The crazy thing is, the old RAM was running 3200mhz (dynamic). The speeds varied widely.... And CPU-Z showed a JDEC entry of 3200mhz. I didn't know JDEC went up to 3200mhz. I've got a screenshot I can share on Twitter showing the JDEC 3200mhz (1600 JDEC). Maybe it's some custom deviation? It confused me. I've always thought RAM capacity was more important than RAM speeds, so I was ok with the speed hit. And the fact that I was shipped a 32GB stick, instead of the 8GB stick I paid for, is crazy too.. The spec sheet for this laptop was wrong on RAM speeds as well. Odd.

BTW, I really appreciate you supporting the channel. It does mean a lot to me. You've been here since I started uploading content, and I just wanted to say thanks. I'm going to rotate the content, so my next video will either be 4k 30fps quality test between two "cameras", and/or, we're going to tackle that "per core" overclocking issue people have been having with the MSI BIOS, and the clocks not holding. I have a capture card now, so I'll be able to get better quality footage of the BIOS. I'm gonna figure that out.

Hey thanks. I'd never heard of anyone puttin' in sooo much RAM. Like you imply 8 gigs should be enough of an upgrade for most of us, no? Do you have any unpleasant side effects with 32 extra? Also, I thought the main benefit of puttin' in a 500 gig SSD would be 'memory space'. Speed also improves? How much of a speed improvement have you noticed, and are you still noticin' it? I'd never seen anyone use True Image before, so that was real helpful. I don't know if I'll upgrade the SSD, but it doesn't look hard. It'd be even easier with a little more step-by-step instruction with the clone. I guess that's out there somewheres on KZbin, no? Thanks agin. (My ol' laptop has lost its g ability, unless I control V it, which makes my text kinda folksy, with lotsa droppin' g's.).

So you mean you have 36 GB RAM installed ! , i will do the same ! but one question , is 2666mhz ok or will it accept higher than that ? I have same laptop but with i5-1035G1 (Quad-Core). And also my NVMe doesn't have that Blue-sticker protection, will it be dangerous as it could get heat by Fan. And what screws are used for that SSD ?
@TheSmileyTek
@TheSmileyTek 4 жыл бұрын
Yes 🤣. Kind of crazy tbh. My beastly gaming pc only has 32. I'd suggest downloading CPU-z and/or HWiNFO to confirm your ram speed. Take the number it shows and times it by 2. For example: CPU-z shows 1200mhz, ram is running 2400mhz, 1333mhz is 2666mhz, and so on. Match that speed, if you're buying a new stick imho. For the NVMe, I'd suggest buying a cheap thermal pad material just in case and cutting it to fit, but it'll be fine without it. Although, there may be a little toasty spot if you sit the laptop on your lap. They get pretty warm. You'll know it's there if you run your hand across the bottom while under drive load.
@TheSmileyTek
@TheSmileyTek 4 жыл бұрын
Ah, the screw. The NVMe drive had a screw already installed. I just moved the standoff that was included in the laptop, back to a different hole for the larger drive. Most NVMe mount screws have been the same size in my builds, but the standoff screw has been different. If you already have an NVMe installed, you will have the screw you need.

@TheSmileyTek
@TheSmileyTek 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks man! Wish I had time to get back to making videos. Soon, soon. 8GB dual channel. The soldered RAM capacity determines the limit to dual channel. So my ridiculous 32GB RAM stick is only dual for 4GB of the 32GB. The lowest ram "module's" capacity dictates 8GB dual channel, using "Intel Flex Mode" which runs dual when possible if mixmatched RAM "module" capacities are installed.

Good question. Based on the Intel Ark website for the intel i3 1005G1 cpu, which runs on the intel 400 series chipset, it can support up to 64GB. However the IdeaPad 3 laptop with the i3 1005G1, shown in the video, has 4GB of memory soldered to the motherboard. This limits dual channel to 8GB, but it will support capacities beyond that. My laptop is still running flawlessly with 36GB. I've had zero issues, and zero errors under normal use, and memtest64 stress tests. Hope this helps. Here's the Ark link. ark.intel.com/content/www/us/en/ark/products/196588/intel-core-i3-1005g1-processor-4m-cache-up-to-3-40-ghz.html

And yes, 36GB RAM now, and it works perfectly fine. Seems to be the CPU that determines how much RAM is supported. Just look up your chip to be sure. would all of these upgrade help improve the gaming experience for this laptop?
@TheSmileyTek
@TheSmileyTek 4 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately, I wouldn't think so. It really comes down to core count and the graphics capability. Most newer games are optimized for a minimum of 4 cores, and a discreet GPU to pump out that fps. However, if you upgrade the 256GB hard drive to a snappier 1TB, the read/writes will be faster. If you have a desktop pc that games well, you can always use GeForce Now or Steam Link to game remotely on your laptop. Those services allow you to use your more "powerful" PC's resources to game on your laptop. I've tried Steam Link, and it works pretty well. I've been playing Witcher 3 on this laptop with no issues other than a little latency. Hope this helps you make a decision.

Sure. Yes, I read the spec sheet, and ordered one 8GB RAM stick. I didn't even noticed I received a 32GB stick until after the install. It shows 36GB now, and passess all Mem Tests I ran on it. It's loaded all 36GB of RAM and held with no errors. So far it's been running perfect with no issues. I'm surprised tbh.

