Aspartame in Diet Coke caused numbness in my hands and was beginning in my legs after 15 years of use. I stopped drinking Diet Coke for 2 weeks and it went away. Then I drank just one and the numbness came back. I decided to cut out soft drinks completely. I may get artificial sweeteners in others things, but overall I try to purchase things (like jello for example) made with real sugar.

I know diabetics who have used artificial sweetener for so long that nothing natural tastes sweet at all!. I can always tell if something has artificial sweetener in it, it's always that aftertaste. I use sugar in my coffee and tea. I was trying to lower the amount I used and simply reduced it by a teaspoon at a time.. I've reduced my coffee by 3 teaspoons and my tea by half a cup for a gallon. Now the restaurants that serve sweet tea are making it too sweet for me. Others feel the same way and have started ordering half and half tea. They fill the glass with half sweet tea and half unsweetened tea for a nice blend. Personally I've seen more success in lowering the amount of sugar than sweetener. Some people are even using two types of sweeteners, maybe for a price saving of the more natural tasting. When I considered artificial sweetener, there were already reports of the danger of using them. But the thing that kept me away from sweetener was the aftertaste. Some people don't care for sweets but for the ones who do, consume in moderation! And remember, birthday cake has no calories or other bad things!🎂 Thanks for sharing another captivating topic!

This is a very complex area and it is difficult to throw all artificial sweeteners in one basket. For instance take Sucralose. It is a modified sugar molecule that is clorinated. This sounds a little scary but then think about salt. Salt is clorinated Sodium and the chlorine locks the molecule down so that it cannot be broken - Same thing with Sucralose. The Sugar molucule is locked down which makes it heat stable, it cannot be broken down so exits the body in your urine. Sucralose is also 600 times sweeter than sugar, so I find it difficult for so such a little amout that does not break down to do you any harm. If you can prove me wrong with some study you have in hand please do.

Hey Docs, this is a really good subject. I stay on "diet" drinks as much as possible. My question is why are the Zero, drinks better tasting than "diet" drinks? Think Coke Zero and Diet Coke. Think Pepsi Zero and Diet Pepsi. There are some other similar examples entering into the market. Are Zero drinks all the same basic ingredients? I think safety concerns here are well founded. Thanks Docs. Keep up the good work. Hey Weening, have you tried Kale Zero, yet?

I am confused about the statement, (dietary) glucose is required in our diets (4:15). I am not advocating a carnivore diet, but there's no glucose in a carnivore diet and yet some people seem to do fine on it.

Growing up, my younger sister was a type I diabetic so the only sweets in the house was candy she snuck in. Even now, I find the taste of ‘regular’ soda too sweet. There are many recipes for cobbler and pies where I use half the sugar the recipe calls for. A sweet lemon pie? Mine are tart, like lemons! 😅

What about Stevia?

So one of the artificial sweeteners is possibly dangerous (in any quantity?), so I should go back to sugar even though my doctor says I have metabolic syndrome? My triglycerides went WAY down since cutting out high glycemic index foods and using artificial sweetener in my morning coffee and in some dressings and the occasional baked goods. I think your broad recommendation based on one new sweetener (we use mostly Splenda) is not well thought out. I expect better from the two of you, though I am thankful for the info about erythritol as I use a blend (Trivia) in my morning coffee and have a family history of heart disease. How about info on Splenda and stevia?

I cut out sugar in tea/coffee a long time ago and rarely have diet drinks, I seemed to be able to ‘train the receptors’ such that any drinks with sugar including those with sweeteners taste awful now. But candy and sweetened dairy still need more training, so moderation and forming good eating habits is the approach. Plus monitoring by heathy partner!

A quick Internet search says that Erythritol is naturally occurring in peaches, watermelon, mushrooms and grapes. Are you suggesting to also avoid naturally occurring Erythritol or only the artificial? I tend to stay away from soda (regular and diet), but love all of the food above. Whole foods, mostly plant based and water is what my body does best with.
@lbar97202 ай бұрын
Yes, they're talking about the artificial-man-made stuff, that is created in a Lab; not whole foods.

Wow. You can put a bit of juice in plain soda water---I do it for my husband. Sometimes I squeeze an orange into his water, or use 1/4 cup of apple juice, or squished strawberries, frozen berries. Just don't drink a whole lot of juice cause lots of sugar in it.

Slowly wean yourself off the sodas whether they are diet or regular. The diet sodas actually make people hungry. The regular sodas add calories thus adding extra weight to our bodies which is most often the cause of Type 2 Diabetes. You will feel better, lose weight and be in better health by getting off all sodas. I know it's hard, been there, done that, but if I can do it anyone can do it. Lots of luck!

I drank Caffeine free diet coke for nearly 30 years ! sometimes 6-8 cans a day SMH. I turned 60 in April and i was pre-diabetic for a few years, A1C was up to 6.5 then dropped to about 5.3 in about a year and a half. After my 2nd hip replacement in Nov. 2023 my A1C went back up to 6.0. Other than sleep apnea (CPAP since 2020) and gout (2018) from eating too much seafood (shrimp) I'm relatively very healthy. Since Jan 2020 i stopped all brown sugar & flavored creamers and replaced it with Monk Fruit which has Erythritol in it. Its a one to one ratio compared to real sugar. Now i add some ground cinnamon and a pinch of pink Himalayan sea salt (to remove the bitterness). I drink purified water all day mixed with 4 frozen berries (Black, red, blue and strawberries). Hope all those years of drinking diet soda don't harm me in my later years!
