That deserved a standing ovation. Lena commandeered that stage. That is being at the center of your power and knowing yourself..

During an era when having talent actually meant something. Outstanding.

It was 1981...when a standing ovation still meant something. (These days, just about everybody gets a standing O.)

As a teenager growing up outside NYC, I was fascinated by the commercials for this show and finally took myself to see it when it hit Washington, DC two years later. Even after doing it pretty much nonstop for two years, Horne was electrifying. Almost four decades and more concerts than I can count later, I still rank it as one of the top 3-4 live performances I've ever seen.

She was from New York but was proud of her Southern heritage. She never forgot the struggle even while enjoying the success. That accent, like a Southern Belle who is proud to be from the South..and was not afraid of being black. That persona was saying, “It took 50 years, I earned it and have the battle scars to prove it. I believed I could even when no one else believed.”

I saw her show twice. She was sensational. Her absolute ethereal Beauty just took your breath away. She kept the audience spell bound by the shear magic of her breath taking Great Beauty.

Literally at a loss for words. What word do you use to describe her? "Diva" isn't enough to describe it.

Beyonce is too young to be given the title Queen........Aretha, Gladys, Roberta, Patti, Dionne, Tina.....they earned the title Queen. Give Beyonce time......she'll earn and deserve the title.......but not yet. Beyonce has more living to do!

hsbthree I would have also given an ovation to the magnificent ending to the song. Gave me chills. OOOOHHH and the way she stands at the beginning when the mic goes away and the curtain rises. STARPOWER

hsbthree oh you noticed. But they could not deny her great beauty and that is why those bastards stood up because her great beauty was dazzling and mesmerizing so THAT THEY HAD TO STAND AND PAY HOMAGE TO HER GREAT BEAUTY.

It is understandable. They were so MESMERIZED by that BEAUTY, that dammit they were FROZEN for a moment! HELL, my mouth falls to the floor every single time I STARE at this woman! LENA HORNE IS/WAS quite possibly the MOST NATURALLY BEAUTIFUL woman that has walked this EARTH! The audience should be forgiven for the delayed reaction.

Lena Horne's beauty was so rare that she was actually a freak of nature. The audience was spell bound. Eventually, the entire audience stood up and paid homage to her rare beauty.

at her show i has the priviledge of seeing more than a few times, Ms. Horne had many well deseved standing ovations...she had the audience wrapped up in her arms. RIP lovely sweet lady. BT Sherman Sneed £ Michael Frazier thank you too! RIP💘

I think Ms. Horne’s southern voice was part of her appeal. I dare say I felt a similar way listening to Bette Davis at times. But I don’t understand why I don’t hear her any trace of her NY accent. Nevertheless, I wouldn’t change a thing. RIP Lena