(fair warning I'm new to learning about laptop upgrades) Hey I just ordered this laptop and I will be using it to edit photos and video. Would these upgrades help speed things up when launching and using those applications? Thanks in advance!
@TheSmileyTek
@TheSmileyTek 4 жыл бұрын
Sure, no worries. The nature of NVMe ssd, the higher capacity usually translates to faster "read/write". I think there would be a boost in performance with a higher end, high capacity NVMe (1TB and up, but 500GB is still super fast). As far as the memory upgrade. My upgrade did not benefit memory speed, but you will want more memory for video editing, so you can smoothly "scrub" in the timeline. Rendering videos may not be that fast without a true discreet graphics card, but It's a great little laptop. I think bumping up drive capacity and RAM, would benefit your use case for sure. Would probably give you a smoother experience rather than a faster laptop. Hope that helps. Have a great day!

Unfortunately there is no option to upgrade the graphical performance. The model I have has integrated graphics (iGPU), so it is what it is. Most laptops don't really have many upgrade paths, other than drive capacity, and memory. When buying a laptop they are sort of frozen in time in terms of capability. Most that is. There are some that have options to upgrade a discreet gpu. But, the model in the video isn't one. They are usually more pricey. The only real option is to use Steam Link if you have a PC that can run games well, it let's you use that PC remotely. I've tested it out on this laptop. Works pretty well for single player campaign type games.

The more research I've done seems to point towards no. Although, the spec sheet shows a larger capacity battery avaliable, it looks like a different form factor. In other words, it looks like the larger option is a different shape, and wouldn't fit some of the model chassis. I'll let you know if I find different info, but in the meantime you can lower the power draw by changing your power management options. It will run slower, but it will help the battery last longer when not plugged in.

Not sure if I lost dual channel, but yes, some speed was lost (Only getting 2400mhz with the 32 vs 2666mhz with the 4). No XMP options in the BIOS to get 2666 with the 32, of course. CPU-Z reads "dual rank" with both the 4GB or the 32GB installed, but I can't match the speeds of the 4GB. I haven't messed with it too much. It's my wife's laptop. There is a 12GB model; 8GB sodimm + 4GB soldered. I don't think the capacity differences would dictate dual vs single in that case. However, I wouldn't install mismatched capacities in my desktop. Probably best to purchase from Lenovo to ensure the best possible compatibility.

Everything seems as is was before the upgrade, except for speeds and amount of RAM. The system recognizes both modules, and shows "Dual" in CPU-Z, and "2of2" in task manager. Memory clocks were 3200Mhz before, but are now 2400Mhz unfortunately. This laptop doesn't support the 2666Mhz XMP profile. I wasn't aware of JDEC 3200, and I didn't even look until the day I upgraded, but somehow it was running those speeds. I took screenshots of the hardware info and benchmarks before the upgrade. I can make a video comparing the before and after results if you'd like. It now has 36GB RAM, which I've tested with MemTest32 & MemTest64. Runs perfect, with no issues other than the dropped clocks. Kingston Hyper-X. Way over priced right now. It's 5x what I paid. Although, I paid for an 8GB and received 32GB an error. www.amazon.com/dp/B0848MD5Q6/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_glt_fabc_35ZHB03QAESWWYGYYC8M?psc=1

Please help me. I have Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 3 15iil05, 8gb ram (1), i31005g1 and the trash uhd G1 graphics. I want to add a GPU, can I? External GPU or add a GPU inside the hardware. Is it possible? Please tell me if there's any way to do it.
@TheSmileyTek

I don't think it's possible since it's an integrated GPU and there are no thunderbolt 3 ports for an external gpu option.

Gotcha. If you're running off of a mechanical drive, an ssd upgrade will improve performance. The memory will allow you to run more "things" at the same time, but won't necessarily boost gaming performance. Hope it all works out for you.

I ordered an 8GB stick to upgrade to 12GB total. I was literally sent a 32GB stick... 🤣. I did mention it to the vendor (rhymes with shamazon), and they said just keep it. I paid about $40. The 32GB was around $145 at the time. That's crazy. I think I mention that.

@@giannenicolemiranda4169 I use Steam Link to game on this laptop. Steam Link lets you use your "gaming PC" resources to play on another PC, remotely. Works good enough for campaigns, but the latency wouldn't help in a multiplayer game. I'd suggest a laptop with a dedicated GPU for gaming. This one has an integrated GPU, and isn't that great at pushing graphics. But, it's excellent for everything else, so far.

Hello Michael, I own the Lenovo IdeaPad 3 15IIL05 CORE i3. I was told by Lenovo Tech Support that you can only up-grade the ram to 12GB. But when I go to search Crucial only shows the following: 16GB DDR4-3200 SODIMM. This would give the 15IIL50 a total of 20GB. What is your thought? Thanks!
@TheSmileyTek
@TheSmileyTek 3 жыл бұрын
🤔 I'd take Lenovo's word for it. My laptop has ran perfect with 36GB, but it's not very practical. 12 or 20GB would work just fine from my experience.

does this upgrade will improve the gaming performance such as reducing lag?
@TheSmileyTek
@TheSmileyTek 4 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't think it would. I'd assume that the cpu core count and the integrated gpu may be the issue with lags while gaming. It's best to have a dedicated graphics card and 4 to 6 cpu cores for better gaming.

@TheSmileyTek
@TheSmileyTek 4 жыл бұрын
35Wh (7.3 hours) & 45Wh (9.6 hours) are the only two battery options available for this model. Mine is the 35Wh. If you turn up power saver mode, the cpu will run @ the slower 1.2Ghz. If you turn down the brightness you might get the max hours. I haven't used it without it being plugged in, so I'm not sure of the "actual" time you'd get out of it. No judgment here, that translator works well. Very clever.
