I used a phos remover from Leslie's (Clear, or something to that effect) and it quickly put a stop to the chalky build up I've been fighting for years. My previous pool company refused to help me with this issue, and as it turns out, they killed my salt cell, and just started shocking it constantly and leaving chlor tabs in my baskets with no discussion. My filter was horribly dirty too. I was paying them to kill my pool! Never use Borden Pools. Luckily I found a new and excellent pool service company. I still do a close watch and maintain my water quality between services, but they have made all the difference. Oh, and Leslie's Pool Care. LOVE them. Great products, amazing service.

A phosphate does NOT "contaminate or pollute" your pool water. In fact, orthophosphate, which is the type that you're even testing for on a phosphate test kit, is already broken down to its most oxidized level. It CANNOT combine with a chlorine molecule. Lanthanum chloride, the main ingredient in phosphate removers, does a great job removing OTHER contaminants that can tie up your chlorine. The phosphate is irrelevant. As far as a food source for algae, yes, it's just one of the nutrients algae needs along with sunlight, oxygen, carbon, etc. However, algae can "have its fill" of phosphate and store it in the cell walls.

Cheaper doesn't = better. Check the concentration or dose per 10,000 gal

To all these commentators, if Leslie’s doesn’t know anything does Pentair? Read their start up guide for starting up their salt cells. In addition to having a balanced water chemistry everyone would agree on, the next thing they mention is having all phosphates and nitrates removed. That if this step isn’t done, the phosphates will eat the chlorine almost immediately. That statement is in there for a reason. Unless everyone are proven Chemists or manufacture reps, I’m going with the other.

I am using chlorine at a alarming rate and they say it is too much Phosphates. And they are selling me this stuff called PhosFight by ultimate. The first bottle made just a small change and the lady sold me two more bottles that I just put in and have not checked yet. This junk is expensive.... Had my pool for almost twenty five years and have never had this problem.. What should I do?

I don't see how phosphate can eat chlorine. did you change the brand of chlorine recently? stabilizer will help your chlorine last longer. being 9 months old you probably already fixed this problem

@@johnbee3416 Phosphates doesn't eat chlorine. It's food for algae (organics) and it will grow in low chlorine levels and use up chlorine levels as it tries to oxidize it. SO what's happening is circular: phosphate increases due to nature and regular usage, free chlorine drops too low, algae grows, increase chlorine levels to fight algae, but it's not high enough, phosphate continue to increase, more food for algae, higher chlorine levels kill, but it still too low, algae continues to grow, phosphates continue to feed, we shock and bombard, everything is good, but we need to keep higher free chlorine levels to stay on top of it, and this goes on and on like my run on sentence (yes I did this on purpose). The arguments back and forth between pool people is really all about which approach to tackle that one common enemy: algae. On one corner you have devout BBB people who will use chlorine/bleach to tackle this issue. Bleach, balance, bleach, balance and bleach some more until free chlorine levels are high that algae and organics doesn't stand a chance. Then, on the other corner you have people who want to reset the water balance and use phosphate removers to zero the levels back to normal and fight with bleach from a clean slate. I'm a believer in both. I've done both. Chlorine is the cheapest and the best way the go for the long haul, especially if you have a salt water generator. However, once in a while (I waited over 10 years ha!) wipe the water slate clean. Drain or eliminate the phosphates and help your salt water chlorine generator and free chlorine do their job.

how often would you have to add a phosphate remover to a saltwater pool?

No one where i live can answer this. I got 3 answers. Answers first. 1. Wait 6 hours. 2. You can go in no problem. 3. Wait at least 24 hours. Question I asked. After adding 8oz of phosphate remover to 5000gal. Of water, can we go in the pool?

You can have phosphate levels of 100 katrillion parts per billion and never have a single algae cell if you have sufficient chlorine. Phosphate remover is a waste of money

James Marshall you will need to use less chlorine if the phosphates are kept in check though. A $30 bottle of phos out can save you 1/2 your summer chlorine budget. Tested. Confirmed.

I disagree. It's not just about algae, particularly if you live in an area with super hard water. I've tried both ways, and I need to knock out the phos.

Leslies doesn’t know anything about what they talking about. If you want to be sure, but after a check for a sweet tester and if you find out you have phosphates, buy phos free
