I had a couple of terrible bouts with kidney stones in 2009. Then I had another couple in 2017. It wasn’t until much later I realized something. In the interim period I had moved to a house that had a lemon tree that produced big, beautiful, fantastic lemons. I squeezed them in water, on fish, anything I could think of. For 8 years, no kidney stones. After leaving that house, I became prone to them again. Most pain I have ever felt in my life. I started regularly drinking water with lemon again. Been stone free ever since. Okay, could be coincidence. But I can tell you, I’m not waiting for someone to do a randomized, double blind, placebo controlled, crossover study to prove it works. My real life results are good enough for me.

Thanks For the info. I too have a very tough problem with kidney stones and looking for something to give a hand with them. I have found many real studies that show positive benefits from lemon juice. But beware Vitamin C is said to promote kidney stones where luckily lemons also have citric acid that helps even more to stop kidney stones. I am using lemon juice for other reasons so it will be a good test!

Dehydration is the #1 cause of stones. You need to keep the urine diluted of stone-causing substances and flush the crystals that could become stones. Lemon juice is a urinary alkalinizer so it can help deter calcium oxalate and uric acid stones...but it can cause other types to grow. Apart from getting a stone analyzed you can do a 24-hour urine test to see what's causing your stones. (You may have passed others without knowing.)

He said that I could drink 3 liters of lemonade, mixed at a particular strength, every day or I could take potassium citrate as a supplement to gain the same effect. Lots of people don't really like drinking water, so if a little natural flavor helps the water go down, that's probably the biggest benefit. If lemon water is replacing other less healthy drinks, that would also be a benefit. And people could just say they like lemon water and forget about inventing "health benefits"

Same with ginger, juice it and have in green tea. And rinse with water after to dilute the acids. And yes, don't know if it helped, but I completely reversed my type 2 diabetes while having about 2 tablespoons of lemon juice, ginger juice through the day in tea. I make a pot of green tea in the morning and drink about six cups a day, Also over all diet changes to Mediterranean way of eating, intermittent fasting, and walk an hour a day. I also had scary high cholesterol, tons of bad markers in my blood work, all blood tests completely back to normal now. 😁😁🙏🙏

I’m a spearfisherman and I spend 10 hours a day on the water and hydration is really important. This post is worth its weight in gold for anyone listening because I swear I have noticed that pomelos or som o as they call them in Thailand are the best way to hydrate. I don’t care what anyone says, doctors or otherwise. Nobody knows what they are talking about. Pomelos have given me the best hydration, way better than drinking straight loads of water. It’s ok to mix in sips of water when you consume the pomelo. I know for a fact this works and am actually a very surprised pro athletes etc seem like all they do is drink loads of water which I do not believe is the best way to hydrate… it seems like it is but it’s not.

Lemon juice is a urinary alkalinizer (raises the pH). It can help deter calcium oxalate and uric acid stones but cause other types to grow. So you need to get a stone analyzed or do a 24-hour urine test to see what's causing them. I used to live in London UK, and I don't like tea or coffee. My main choice of drink was tap water, as everything else is very expensive. Unfortunately, London tap water tastes disgusting: flat and stale, like it's had all the life taken out. So, about 40 years ago, I started adding a squeeze of lemon juice to my glass of water. Vast improvement! I still drink about a litre of it every day. Though I admit to getting lazy, and now instead of fresh lemons I use the squeezy bottles of juice from Lidl (other brands are available, but they don't fit well in my fridge door!). I no longer live in London, but it still adds a lift even to good water.

I drink it in the morning 1/2 lemon with a glass of hot-warm water for about a year now. I also have 15ml of evoo before I drink the water. I find as soon as I finish I have to go to the toilet. I can vouch for that but I don't really see any improvements.

Sorry simply speaking to the point that plant based iron is much more poorly absorbed. Not that you can’t meet your needs but need to be a little more intentional than the meat eaters. Dr Weening is plant based

@@TalkingWithDocs Thx for the reply, Dr. Z. I don't want people to think you can't get the nutrition you need from a plant based diet. Good job reducing soda. It's hard. I probably drink 12 ounces of diet cola every day. And thumbs up, Dr. Weening. I've been veganish since I was 11. 58 years!!!

I somehow developed Kidney stones at age 30. I went to a urologist that was an older guy. He told me to drink a glass of lemonade everyday. So I drink diet lemonade and the guy was right; no more kidney stones. I stopped doing it and kidney stones came back. Started drinking lemonade again and had no more kidney stones. I can’t speak for everyone but lemonade works for me in stopping kidney stones.

I drink one to two mugs of hot water with a slice of lemon in it before having my first cup of coffee so that the coffee doesn’t dehydrate me too much. The lemon gives the semblance of a “drink” rather than just water and being hot (just out of the Kerrigan machine) makes me sip rather than gulp. So healthy choices, but not magic!

I wash lemons then slice them in half, place them in zip freezer bags. They seem to be juicier after freezing them. I just take out what I need and put them in a bag in the fridge. Every morning I juice lemon with hot water and have first thing with a straw. Plus a c vinegar followed by a pint of water. Gives my lazy bowel a kick start. Also eat a-lot of fish so I squeeze lemon on . Very healthy and seems to suit me.

Some of my Asian friends/colleagues swear by a concoction of warm water, lemon juice, apple cider, honey, and cinnamon. I’m not convinced it really has any health benefits, but I drink it when I’m not feeling well. It may be a psychosomatic response, but it really does provide some relief.

That’s an interesting take. We certainly are not making educated guesses. We are however reviewing the existing scientific research on this topic and presenting the findings. We have always said just because there isn’t evidence doesn’t mean it doesn’t work. Maybe means they haven’t done enough research yet.

Can you guys do Zinc 50mg. I've taken it ever since I was 17 for Acne and I'm 51 and I think I had to raise it up a bit to half of another pill. Sometimes I do break out but mostly when I've tried to stop taking it and mostly just see what would happen. I tried that a couple of years ago in the fall. I went off of it for 10-12 days and nothing in that time frame then I started to take it again and my face cleared up and every once in a while I would get one and I would increase it a bit and I could tell it would go down half in 5-8 hours. I'm totally not kidding either. And I take C-500mg. six days a week and Echinacea 350mg. Every day. And Melatonin it's hard for me to stop thinking before bed and because I can't do much because I have hips that take turns going out enough to have to go to the chiropractor right now the left side and my herniated disc. My dad would read health magazines all the time. Those are the main ones I take. What do you doctor's think about Zinc.

I drink coffee on a hot day because I like coffee. The mass of a cup (350 g) vs the mass of a body (70 kg) is too small to make a significant difference. It cools somewhat while on the desk. The citric acid has no path to the kidneys. It gets processed and coverted to neutralize it. If you had acid in the blood, that would be a bad day. You're more likely to dissolve the teeth. I would squeeze it or use lemon juice instead of dealing with a piece of lemon pulp in my glass.
