I am a huge fan of Leonard Cohen, and one day, I was at a music festival where Paul K played this as the opening of his set. I was socked to recognise the song, such a great moment, I was so happy to hear this song in such a place. For me, this remix is amazing and really respectful to LC original track.

As someone who has been a fan of Leonard Cohen for 30 years and had the pleasure of fulfilling a dream to see him live in one of his last shows, this song is not blasphemy or wrong. It is reworking a master to bring a new feel to the work and attract a new audience to the original. It's not better, but very interesting all the same. Think about all the different takes on Shakespeare.
@anthonyherniman6332 Жыл бұрын
The comparison with Shakepeare is a bullseye. Keep the intent of the play/song, its heart, its core and build around that, tweak, lift and shift and love it... There are so many crystal clear novel ways of interpreting Shakespeare's gift and this does a similar justice to an incredible origin. I can't imagine much better than this version but your angle of this being interesting shows how music can move from one style to another, bring in one audience then another, keep the heartbeat alive. Just lkike Shakespeare. What a great comparison.

Hehe, this pretend character Leonard Cohan has nothing on William Shakespeare. Get a grip ffs.
@entropy89937 жыл бұрын
Kalkbrenner doesn't destroy the original, as he has no such desire. He just pays tribute to the legend Cohen, by showing love and respect to his artistry. He doesn't try to be better than him, to create a better version. He just took a piece he loves and respects and re-imagines it. This is called 'homage'. Personally, I like both versions equally, for different reasons, their uniquely beautiful, each with its own way. P.S. R.I.P. Cohen... you are truly missed.

I was ready to put a thumb down. Your comment stopped me. It's true in fact, that this song is a tribute. Who I am to judge a fan work ? I don't like this version because I found it a bit lazy. Instead the tribute deserves a thank. Greets to you to make me clever.

I have every idea about music. I've been in the business for 50 years, won 8 Grammys and sold 120 million records. The song is a masterpiece by a master. It's about aging and mortality -- serious subjects -- so a mindless, abrasive club mix that any 16-year-old could do in his bedroom is not a great accomplishment and it is not appropriate for a song of this gravity. Grow up.

You're missing the point John. This is more like all the high praised, modern interpretations of Shakespeares work. It's not the same, it doesn't pretend to be, but it pays its respect to the original. Also, like a lot of electronic music, which is known for combining influences from all over the musical universe, it makes people interested in the original. And I'm having a hard time respecting your opinion, when you're calling us 'ignorant distracted masses'. Who are you to tell me what I am? Most people I know who listen electro/techno (like Kalkbrenner makes) are highly educated, widely interested and most of all lovers of all kinds of music. Some of these musicians are even composing with world famous orchestras (Jeff Mills in Amsterdam).. I could send/show you some examples of good electronic music if you like?

I’m down the middle about this remix. But I just stumbled on this quote from Mr. Cohen himself in an interview cited on “Brainpickings”: "Echoing young Sylvia Plath’s assertion that 'once a poem is made available to the public, the right of interpretation belongs to the reader,' Cohen casts a benevolent eye upon the large and loving body of covers of his songs: 'I’m always pleased when somebody sings a song of mine. In fact, I never get over that initial rush of happiness when someone says they are going to sing a song of mine. I always like it. […] That song enters the world and it gets changed, like everything else - that’s OK as long as there are more authentic versions. But a good song, I think, will get changed.’" He is referring to covers, but I think a remix counts as well. There can be arguments made whether this is “more authentic” or not, of course (see the flame war here in the comments). But either way, it looks like Mr. Cohen gave us the last word on this in advance, doesn’t it?
