Russell tells a story of the first day of shooting. Ridley was sizing him up, and said “You’ve got the impending battle in the clearing ahead, but for a moment a bird appears. You watch it for a moment, then follow it with your eyes as it takes flight. You smile a little as you watch it move across the landscape, which takes you back to the reality of what’s about to happen.” Russell said the cameras started rolling and he did exactly what was said, adding his own little details to the moment. Then he said Ridley called cut, came up to him and said “You’ve and me are gonna be fucking great together.”

Which is exactly why it didn’t make sense that Quintus would control the praetorians. He was a legion general and second in command to Maximus. You could understand and believe him betraying Maximus to take over as commander but there’s no way any emperor would give him command of the Praetorians as well. Too much power. He would have the loyalty of the legions AND guard. They would be kept separate exactly for this reason. You don’t want Praetorians loyal to anyone other than the emperor.

The actor who played Proximo (the Gladiator trainer) was Oliver Reed. He was an extraordinary british actor, with a very interesting, fascinating and atypical life. He also was known for his alcoholism, having some scandals on TV and cinema as a consequence of this. During the filming of Gladiator in 1999, he sadly passed away. He had been sober for months, but one night (during a break from filming the movie) in an Irish pub in Malta (after a bet), he drank three bottles of Jamaican rum, eight bottles of German beer, numerous double whiskeys and challenged five young English sailors of the Royal Navy to arm-wrestling at The Pub bar (which after this incident was called Ollie's Last Pub). His bill, which was never paid, is preserved in a decorative frame in the bar.

I've read that Proximo was originally supposed to be alive at the end and freed when Maximus defeated Commodus, but Oliver Reed died before that could be filmed, so the footage of Proximo being arrested was turned into the lead up to him being stabbed to death (shown from behind with another actor standing in for Oliver Reed as Proximo).

Love this movie! "What we do in life echoes in eternity" This quote gets truer and truer the older I get! At the very start of the movie Maximus overrides an order from Quintus to move their artillery back. He says the danger to their cavalry is "acceptable." This might give you the idea that Maximus is a callous commander who uses his men as pawns. He immediately turns this on its head by going off to his secret side army to lead the cavalry charge himself. He wouldn't order his men to take a risk he wouldn't take himself. That is a beautifully subtle bit of character writing to clue the audience in to what kind of man and leader the main character is. "Sometimes the frost makes the blade stick." This is my favorite historical line in cinema. Praetorian guards (The soldiers guarding the emperor, like the secret servic, were elite soldiers, but with limited field and combat experience). That word of advice he gives the soldier before killing him is advice even the lowest soldier in the ranks in that campaign wouldn't need. They would know... the frost on the blade would make it stick to the sheath, so best to at least prep it for utilization beforehand (like drawing it before intended use). He is challenging the soldier with a direct call to his lack of skill and expertise in true combat. And there are some others fun-facts, the scene in which Commodus yells "Am I not merciful?" right in his sister's face was improv at that point. Joaquin Phoenix was just scripted to say it the one time. He ad-libbed the repeat of the line as a menacing yell right in her face and that is real shock on Connie Nielsen's face. The actor playing Proximo (Oliver Reed) died during production, if you rewatch the movie with that in mind you can tell that some scenes were altered to use the remaining footage they had of him, that probably explains this scene. Also, look when they actually stab Proximo, they filmed it so you just see his outline, concealing their use of a stand-in. I´m was curious if you'd pick up on one of the melodies and structure of that battle music in Gladiator was also used in a piece for Pirates since I guess Zimmer just really liked that melody and figured it fit both epic battle and epic daredevil stuns and escapes pretty well. Good memory on the ears! Keep up the good work.

I don't know where I learned about the Praetorians, but somehow, they were pretty much common knowledge when I was young. Maybe it was all the old sword and sandal movies they used to show on TV back in the day. history and classic literature used to be incorporated (in distorted and dumbed down form) into pop culture entertainment a lot.
@goodshipkaraboudjan2 ай бұрын
The personal bodyguards were the Numerus Batavorum (Germanic Guards) at the time due to the Praetorians having a bad habit of killing Emperors. "I, Claudius" does a good job portraying the differences. Most Emperors kept the Praetorians happy with bonus payments because they were useful but also kept them at an arms length away.

The fact that Commodus was horny for his own sister seems astonishing and crazy to us, but the noble families of Europe were incredibly inbred. Partly that was because of the need to continue a noble lineage and also because peace treaties were often bolstered by the intermarriage of royal children from different kingdoms. When WWI broke out, the British King, the Germán Kaisar and the Czar of Russia were first cousins.

Originally, the gladiatorial contests were a religious issue but gradually became a contest of bravery and to let the people know that Rome was in control of its own destiny. This degraded to the games as shown in the film. It was said that in order to keep order you just needed to give them bread and games. Chariot racing was also part of the games and Rome took part in the Olympic Games in Greece.

Of course the soldiers that were about to kill him wouldn’t leave him go, since those WERE NOT his soldiers, he’s got the loyalty of all of the army, BUT those were not army, but pretorians, the personal guard for the Cesar, so of course they’re obligated to be loyal to the emperor, in this case: Comodus, and of course they wouldn’t know about both, how much Marcus Aurelius would trust Maximus and about Comodus acting against the will of his father and even killing him to prevent Maximus from becoming the actual emperor. His army, his loyal ones, as it was said later, would be ready to come back once they knew Maximus was alive, but obviously they didn’t get to know since Cicero, his assistant, was killed before he could bring Maximus’ army.

Before the current Gladiator 2, Nick Cave came up with a way to bring Russel Crowe back. After dying in the first film he wakes up in Elysium only to find it in ruins. It seems that the old gods are being overtaken by Christianity. So they send Maximus out to kill Jesus. Somehow Jesus sends him back to earth in the body of a Christian and makes him immortal. At the end we see a montage of him fighting in every major war throughout history before closing on him as a general in the Pentagon.

The Emperor could have any woman he wanted. Caligula for example tried to conceive children with all of his sisters. In those times while it was very frowned upon the imperial family would always try and keep power within their family and Dynasty. Take Cleopatra in Egypt for example the Ptolemy family were always intermarried to maintain the family lineage and concentration of power. It was of course frowned upon by the general population and by patrician families who are leaders of the Senate.
