I always prefer live stripped down acoustic, it resonates like nothing else can. Leon brings me to a different time on this earth and not many musicians do that to me. His soul is in every word, note 🎷🎶🎙 he is HOPE for us all 💜

Hoping for a life more sweeter Instead I'm just a story repeating Why do I fear with skin dark as night? Can't feel peace with those judging eyes I thought we moved on from the darker days Did the words of the King disappear in the air Like a butterfly? Somebody should hand you a felony 'Cause you stole from me My chance to be Hoping for a life more sweeter Instead I'm just a story repeating Why do I fear with skin dark as night? Can't feel peace with those judging eyes The tears of my Mother rain, rain over me My sisters and my brothers sing, sing over me And I wish I had another day But it's just another day Hoping for a life more sweeter Instead I'm just a story repeating Why do I fear with skin dark as night? Can't feel peace with those judging eyes Hoping for a life more sweeter

Leon, you captivated my heart when I first heard/saw you at Roots n Blues in Columbia, MO in 2017. This stripped-down version of Sweeter is my favorite. It’s pure, raw emotion and tells the story of the struggle of your people from when the first boatload of your ancestors landed on these shores in 1619. It both breaks my heart and makes me cry, but as a 67 year old white woman who lived in the 60’s during the Civil Rights era, your lyrics and melodic voice inspire me to do more in examining myself, and speaking out against racism wherever I see it. I love the dark as night skin of your people, and I know that your people & people of all colors seek the same things: to love & be loved, to have opportunities to follow whatever paths we choose; to feel valued as individuals and respected for our humanity; to go about our daily lives with no fear, without judging eyes upon us. I am so so sorry for society’s purposeful wrongs done to your people, and also wrongs committed out of plain ignorance. Let justice and freedom ring for us all. Your music is like a healing balm. Thank you!

When I listen to this beautiful piece of poetry I envision a man singing his song of regret from beyond the grave. “Hoping for a life more sweeter but right now I’m just a story repeating” I interpret that as hoping that the afterlife is better than this one and how he’s just another human who’s taken his own life. “My sisters and my brothers sing over me” his family sing over his coffin at the funeral and his mother’s cries over it. “Thought I had moved on from the darker days but the words of the long disappear in the air like a butterfly” he found god for a period of time but as his depression crept back in the words of god that gave his strength “disappears i the air like a butterfly”

I'm just lucky to have run across Leon Bridges in 2020. The dude is just a breath of fresh air (I was about to type "fresh air to R&B/Soul music", but I gotta refrain from even trying to put this brother in any music genre, would be too confining. Have you seen it's video "Beyond"? So warm and pleasant kzbin.info/www/bejne/e32zgHaAq6mtadk
