We have the original version as well and to set auto brightness, it's directly on the clock. Swipe bottom-to-top and you'll see a brightness 'sun' symbol in the bottom left. Tap this and you'll see a slider for adjusting brightness between 1-10. What you need to do for auto brightness adjustment is simply tap the sun symbol again so it shows an 'A' within it and says "Automatic brightness on/off" on the device's screen.

plus if you get the original, It has a USB A built into it, to get that feature with the new one you need the optional wireless base. so here in Australia it's $99 for just smart clock 2 or $129 packaged with wireless base and orginal is $70. If the usb a was built in to the 2nd gen, then for $99 I'd say - fair deal. But I don't need a wireless charger, I have a multicoil 15a one that I prefer. They nearly had me, but I really don't even need the speaker upgrade as it only used for alarm tones and google feedback and low volume radio as I wake up. The original is such a good thing and purposesly restricted (I like that). I won't be upgrading, but if you have nothing smart next to you, the whole setup to get you a smart clock and wireless charging next to your bed to clean up all the wire and old clock - then for $130 it's awesome and while a 7" google home is only $99 here. It's the small foot print and deliberate restriction of capabilities that make the smart clock a better pick for next to the bed.

I wonder if there's any difference at all except a wireless charging add on that you can just buy a loose and better one anyway. I got the Xiaomi Smart Clock since it was roumored to have video casting ability. Well - surprise! - it does not. Some apps allow you to cast the audio but no video - hey those apps allow you to cast the audio part to a Home Mini too! So really the Xiaomi Smart Clock and the Lenovo Smart Clock are for all practical purposes 100% identical except the Lenovo has a USB port for charging your phone - or connect to a third party Qi charger so you don't have to buy the new one! It's clearly the same software without any other modifications than boot up logo and they report statistics to Lenovo and Xiaomi respectively. Huge disappointment. May buy the Smart Clock 2 if it finally gets video streaming and the other don't Would be perfect for a small screen to cast TV to when working in the home office by your computer. The Nest Hub is just a tad too large for that.
