Pro tip for those who are new to Lenovo laptops! If your laptop is plugged in most of the time, Lenovo has a function in their Vantage software called "Conservation Mode", which helps limit the battery charge to 60% when you're plugged in. This helps preserve your battery's health. My Legion 5 is now 3 months old and only has gone through 15 charge cycles!

Just a note to people upgrading brand new Legion 5s. the newer ones (like the one I purchased) have different motherboards installed meaning a 2.5inch SSD or HDD can't be installed into it, an M.2 SSD can still be installed in the same way. Another thing to watch out for is the RAM, the motherboard in the newer ones isn't XMP based meaning XMP ram (what's commonly sold) won't work at full speed.

You might be able to use the M.2 drive as well as a 2.5 inch SATA SSD at the same time if you take apart the 2.5 inch SSD by removing it's plastic housing. Inside that there's a high chance you'll have a small circuit board which is the SSD. As an owner of this machine, I feel like some important topics were missed here. Upgrading RAM isn't just about capacity. Sometimes it is about performance. What will this machine do with tighter timings? What are the actual limits it will accept? Is there a 3400MT/s or faster kit available that will work? Can the cooling be upgraded? I know in the past, Lenovo has different cooling for different SKUs. I also own the 1660Ti version. Is the 2060 cooling module better? If so, would it be possible to upgrade to the 2060 cooling kit to improve temps? If you can, does that improve performance in any meaningful way?
@CleverCheetah2 жыл бұрын
Make a video or link a source to switching the cooling kits I never heard of that.
@waldojim422 жыл бұрын
@@CleverCheetah I was asking as the "upgrade guide" was missing the upgrades that appeared to be worth doing. It is common practice to have different cooling based upon the build. First I ran into that, was with the W520. Upgrading from a dual core to a quad core included a cooling upgrade. Upgrading from the low end to high end GPU involved a cooling upgrade. And you could purchase, and install that upgraded cooler yourself if you wanted to lower temps on parts that weren't maxed out for the platform. I assumed the same would apply to the Legion 5 - given the upgraded parts available. However, that topic was never approached by the author.

Hmm it looks like 64gb RAM doesn't really add much value over the 16gb RAM.

@@JarrodsTech (edit this is due to the application not being able to use the ram I had properly, I have 32gb of sodimm ddr4, and the *32 bit* application could only use about 4) Take the following with a grain of salt. And if your playing old titles on high settings, I was playing Microsoft Flight Simulator X (2006) and it crashed and gave an error similar to "Memory Exceeded." when I flew over Newark Liberty International.
@AlexRoseGames3 жыл бұрын
Upgrading RAM isn't for higher framerates, it's so when you get a memory leak it doesn't completely crash your computer, and you can run 800 chrome tabs. It's also extremely useful for audio editing as you can run a lot of VSTs simultaneously, on 16GB you would get an instant crash on a complicated track. Also, let's say you build a program that's large like a video game, you may need more than 16GB just to build. Or if you want to rewrite a large Git history. Or if you're a scientist and you want to analyse a large dataset. I got 64GB last feb and since then my computer has never stalled and I am constantly running unity, photoshop, fl studio, resolve, bitbucket, rider, 100 tabs in firefox, thunderbird, filezilla, google sync, playstation and xbox devkit tools. Often streaming on slobs, have excel open in the background, a bunch of copies of ms paint with screenshots open, everything, my music editor, my vpn, steam, avast, parsec. I have never gone above 40GB even during memory leaks. I used to max 24GB all the time.

If you know what you're doing, I strongly recommend changing stock thermal paste for liqud metal (Thermal Grizzly Conductonaut in my case) Temperatures dropped from 98C° to ~75C° on CPU in full load, which is a nice improvement for longevity and performance of your HW.
@JOhnDoe-nl4wj3 жыл бұрын
utterly retarded idea. Liquid metal is a compound which includes galium. it is meant to seal die and shielding. it is not meant to go on the shielding as it will corrode the metal (gallium!). surefire way to kill your hardware. "improvement for longevity" my ass.

The 64gb RAM upgrade might not show much improvement in specific applications, but it will be useful for people managing workloads that require it, like virtual machines and docker along with other machine learning tasks. So its good that this laptop supports 64gb RAM.

PCIe 3. It will accept PCIe 4 though it will run at PCIe 3 speeds. Though you will be able to upgrade to 4tb single sided PCIe 4. You're limited to a maximum of 2 tb single sided with PCIe 3. Your Lenovo videos are always first rate. That said, I am a lifelong ThinkPad user and whenever I see what Lenovo has been selling since the overpriced but cheaply made T440 I wonder if we shall ever see true quality again. Obviously key components have become more powerful but the loss of so many ports, dumping of optical and penny pinching on SD bandwidth (where SDs are even fitted) has shown Lenovo's current management to be trading on a once great and distinctive pedigree. Actual machines are in fact little better than things costing 50% less. Dell also had a bad quality patch but seemed to learn from crashing sales. HP are mostly bad with the occasional machines being at Elitebook and Probook standards of a dozen years ago. Many of us in the area of education IT are going back to Clevo base models honed and finished by specialist companies and having so-called 'gaming computers' modified to serve our middle term needs. We also note that some ASUS models a few years old are more accessible and upgradeable than the Big Three. We think it possible that Framework and firms like it could herald the future because many models yet too narrow a range is the reality of the big three non-Mac companies. Their greed and laziness could sink them rather quickly.
