To me, the most significant difference between rabbits and hares is the fact that hares are born ready to run, with fully developed brains, their eyes open, covered in fur and with teeth and claws. These babies are pretty much ready to take care of themselves as soon as they're dry, while rabbits are much more similar to rats, mice and other den-dwelling rodents whose kits are completely helpless for close to two weeks. Helpless babies are very often born to social animals who live in families or tribes, where there are two dedicated parents and/or multiple related adults around to help their mothers care for them. All the research I've seen indicates hares tend to be territorial loners and almost never live in groups in the wild, so fully developed kits help assure the survival of the species. Longer gestational periods - especially in small animals - tend to produce babies born ready to run, which often indicates their mother is on her own with no familial support system, so bears 100% of the responsibility of caring for her offspring. Of course there are exceptions, including many small cat species, which are loners and seldom live in groups in the wild yet still produce litters of extremely dependent kittens who have no defense mechanisms other than staying hidden for several weeks. It's believed small cats do not live in groups, but the undeveloped state of newborn kittens has always made me wonder if small feline species might live in groups of related breeding females in the wild and help one another care for and protect their babies, especially since this mothering style has been seen in feral domestic cat groups; perhaps we just haven't documented this behavior in the wild yet.

My favorite rabbit moment happened a couple years ago. I was outside, indulging in a bad habit, when I saw a hawk descend right on a rabbit before my eyes. The rabbit wasn't killed though, it did the most amazing backflip and kicked the hawk in the face. I know he/she kicked it because the hawk's head jilted backwards. It was the most ninja move I have ever seen an animal make. It did a backflip and kicked a hawk in the face. I can't tell you just how amazed I was to see it. It was awesome. I wish I caught it on video to prove it.

I work at an SPCA in my area and we recently had a young girl bring in a wild baby hare thinking it was a domestic rabbit. She had it for a few days and was planning on keeping it with her rabbit! She brought it in because it was covered in ticks and she didn’t want it around her other pets. I’ve been bringing the hare back and forth to work with me as none of the other workers are familiar with rabbits or hares and it’s not quite old enough to be weaned. We are now trying to figure out a way to successfully release it. Thank you for making this video! This information is definitely needed to prevent people from interfering with wildlife!

@@dubistverrueckt I was feeding it goat milk, alfalfa hay and leafy greens under the recommendation of a vet who worked with wildlife. Sadly, the only certified wildlife officers/rehabbers we have on the island where I live, are 2-3 hours away. We had contacted them previously regarding wildlife that had been brought in and they would tell us to to either release it or they would offer to come euthanize the animal. We did consult with a vet who is on our board of directors and they recommended an area for us to release him once we knew he was stable enough to be on his own and before he became accustomed to humans. He was released about a week ago and was happy to be back in the wild!

i lived in West Texas where the jack rabbits are abundant. Got a dog. A hunting/tracker dog even. A Texas Blue Lacy. He loved to try to chase the jack rabbits. Finally one day he sorta like, seemed to come to a learning or a realization, in a doggie way, that was never gonna catch and eat one. hahaha. So instead, he would give initial chase thereafter, and then quickly give up and sit and watch them run circles around him. 😅 Best dog I ever had.

Lacey dogs are the best. Great combo of the best parts of the hounds and the heelers. Smarts of a herding dog, persistence of a hound. And they are just a traditional working unofficial breed. If it looks like a lacy and has the smarts to be one, then it is one. BTW, I have no idea where the term "lacy" came from. Do you know? I have heard it might be from German.

I had never heard of that breed, so I just looked them up, absolutely beautiful. I’m from Texas and would definitely love to own the official state dog but I feel like a dog like that needs real physical work to be happy. I can do long walks, but, other than that, I would not have any real work to keep them stimulated. Unless I’m wrong, I’m praying I’m wrong. Do you have any feedback? What a beautiful breed.

@@mattlawson714yessir they are so dang pretty agreed. Yessir you are fully right. They are active and must have some work to do. Ranch or hunting being the best, as it is their instinct. In rural Texas, they use them as “hog dogs” hunting in packs to hunt down thos pesky invasive destructive wild hogs in TX and elsewhere. Switching to feedback- my story- my dog. A very good dog he was. Pre-trained, very well trained by the original owner. Trained to track downed deer. But I am a city-dweller. Only go out to the West TX to hunt a few times a year. So he lived in my apartment with me. It was hard, but again, he was very, very very well trained! Sit, stay, heel, kennel commands, all of it. But caution! Caution I must warn! This breed can be a violent and aggressive breed if not immediately properly trained from the beginning!!!! But also, fortunately, I was able to make it work because next to my apartment in WTX there was a huge, huge golf course that we would go on each day to run around and chase rabbits and such. And in Houston next to my apartment there is a huge urban forest that we would go hike in and I just let him go free and enjoy himself. Very good. But they HAVE to be trained properly from the BEGINNING. All caps is always annoying, I grant you, haha, but I cannot stress it enough. If you do not kennel train them to make their kennel their safe cave while you are away at work during the day, they WILL tear up your house or apartment. Training is never never never cruel. 100% opposite. And I have major anger issues against the idiots in the world who think that correcting a dog’s bad behavior is somehow cruel. You know the type I am sure!😅 Anyways, again, it can work if you are a city person. But yes, they HAVE to have work. They HAVE to have socialization and correct training, from the beginning! Ok well, good luck out there, fellow internet stranger!

