Today Jay Leno and Donald Osborne talk "Classics" at a Newport classic, Clarendon Court. Driving a classic 1936 Packard Phaeton to arrive at the home designed by famed architect of the Gilded Age, Horace Trumbauer. A home that marries Neo-Classical architecture, stunning landscapes and views, and even scandal? What other "controversy" will be stirred up as Donald and Jay discuss and drive possibly the "first supercar" the 1955 Mercedes Gullwing.

You went to my favorite house in Newport! I remember meeting Claus, Sunny and her step-father Russell Aitken at the Newport Country Club in the late 70s. Russell always drove a pristine Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost Series III convertible. Black on black with a red interior. It was stunning, and always pristine.

Probably the best episode yet. All very nice cars... the 100-4 is my favorite Austin-Healey. Donald is right on about electrifying classic cars. Sometimes it works, Jag MK V, Citroen DS, maybe the Cadilac. But not in a 911, or a big Healey, or a Gullwing for sure.

Very interesting car choices. I appreciate the Packard and positively drool over the 300SL. A shame that the Healy 100 wasn't driven. British open two seaters have always been among my favorites. MGs and Triumphs being what I could afford but always dreaming of Jaguars and Healys.

I worked on several of the private estates in Newport during the 1980s. During that time the front gates of Clarendon Court were covered to prevent prying eyes from observing Von Bulow and his daughter Cosima. When I left Newport in 1990 the gates were still covered.

13:19 "Sunday Driver"... I remember going on Sunday drives with my grandparents and they were great, just like Jay describes. The term was also somewhat of a pejorative and was used to describe someone driving much too slowly for traffic conditions and seeming just "gawking" about and not paying attention.🤣

Another wonderful episode, as usual, but special in its own way. The Packard was stunning. No need to say more. The 100-4 is my favorite Austin-Healey. The lines on that car are just beautiful, especially with the windshield down. I would have loved for you guys to have taken it out for a spin, but the sound man would have had nightmares trying to record your voices over the wind noise, so, understood. The 300 SL speaks for itself. Enough praise has been heaped on it already, but not without cause. Donald, popping the windows out and opening the vent windows might be enough to keep you cool on a mid-spring day in Rhode Island, but come down here and try that in Texas. No way would you say the ventilation is "adequate" in the 300 SL. :)

I hate tourists season in Newport ( Newport born and raised)... my daily commute is less than 5 min. to the Breakers stables. If I take the drive ( ocean ave.) in my Camaro or on my motorcycle it may triple my commute but there are no tourists and it makes the day so much better. We have to enjoy the beautiful place we live.

The 300 SL is one of my favorite cars, I was fortunate enough to drive a 190 for almost a year and it handled like a dream and was only half the car that the 300 was. Some of my other iconic choices are the Jaguar XK-E, the 64 Corvette, Sunbeam Tiger and I always had a weakness for the 69 Chevelle SS

Don’t lament the fact that we don’t get excited to drive a half hour to get ice cream, lament the fact we did celebrate that. We have it so well, I wouldn’t want to go back to that era. We don’t have to go back, we have the positive leftovers like the cars and homes but we don’t need the suffering that went with it.

I love how Osborne was making a big fuss about how much effort he put into his getup…then while they’re driving around in the Gullwing you see that Leno is wearing a shirt he probably got for free from Ford’s Bronco launch-no matter it is a Filson shirt (meaning it probably cost in the neighborhood of $200).

After getting to know a little of what I believe Donald Osborne seems to be like and his type of humour and how he loves to get one on Jay when he can I tend to think that Perhaps he chose the Healey 100 for the episode because he knew Jay gave the one he got when he bought one of his Jag's thrown in on the deal but Jay thought so little of it that he gave to one of his Mechanic friends. Now regretting the decision. LOL. So I tend to think Don wanted to rub it in a little on Jay. But I could be very wrong too.
