I would want the gearbox to handle functions like adjustable ride height, openable doors etc. They add more value than a speed gearbox that's never going to be used. Even after shifting the gears, there's no way to observe the difference unless the car is motorised.

I think the gearbox is a fantastic way to teach people how they work. It makes the model feel a lot more robust too and is a nice talking point. I would definitely not buy these large models anymore if they removed the gearbox and didn’t replace it with anything compelling.
@RacingBrick
@RacingBrick 2 жыл бұрын
I don't want to sound condescending, but I think very-very few people would actually learn or understand how the gearbox works while building such set. Stacking gears does not give you an explanation, nor hiding it within the model. If the manual would give you some detailed explanation about the functionality, or there would be an app showing how it works again with detailed explanation, that would be great and very educational. But without that, it is just adding Technic pieces that supposed to do something at the end that won't even be really visible by pushing the car around.

The gear boxes aren't that hard to build. Although nobody will use it it is fun to build. I only have the bugatti and the Lamborghini. And all I ever do is build them and then take them apart and then rebuild from time to time. That, and display is all they're good for. And personally I like it that way. Stripping and building it over keeps my mind from other problems in life. I find it soothing.

awesome review, although I would disagree with dropping the inner functions because it is only a display piece. It adds immensly to the building expierence. I have built all 3 supercars and the chassis was always the one thing I was most excited for. The evolution of the gearbox was super interesting to follow. even if this year there is no evolution (which agree with you is really sad), i cannot wait to build the ferrari chassis once again.

I feel like reviewers keep forgetting one thing: collectors who have all of the 1:8 cars aren't the only ones who will buy this, just like the previous cars. If I got it, it would be my first of the kind and all the features would be unique and new to ME. Lego has to think about all their customers, otherwise these wouldn't be large scale consumer products.

Your points about the gearbox somewhat reinforce something I've been thinking for a while; Lego should bring back the Lego Racers theme for display models like this. Having two separate themes, one for Technic-built display models and one for Technic-built functional models, could help alleviate a lot of the issues I see in modern Technic. Removing the gearbox as a Technic set would likely be a bad call, since it would further the idea that Technic is losing all its functions, but it would make much more sense as a successor to Lego Racers.
@philp8872

Disagree! For looks system pieces are far better than technic. The Lego Mustang looks far better for a third of the price. (OK, it´s much smaller, but think about a 1/8 scale SYSTEM BRICK built car for 300-400 Euros!) Take a look at the old legendary supercars like 8865 and 8880: They were targeted at older children/ teenagers who didn´t "play" with Lego anymore but enjoyed building and to have some RL functions to be shown. Their gearboxes where great considering the parts available. And I think they weren´t shifted too often either and being placed on a shelf after the builder figured out how they work. The Porsche was great for being the first of its kind, the Bugatti introduced new transmission parts which was great as well. The Lamborghini was a bit of a reissure of the Bugatti, but managed to adress the critisism of the community about the looks and stickers of the Bugatti. Now the new Ferrari: I appreciate that there is a gearbox, for a Technic car of this size a functional gearbox is a must have for me (the errors in the instructions are a shame though, but can be easily fixed)! What I find disappointing is that there is no evolution concerning functions. What about functional disc brakes, a functional clutch, steering controlled headlights, LED lights, RC (like the Cada Ferrari) or maybe just a small motor to show the transmission speeds when the car is jacked up ... There are so many possibilities, but Lego ignores this and just keeps milking the collectors cow. A Lego Technic car of this size could implement all of this for a 400,- price tag, there are enough MOCers to prove this!

