sets because I couldn't wait for my kids to get old enough... That turned into an obsession and part-time "business" with a decent Bricklink store and an embarrassingly large horde of sealed sets for long-term holding. I'd love to hear more thoughts from you on LEGO "investing". Watching this video more than a year out from its publication, I have to say that price trends have been very positive for large set speculators and part of me feels that with so many large sets being released, investors are not going to be able to keep up with many copies of each because of storage space, and so long-term scarcity for the most desirable sets should lead to good value growth. There is probably some fallacy in there somewhere though! Thanks for the content!

legos are too mass produced and the retail/aftermarket is too saturated to sustain speculation. combine that with the decrease in toy interest among children overall and we can forecast a pretty dismal outlook for retired sets once people wake up in a few years.

Great Video, thanks you brought this up. Stay away from buying Lego for investments. This is far over, worked from 2004-2016, topped around then, and is now in a downtrend. While buying all up is fun, getting rid of all is not. Quantities are high, also the offered stuff, and aprecition is sliding. Selling a 3-5 year old set, comes up to "It was 50* MSRP, you might have it bought at 35, so i give you 40 at max." It´s not worth it. You can dump all at once to a seller, but you get the dealers-purchase price at best, loosing you out on ALL time invested, storing costs and all ROI. Children have also no appreciation anymore, because the lines/themes go for some months! or max. a year and then are EOL. So even the kids can´t get all sets of the current line. When you ask them "Want the 2 year old riding stable?, they go, no i want all the new heartboxes instead, or so. " If the kids lost interest in getting all sets of a theme thats a warning sign." Also there are ~500 new sets every year... People can´t keep up with this developments, and are getting indifferent about it. If i don´t have this set especially, i will have another then. Stay away - It also saves you many nerves you will loose selling it. You have to be/become a company then, in most states, have to handle buyers returning opened sets, buyers slashing the price down to disgusting levels, hassling with people having no concept of value.. i could go on... A re-run of the Taj Mahal is your least problem then...;-)

One more thing... you will encounter things like... My Collector box was squished, or has got flaws during shipping... I WANT x% discount now. Or the boxes itself arriving with slight damages during your collectors-purchase, diminishing your ROI.

Excellent video. These companies are out to make as much money as possible and the makers of Lego are no different. If they're seeing potential profits being scooped up by scalpers they will move in and eliminate that market to take the profit for themselves.

Thank you for your insights! I'm very new to Lego and I suspect that the company is producing too many products to make most of them a good investment long term. I'm going to stick with the combination of personal preferences and speculative good values when purchasing my next sets to make sure owning the sets make me happy and they won't burn my money when I need to resell them

unfortunately LEGO is still a much better selling and desireable collectible than others out there. Much better than TCGs, Funkos. While Lego can reissue a lot of sets, there are some that they simply cannot anymore, and will be gone forever due to not willing to renew licenses. The best examples are the Lord of the Rings, Pirates of the Caribbean. Another thing is Lego is retiring sets far faster now, which is making sets spike up faster than before. Look at Betrayal at Cloud City, it was only around the market for around a year, got discontinued since it didn't sell up to standards, and jumped to an extreme amount on the 2ndary market. LEGO is intentionally making more sets because they know people are afraid of missing and having to pay exorbant costs on the secondary market. This is causing Lego sets to go up faster than ever before. The Mos Eisley Cantina is already sold out of Lego direct, and you will need to wait a good year to get it. LEGO is also selling out much faster than before. While people in North America and Europe are used to it, don't forget China, Japan, and other Asian countries. Bandai Namco, Hasbro, and Mattel are no longer able to compete with Lego anymore. China, they pay almost twice the price of us in US, and they are still buying it. The only thing that can beat Star Wars at the box office is realistically Marvel, but both are owned by Disney.

I like this content when you call out specific investable items and their historical prices (e.g. Taj Mahal) because it was easy for me to pull up Ebay and see their current price. I never knew anything about Lego set collecting until this video. Definitely not following this market, but it's fascinating.

I do love LEGO and I love Lego Star wars stuff. This past week I snagged six of the AT-ST Raider set with the Cara Dune minifigure. (That's all I could find) They literally flew off the shelves when Gina Carano got fired. Brick Buys stated on his channel that he bought 230 of these sets.

The fact you have ‘no desire to see the Solo movie’ stating ‘that tell’s you something’... it tells me that people who don’t watch a movie, still feel like commenting on it haha. It’s actually pretty good... is it the best? Maybe not, but making a video where you use that as an example without having seen it, saying you’re a fan.. is a bit strange. Either way, thanks for your perspective / video.