@@mattlawson714 there are also some great online resources of owners’ forums or fellow Lacy owners communicating online. Very good resources to learn about owning one if you want. City owners and rural owners, breed risks, training tips, et cetera. It is such rare breed that it is not “officially recognized” by the big boys at the official AKA association. Hahaha… so Lacy owners had to make their own, independent, Blue Lacy Owners’ Association. This will also be an excellent resource to learn more. And again, good luck!

@@mattlawson714 yes and also a good guard dog too! As said previously can be aggressive if not immediately and regularly correctly trained. I mean, their instinct is to take down hogs, violently, and to herd cattle, after all. Haha so yes, a good guard dog to. Mine had a couple of incidents against other dogs, but not against people. Was always generally accepting of people. And always growled when someone knocked at my door, friend or foe. Ok welp, that is sooooo much feedback, I got too excited on telling my story maybe. But, there it is, haha. Much to consider! And a great breed when handled correctly.

There is a huge hare population where I live, and there is always 1+ hares on my lawn. They seem to leave my flowers and plants alone, and while they munch on the grass, they do no damage at all. I love sitting on my porch in the evenings and watching them come around. BTW, they sleep during the day and are active in the evenings.

One thing that has amazed me about hares is how well they appear to have adapted to urban areas because I often see the white-tailed jackrabbit in Calgary (a city of 1.3 million). They appear to be used to humans as I often watch them forage for minutes before they run off. However, I have never seen a cottontail in the city, but my parents have seen them running through their backyard in Lethbridge to the south. I enjoy watching both immensely since my current residence doesn't allow pets and they remind me of my old rabbits.

Lagomorphs are probably my favorite verity of animals in the same group because you have sweet baby (rabbits) on one end and insane forest mage (hares) on the other. Pikas are somewhere in the middle.

Hares are pretty incredible but you have to remember that we can only have them as pets if we domesticate them as babies and keep them as pets as long as we have them. Wow! How great is that!!! We had an extra credit assignment in Ag-Science class to take care of a rabbit for the whole year and show it at the fair. It was awesome because if you had good grades you could keep your rabbit in class with you, I'd always keep him in my jacket so his head would be out the top. Everybody taking part would also eat lunch with our baby rabbits as we'd get the little salad bowels that came with lunch and have the rabbits eat beside us.

I prefer rabbits (domesticated ones) to snuggle with, obviously, but hares are much more fun to draw! Their dramatic elongated shapes are wonderful to exaggerate for stylised art. So yes, keep your domestic bunnies close to you in your nice warm home, where they need to be, and appreciate hares stretching and contorting thrmselves as they sprint, making use of their wide open spaces, from a respectful distance as art models :)

I like them both. I live in the sandhills of New Mexico where we have plenty of both to enjoy watching in the wild. I had never been around an abundance of hares before I lived here. It is clear watching them both how different they are. The hares (jackrabbits) remind me more of antelopes than they do cute rodent-like creatures. Huge things!

That’s because they are not rodents. As Lorelei mentions rabbits, hares and pikas form the mammalian Order Lagomorpha. Rodents like mice, rats, squirrels and capybaras form the order Rodentia. Lagomorphs are strict herbivores with hindgut fermentation of cellulose. Rodents are mostly omnivores with unspecified digestive systems. Lagomorphs are also genetically much closer to Primates than to Rodentia.

Accurate in what you said, however there are 2 other differences that you did not cover, the hare has red meat whereas the rabbit has white meat. The range of a Hare can be up to 50Km or 30 miles but the rabbits range is only around 1Km 0.6 mile.

Ever since I was a young boy I loved Hares, in fact they are the reason why I like Rabbits. If I could have a pet Hare I would. They are just badass with those massive legs and ears. Before one of my youth baseball games, someone had lost a ball over the fence during warm-ups. After warm-ups, we still had time before the game to go look for it in the tall weeds. As we kicked the weeds around, one of my teammates either kicked, or kicked near to a jackrabbit. We saw it leap, and after it landed there was a trail of dust like a cartoon. 50 mph is definitely believable, The kid that dislodged the hare was stunned, so he didn't know it was there.

