@@eudymaverickmentor Sorry, but I agree with Lisa. Why? Because on several occasions, I bought tickets to his shows and I was amazed at just how close to the stage I could get. This guy would play in bars with a seating capacities of 1,000 and oddly enough, tickets would be easy to obtain. I remember seeing him at the Medina, MN Ballroom on 03/14/02. Sat about 8 rows back. When he came back after intermission, half of the audience had left so I took a seat in the front row directly in front of him, no less than 15 feet away. While I may have appreciated him, many others didn't. With his talent, Leon should have been selling out stadiums.

Quite simply, Leon Russell is a musical genius. Love it when Leon tells the story of how Gram Parsons gave Leon the top hat Al Jolson wore in The Jazz Singer and gave him this song (Wild Horses) to sing. This is a fantastic arrangement/version of the song and no one can top how Leon plays piano and Sam Bush plays the mandolin.

Gram couldn’t give the song to Leon. It wasn’t his to start with. It belongs to the songwriters Mick Jagger and Keith Richards. Gram had nothing to do with Wild Horses.
@kevinbfisher
@kevinbfisher 6 жыл бұрын
My comment is not about who wrote or "owned" the song Wild Horses; it is about how Leon first became aware of the song. Leon often told the story about how, just before leaving for the first show of the Mad Dogs traveling circus, he got a call from Gram Parsons saying that he loved Leon's music & wanted to meet him. As Leon explained, at that meeting, Gram gave Leon Al Jolson's top hat & the song Wild Horses as a song that he thought Leon should perform.
@chlynn13b92
@chlynn13b92 6 жыл бұрын
I don't think that is exactly what Leon saId. First of all, he knew Gram before Mad Dogs ever was even thought of. He played piano on this song on a Flying Burrito Brother's album. Gram did say he thought Leon should do this song

Tomorrow, 6/14/16, marks the forty-sixth anniversary of Leon's first performance as a solo act. He was backed by the Shelter People. I first saw the MOSAT live a few months later. He came on stage alone in white bell-bottoms, a red turtle neck and a blue blazer. He sat at a grand piano and played this song solo. He then stood, took off his blazer, folded it neatly and placed it on the piano bench, strapped on his guitar and announced "Now it's time for the rock and roll part of the show!" The band bounded on stage, plugged in and rocked the house. I have experienced many great live concert moments but none better.

Leon Russell, thank you for all the great, wonderful memories that your music and singing brings. Your voice still gives me chills. Will never forget the last time I saw you perform in Texas on the island. God bless you.