It's not like, if you split one theme into multiple "new" themes, you fill up the "missing" sets in the original overall-theme. You would simple have the same sets, just with a different theme name on the box. I do not see the gain here. Robo Riders, 'Style packs', Competition, small vehicles with no funktion made from technic parts, Slizer, .... all that and much more is part of the theme "Technic". Every time some sais "that's not technic" it's basically just made up.
@philp8872
@philp8872 2 жыл бұрын
@@McKrushi Yes, I agree with you to a certain point. But Technic is and was always about functions. Look at what some small 10 Euro sets offer in terms of functions. Racers were cool sets, but Technic parts without System parts will always have less accurate looks, especially nowadays when every System stud can be covered with a tile. I prefer the Mustang over any of the Racers in terms of looks. I also prefer 8880 over any of the "new" supercars. Maybe a Technic supercar should be just a generic sportscar/ offroader/ sedan/ hotrod or whatever, without a license. And licensed cars should be in the Creator Expert line.
@McKrushi
@McKrushi 2 жыл бұрын
@@philp8872 "But Technic is and was always about functions." Robo Riders was about functions? ;) That statement is simply not true. And I'm not against other themes in general, but there should be other reasons besides "It's too big for the number of pure technical functions", "it looks to good for Technic, we have to build it from bricks, because Technic has to be ugly - I guess?" xD I'm thinking more about the sheer number of sets in a theme. It's usually not that bad to create a new subtheme (not theme) if it gets confusing. Or remove a theme for the same reason. Mindstorms has only one set per multiple years... it should be re-integrated into Technic. And if the number of sets gets too high, maybe call it something like "Technic - Showroom" so it does not only include racing cars - trucks for display is a thing I think :D But I don't think there are enough sets per year for that.
@philp8872
@philp8872 2 жыл бұрын
@@McKrushi Robo Riders for example is a theme that I didn´t notice at all. You may be right with that. But Technic in its core is about showing how certain functions (of a car, an excavator, a plane....) work in RL. That is what makes it desireable for children who are too old to just play with some small set (like a Lego City car i.e.), and that is what makes adults buy and collect these sets when they think of the 80´s and 90´s Technic sets they had themself in their youth. Technic is ugly to a certain point, may it be only because of blue pins in a red car. I think there are too many sets launched each year. Less and better sets, which stay in production for longer would be better IMO. I agree with you about Mindstorms should be integrated into Technic line again.

This set and the other car models (Bugatti, 911 RSR etc) would perfectly fit in the racers series if it would still be alive. These were just cool racing cars or supercars partly built out of technic elements with just basic functions (steering, doors, suspensions). Now they sadly take up the space in the technic series which could be used for real technic sets. I don't think the designers aren't capable of doing it anymore, it's more a decision from above or the marketing

I'll agree with most comments, the gearbox is a must for me. Such a large scale would be an empty shell otherwise, and I wouldn't spend 400€ for it. What is a car, apart from the looks ? A drivetrain, steering and suspensions, that's it. For this price, I want to build the whole train, from pistons to wheels. With your arguments, we could remove the suspensions too. What is the difference with a display model ? Lego Technic is about functions, making a design that WORKS. What makes a car beautiful is how you encapsulate great capabilities in a seducing design. Having an engine and a full transmission is just like having suspensions and steering. This is the soul of the vehicle, this is what makes a Lego set something more than a simple display set (We would just buy display models otherwise, instead of Legos). I would buy such a Lego set because I know when I look at it, that the very soul of the car is inside it. Functionality meets elegance, and this is a tribute for the original model I would agree to pay 400€ for.

oh, one thing many people don't point out is regarding gaps: Many gaps aren't just oversights in the design process, but are meant to be there. If you look at the real car you'll see some gaps, like in the front hood the two big gaps are meant to be there, since are also in the real Daytona sp3. So great review as always, I like that you criticize what you don't like, since an unbiased review is the best choice, but I feel like more people should compare the set to the real car when talking about gaps and stuff. As a car lover the engine gearbox and chassis are the most enjoyable part of the build, they’d be just as cool without all the body panels in a lot of cases to me - or if the body came away from the chassis like in the case of the GT3 - I would display them without the bodies on them.

@@philp8872 Debatable. A 1/8 scale creative is simply too heavy and is not achievable, as is mentioned in the video. As for all the functions you mentioned, functional clutch is far more complicated than you think, simply because of the scale. Just look at the size of a gear box in any lego set, and you would have an idea of why that's an issue. Steering controlled head light? again, think of the scale and if they are possible to build. A somewhat achievable one is the functional brake disc, where there already have been MOCs out there achieving that with the soft 1x2 beam. But then, it won't look as good. Everything else can all be achieved by modifying your own set. Is the price a bit too high? Most likely. Then again, licensed stuffs have always been very expensive, and it applies to everything, including toys.

I only buy the technic sets for their mechanisms. Although they make great display sets , sometimes some child visits the house and gets surprised with all the functionality. I believe they should in fact keep implementing more mechanisms in their models.

Honestly, I think that the gearbox adds to the technical aspect of the set. With sets like the Raptor, 488 GTE, 911 RSR, McLaren F1 Car and many others, people complain about the lack of functionality and even extend to saying that these are not Technic sets. However, with these supercars, they include practically everything that is there on a real car, and people complain that it's too much. To be fair, it would be nice if the gearbox was more realistic or less repetitive, but I guess it is somewhat due to the limitation of the pieces. Going back to personal opinion, I love the gearboxes in these things. It really adds to the idea that you are building a Technic set, regardless of it being a "display model". This seems to be the only way that they can live up to the name on the box. I just don't understand the controversy behind it.
@RacingBrick
@RacingBrick 2 жыл бұрын
Smaller Technic sets are meant to be played, so having working and useable functions is desired. The gearbox in this set serves no purpose, the set is too big to be playable and it is a dedicated display piece, therefore having a gearbox that will never be used does not make much sense.