Cottontails like the burrows of packrats and prairie dogs. They will dig a small pit below a shade plant or artificial shade and face outward away from the center of the plant. In hard times both jack rabbits and cottontails will dig down and eat the roots of grasses.

I just wanna give you and Lennon a BIG THANK YOU! 🐰 Not long ago, Sailormoon's lil baby sister Cleo passed. (At this rate you might recognize me, because of the buns names) She passed on Feb. 24th this year....and quite frankly I still miss her a ton. Sailormoon and I have bonded greatly since then due to her loneliness from the loss of Cleo. ♥️ But I still had school through March-May, so I adopted her a new friend, Jupiter. Ive only had him for three days, but gosh, I love him to death! (Despite peeing on my fresh bed sheets, lmao) he's a New Zealand White bun bun. Thank you once again. Without your channel, I would've never given Cleo the comfort of indoor life, or have adopted instead of shopped. Ly so much girl! Keep being creative and caring, as your inspiration has no limits!!! 🐇🍌💖

@@lilliemoonblast5333 maturity isn't always defined by age, caring for any pet is a big responsibility, because they living and breathing creatures and Bunnies surely need a unique care, thanks to Lorelei and Lennon we have a good source of education and we can trust her guidance, I don't own a bunny, but I tried her methods for barely a month when my aunt gave me one (she was breeding them, like the old fashioned folks) so i gave her the best I could for my ability, it breaks my heart that my father demanded that I return her to my auntie, especially when I started having a bond with her, she was clearly comfortable with me only whenever I placed her on my lap, for an hour, giving her rubs, and kisses, but it was quite the experience, so I'll get a bunny in the future once I'm settled.

They also have mutton for dirt cheap this time of year. 20 years ago I discovered that mutton chops are dirt cheap in late June and early July. I have eaten mutton on the 4th of July twelve of the last twenty years.

I love them both! I have a house rabbit (fully free roamed 24/7 of course, thanks to your helpful videos) and he's a lovely little ball of bunstruction - wouldn't trade him in for anything😂 I do love the ridiculously long legs of the hares though- I get the giggles every time I see them! Plus they have such goofy faces - probably because of the set of their eyes. I could not imagine trying to have one as a pet. I remember seeing a video of one doing a 15 foot vertical leap - can't imagine that would be any good for the ceiling fans😂

Thanks really interesting. I love Rabbits. My colleague was a little offended when I complimented her Rabbit necklace. “It’s a Hare”. I think Hares are taken more seriously than Rabbits lol but definitely bunnies are my favourite. Still, Hares are in decline here in the UK which saddens me they’re beautiful creatures.

Hi! I’m 13 and I have a Holland lopped rabbit. His name is clover, and he is turning 2 this month and my parents want to keep him in a “hutch outside” but I despise hutches and I’ve told them that there is indeed a difference between domestic rabbits and wild rabbits. He stays in my room with a litter box, plenty of water, unlimited hay, and good enrichment. But my parents say “he will be happier in a hutch outside with the fresh air” but that’s not true at all because summers get hot and winters get cold where I live, and not to mention there are lots of predators. I really need help on what to say to convince them that I will get an air purifier, and bunny proof my room so he will chew no more chords. I love your channel and Lennon is so sweet 🥰 I really hope you can help me because you are my last hope!!!!

I might have a bit of advice... I'll tell you what I can, as I suffered the same issue when I was 11. (I am now 14) It took me forever to convince my mom, but I finally did it, and hopefully you can, too. Tell your parents that you are at a responsible and reasonable age to handle the matenince of a bunny. Keep telling them you'll bunny proof, and second off, tell them that rabbits are social creatures that need love and a solid, affectionate relationship with the owner, and can't fend off predators or parasites too well on its own outside. (Bless Clover's little heart, my god) weather conditions can cause heat strokes, hypothermia, nausea, frostbite, etc. Ticks and fleas are in season right now as well, so Clover has a risk of getting a sickness for that too. Clover will feel safer and more confident if he continues to live indoors, not to mention, he won't be lonely and can establish an even stronger relationship with you. And if your parents don't take this then I'm sorry, I did what I could!!! (Good luck to you and lil baby Clover, I'm rooting for you!!! You can do it!!! ❤)

I believe that somewhere deep in my mind, my little rabbit is a pseudo hare. Hares were important to the ancient Celts, and it would seem the eyedropper of Celt in me retains genetic memory of sacred Hares, just as it does for the tangled wildwoods and natural springs. lol.
