The French of the past were actually pretty badass and were extremely competent militarily. I mean, they almost conquered all of Europe with Napoleon. Solidus was created separately with an advanced aging compared to Solid or Liquid, with specific machinations for his role in the grand scheme of things to become the Patriots' star pawn. If the MGR surreal trailer videos are canon and anything to go by, he was already the age of a man when he had Jack subjected to horrible things to make him a better killer on the battlefield in 1989, which is why Jack/Raiden is a young man by the time of 2009 for MGS2. Two decades later and a stint as President of the United States during MGS1, and Solidus is an old man in an exoskeleton, who probably shouldn't be doing what he does but doesn't let it really phase him off of sheer willpower. Sound similar to Old Snake on that last part? The only part that really confuses me is that Solidus seems younger than he should for his point in the series compared to Old Snake literally being a grandpa with six months to live despite a slower 'aging time' and MGS4 being only five years story-wise (2014) after MGS2.

Due to compatibility issues between their natural DNA and the processed DNA, they started to suffer from complications and the media decided to censor this by saying that they were instead due to exposure to depleted uranium, AKA "Gulf War Syndrome". Liquid's ransom being Big Boss's body was due to his belief that studying the rest of Big Boss's DNA would allow them to find a way to use it for gene therapy and reverse these effects.
