This song is based on a true story. Lenny was staying with Rick Rubin at his Hollywood home to work on a project at the same time Johnny was in town recording Unchained with Rubin. Johnny and June Carter were there at Rubin's house when Lenny got the call that his mom (Roxie Roker) had died. Despite not knowing him, as Lenny recounted, "The two of them just came up to me and surrounded me and held me."

(From a 2018 interview with Rolling Stone magazine referring to the time when Lenny's mother died in 1995) "The only people who were around me when my mother died were Johnny Cash and June Carter because we were all living at Rick Rubin’s house at the time. I had lived with Rick for years; that was my home in Los Angeles. Johnny was there making an album, and my mother was in the hospital. I’d just gotten home from a tour in Japan and went back to the hospital. I went back to Rick’s to take a shower and get some food. In the time that I drove from the hospital to the house, she slipped away; I got to the house and got the phone call that she had died. I was at the bottom of the stairs and I was in shock. I was trying to take it in. and Johnny and June were walking down the stars. Johnny saw me and was like, “What’s up? What’s wrong?” I said, “My mother just died.” The two of them came downstairs and just grabbed me, held me, consoled me. They were just being really beautiful and supportive in helping me get through that moment. But the song is not about my mother dying, nor is it about Johnny Cash. It’s about a breakup that I was going through. I was saying how I needed their comfort and the thing that came out was, “Hold me like Johnny Cash when I lost my mother. Whisper in my ear just like June Carter.” So it’s saying I needed comfort that was powerful. That was the last time I was comforted in that way, when Johnny Cash and June Carter held me."

He was coming back home from the hospital and got the news of her mom's passing. He was staying with/living in the house of some producer. Johnny Cash was recording his last album and staying in the same house. They dumped into each other in the hallway and Johnny asked how he was doing and he told him his mom just passed. June and Johnny grabbed him and consoled him, even though they didn't really know him (just by passing). PS: He told the story in several interviews.

I recently purchased Raising Vibration and as I do with any album, I listen once all the way through and then nibble on, digest and absorb one song at a time over the course of a few days. It's just the proofreader and reviewer in me but I digress... During my drive home yesterday, I literally had to pull over while listening to Johnny Cash. By the time the ending came around, I was vibrating so hard from head to toe from all the energy of the words and the emotion woven through it. The ending literally had me dizzy from the rawness of pure power. My connection personally to the characters in this song is my mother ADORED the love story of Johnny and June. She passed away from ALS on May 14th 2003. The next day, I heard in the news that June had passed away. I remember my heart filling and spilling over with such deep love because I KNEW my Momma, one of Heaven's newest residents saw June coming through those Gates. I always have taken great comfort in the thought that she would embrace her. I felt very led by Spirit to share this and express my gratitude for the healing that came through to me while listening to your precious song, Love. Thank you. 🙏
