@@jamesc1932 1:7 is huge! I've tried to copy as much of a real v16 as possible. the model has a crankshaft that is angled like the real ones, the two camshafts even had to contain 45° angles, which is not so easy with Lego. the ignition scheme is also like the real engines of this type. very few recognize the effort behind it. i could have made it easier for myself and controlled the valves according to a simple scheme, but i wanted to do it right. do you know the video where i transport the engine? kzbin.info/www/bejne/fmbWn2uZiZaZmas

the crankshaft is supported at nine points, the camshafts at five points each. the valves are returned by gravity. everything is relatively lightly polluted. even the pistons only run between a large number of axes, so that there is hardly any friction :-)
@bertdewaal6350
@bertdewaal6350 3 жыл бұрын
Long ago I worked at a hospital that had three of these as a triple redundant backup in case the power-grid went down. The idea was that one engine would run 24/7 regardless, that way if the local power-grid failed, it would immediately take over to run the hospital. If that happened, the second V-16 would start as a backup for the first. The third V-16 was a backup in case #1 or #2 failed. Could also be used to alternate for maintenance.

This was really neat.. I have one of these that I have to do a check list on at a building I maintain. I don't think people realize, just how big these units are until they are standing in front of one, or rather, off to the side of one.. I kindly ask, on the end of the block, there is one of the grey shocks absorbers or grey spring for the typical use of vehicle suspension systems.. What does it approximately do on this model. is it an "In-Case" something lets go in the crank shaft to jammed up piston, and this would allow a "break-away" type system so no parts actually get physically broken? Either way, this was neat. oh, a side note as per the unit I mentioned, it has a diesel fuel tank, well, actually it has two, one on each side isolated by a ballistic steel and brick walls, in case one of the single unit valve train heads desires to not stay put and grow wings and fly and mach 17.. The armored walls have 3/8" to 1/2" thick ballistic plate cladding, on both side of each wall. But the tanks if I remember correctly, are 5,000 gallons each, totaling 10K gallons. The system of course is fully automated, but can manually be started. Although, it has never in the 25 to 45 years ever been checked to see actually how long that much fuel will last running the loads that it normally would see on the generator, but, it is assumed that the fuel would last about 3 to 6 months. Again, I do not know that factually. It does it auto checks and runs for an hour or two, once a week, during the summer time, and once a month during the winter time. It has ever only needed to come on once in the 45 to 65 years since from what other employees that worked in my job before me told me, and can only confirm my 25 to 30 years that is never did need to be required to keep out systems operational, other then the testing and its self auto running to as a safety check. The Generator the diesel engine is connected to, has a total output of 990KW (990,000 kilowatts) and 24 rectifiers, or to say, a pair of 12 rectifiers, as one set is a back up that are paired up the other side. if one fails to handle the load, or will not sinc the phases, the system can drop one of the 12 out, and acquire one of the other 12 and put to work. The battery store room, about 90 feet away, is massive too. The entire floor (concrete floor) is suspended on springs, and dampers and cabling ties, isolated from the walls, in case of earthquake stuff, not that we live in that zone, but being the age of the building and its old nature, that was from the WW2 era. and when considering that notion, my city was a target, due to the industrial and tech city that the city was, and kinda still is. anywhat. I enjoyed seeing this.. You took the time to post the video. well, I took the time to show you that I appreciated it. Thank you..I do wonder what parts you used for pistons though...
@legolaus1
@legolaus1 3 жыл бұрын
Hello and thanks for the information! :-) I always find it very interesting to write to people who are familiar with this subject! you always learn a lot! Unfortunately, I have never seen such a large engine up close. I used to drive a truck myself, but only up to 440hp. to your questions ... the spring should only be used to keep the chain under tension and, if necessary, to dampen vibrations. the pistons are the mack rims that run between 8 long axles, which in turn are attached to the 5x7 frame. the rims fit exactly in between and move with almost no friction :-)
@drubradley8821
@drubradley8821 3 жыл бұрын
@@legolaus1 chain tensioner... now I see it what is going on. Clever with the rims, that put then at a really good scale for this model.. well done sir.
@legolaus1
@legolaus1 3 жыл бұрын
@@drubradley8821 Thank you very much :-) At first it was just an idea and the rims fit exactly between the axles when they are arranged in a 3x5 grid. the second idea was to use the pistons of the lego fake motors as valves. one difficulty that i hadn't considered at first was the offset of the camshafts. with the v16 you have to switch to 45 ° twice. a friend had a good idea. everything else is actually just a case. The turbochargers looked unrealistic at first, only the rims alone have not yet made it. But i had found a bionicle part from the children of my life partner that fit exactly on the rims and it looked good
