The upright fence stones are a type of sandstone known as Lonky Stone. Used in mid to late Victorian times for that purpose. Town and Urban Councils would order it from the quarries which I believe were near Chorley and Rivington. It spilt horizontally like slate, and was unfit for paving because it would flake when weathered, but it proved effective as fences/barriers between and around properties. It wasn't used for roofing as suggested earlier, the pieces you featured were way too heavy to put on a roof. A similar type of rock, but in much smaller sizes was used for roofs, replacing the former thatches. Slate was dearer, but far lighter and weatherproof. As the price of roof slate dropped with improved quarrrying techniques it soon became the go to roofing for Britain, being lighter, easier to work and use, and more durable.