@@RacingBrick but it adds immensly to the building experience. And just knowing your display modell has a carefully and brilliantly designed chassis absolutley makes it feel much more exciting, than just an empty carosserie shell only ment for display
@RacingBrick
@RacingBrick 2 жыл бұрын
@@fuchs_1053 it adds so much to the building experience that even the quality folks at LEGO did not realize that the gear sequence is incorrect, so practically nobody cares about the things really going on there. It could be a bunch of random gears with a sticker that says "99 speed gearbox" and people would be still happy.

I think they should just put all these technic vehicles without technic features into their own group. Kinda like they did with the larger technic based Ferraris that were part of Lego Racers. Maybe put them under the speed champions umbrella and keep the technical stuff in technic.

Great review as always. I think I would have preferred some panel gaps and external door openers like on the Sian as opening the doors on this model does not seem to be a smooth process, and my reactions are definitely not fast enough! ;) Roll on the 1st...

While I was too late for the Porsche, I was lucky enough to receive the Bug and the Lamb from my parents for the holidays (also counted as birthday those years). I also correctly predicted a red Ferrari as the next 1:8 supercar when the Sian came out, so I think it'll be easy to subtly hint it. Absolutely worth the combined holiday/birthday prizes.

100% agree with your opinion around not needing the complex gearbox. My 2 supercars are displayed under perspex cases and rarely get touched. These sets aren't for play, for moving around, for seeing complex technic functions. They need to look amazing on display. That's it.
@extranceIT
@extranceIT 2 жыл бұрын
but they need to be nice to build, and having functions such as the gearbox adds a lot to the building experience, not only in terms of time that it takes to build it. If I just want a display set I buy "real" models, made out of plastic and metal. I personally buy LEGO also for what they offer in terms of building experience

I think I'm going to grab the Lamborghini while I still can. Cheaper, more features, and I love the doors. The chassis and attached panels seem very loose on the Ferrari. Not at risk of falling off mind you, but just floppy. What would you say is the sturdiest of the four 1:8 scale cars?

It's a techinic set so gears and mechanical features are a must. Even if the functions are complex or annoying to use I would like to have it and building it rather than having an empty shell of an display piece. If I want less mechanical functions and less technic then I would go for a creator display piece like the white porshe. I wish creator and techinc could merge more to give a more nicer looking model with even less gaps and still have the technical complexities of techinic under the surface. For the price I think lego should create more custom lego / techinic pieces to make the model even more like the real car.

I look forward to the details in the build as I enjoy the entire experience over multiple weeks before I complete each build. I really take my time and do just a little each day after long work hours to destress. It gives me joy to know the amount of creativity that went into creating such craft. This will be my 4th 1:8 piece and when I have friends over they are always impressed and in awe. As always your videos are top notch. Keep up the great work!!

You know. As a person in the target audience I would be highly disappopinted if the gearbox and suspension were NOT part of this car. I don't want another Creator set, I want to be challenged to build a very complex Technic hypercar. There is a whole community who will go all out the next months upgrading and adjusting every bit of the technical side of this amazing car, like they did on the previous 3. You clearly have to check out and take an interest in the MOC and modding community of the Lego hobby. The car looks great now, but I can't wait to see what all the people who modded the 3 previous cars will do.

the reason for the gearboxes is so they can charge the price they are charging for it and say its cause every piece its 4 to 6 cents. but in reality its just so they can charge the premium price. this is almost the price of a game console i really dont see the value to just having it sitting on a shelf after being built.

Great overview but I have to vehemently but respectfully disagree with the gearbox complaint as it is something I would literally purchase the Lego engines just to connect to the car and watch it's function. Bring able to build an actually fully functional 8 speed sequential gearbox with forward, reverse, and neutral is never not going to be absolutely amazing and I hope I can get my hands on one!

I have the lambo, the bugatti and the 911 RSR, but this one doesn't seem worth getting besides just storing it and selling it in a year or two. I love the complex gearboxes of all of these even though they are just display pieces. Knowing it's in there is enough for me, but this one seems like a devolution instead of an evolution of the previous supercars. I would love this scale for the porsche 919 or the audi R18, the lemans cars, but that will never happen I guess.
