The cooling on dells is too terrible to get performance out of their components
@TheJacobshapiro Жыл бұрын
The lower tier GPUs are the only ones that make sense in the 15”. Above the 4050 or so you’ll see diminishing returns due to the 40W TDP limit. The XPS 17 seems like a decent desktop replacement and has better cooling but unfortunately it’s considerably more expensive because it isn’t facing price pressure because there aren’t many other thin 17” desktop replacement laptops out there.

Indeed. These 12nd and 13th gen intel chips are getting really good, all paired with gen4 SSDs and DDR5 and the ever growing iGPUs in these chips, i feel like there's no need for crazy dedicated hardware for most users, in fact it is more desireable to have something like an efficiency processor variant instead of a high power one in these thin laptops. And im tiping this from a 12700h/RTX Vostro. A XPS with an i7 1360P or an i5 1350P would be enough and more efficient + a 2K display and im done. Im not gonna do 3D cad, renders or game on a thin laptop, i just want it to be efficient and snappy for the day to day stuff. A professioal purchasing a 3800usd laptop under the justification of "professional work" and getting a GPU whose TDP is 50W and an i9 that will throttle in seconds is stupid, trust me, it doesn't work like that.

I have a 7590 too and while I love the strong build quality, the thermals are horrible. I5 base model btw. My battery is in ok condition but needs a replacement but there are no replacements available. The quality of the fans are horrible. If a single hair gets in the fans it'll sound like a boat engine in a few weeks. I've also had quality control issues with an alienware laptop and my dad had a very poor experience with driver issues on an inspiron. Call me unlucky but if I'm going to buy an xps again thermals must be fixed, fans must be durable, needs basic IO not just usb c, and their software such as for controlling charging needs to be reliable. On paper, dell laptops sound perfect at a great price, but having experience with them is either underwhelming or frustrating
@saurabhmisra87 Жыл бұрын
@@jackgowing1256 That's unfortunate. I guess the thermals and battery of my laptop are also not the same as they used to be either, but considering the machine is 4 years old, I'd say they are holding up pretty good. 90% of the time my laptop is connected to an external monitor so its not that much of an issue for me. I have heard that the new XPS I think the 17" one has a vacuum based cooling system or something so that should help. If they can build that in to the 15 inch version that would be ideal.

As an XPS owner i have a few comments. First, at least in the past, buying a brand new 15" XPS ridiculously expensive. However, I have bought 2 refurbished XPS 15s that where both well spec'd for the time and have had good luck. The first needed a screen replacement (send it back just after receipt) that was replaced under warranty. I replaced the cooling fans and keyboard myself around the 5 year mark (it wasn't expensive). The second has not had any issues. Both are still going strong with the first being a 9560 and the second being a 9520. However, once any initial issues are fixed these things have great build quality which for me translates to long usable life. I use my laptops around 8 hours a day so they don't just sit on my desk looking pretty, i use them for work. Thus, buying a refurbished one is worth it to me. Performance wise though you have to accept that you are not getting the highest performance machine. Its just not. But its great for multitasking and general productivity use and holds up well. I have had MACs in the past as well and i think the XPS line and MACs are both in the same class build quality wise.

Blame intel's processor. XPS would have been so much better if they had AMD variants but nope, DELL has this special relationship with intel.
@wrightc23 Жыл бұрын
Biggest problem with the XPS and it's precision cousin is that Dell stick to a pretty rigid 4 year cycle. They just insert the latest CPU/GPU generation with little regard to heat management and throttling. By the end of the cycle you end up with devices that struggle to deliver the performance effectively. Add into that the dated 720P webcam, no wifi 6E and limited display options on a $2.5k premium laptop. Effectively they don't even update the internal components e.g wifi card. If we wanted an XPS 95xx we'd be better off saving a chunk on one of the previous iterations as it wouldn't be that far off. Have they finally fixed the trackpad issues? Still a lovely device to own despite it's age and obvious limitations.
@andyH_England Жыл бұрын
It is industry standard, around a 4-year design cycle. This is because, in a mature market like laptops, it is about survival more than anything else. Spending hundreds of millions on a new design every year or two has little upshot in sales numbers. Even Apple with the revolutionary Apple Silicon can barely break 10% of the market.

This used to be the Windows laptop for creators. That is no longer the case, and Dell is the only one to blame for it. At the 2500 dollar price point there are many different options to think about, but you also need to look at what you get. oled is much better than miniled considering light bleeding. fingers crossed they release a 4k oled @120 Hz next year. although youtube is not supporting this framerate.

I have a 2019 MBP, but the XPS has always caught my eye. If the MacBooks keep rocking that hideous notch. I'll switch over to XPS once software support ends for me.

What other options would you explore? Should I get one of these around the $13-1500 mark or spend a bit more for a 2022 blade 15 advanced? I am a bit concerned about the blades battery though haha

Shame the 4070 card is limited to 50w making it way less powerful than other laptops in the same category. Hoping they get a new cooling design next year so the full performance can actually be used.
@jackgowing1256 Жыл бұрын
Battery life is already limited, I would keep it at 40w even if thermals improved. To me the xps is a productivity laptop and shouldn't be tethered to the wall. I had a 7590 with a 1650 and I just feel that I wouldn't be happy. Maybe on a 17 inch it would be more appropriate since it is less portable
@ei.. Жыл бұрын
@@jackgowing1256 then I'd much rather get the 4060 model. No reason to pay a premium for a card you cant use In laptops with highet tdp, you can always just limit the tdp as well, or turn of the dgpu and use the igpu

How much wattage 4050?
@TaylorBrauer Жыл бұрын
That top spec model at $3800 is honestly very competitive. That seems like a great investment for a professional workflow.
@Smallman647 Жыл бұрын
The problem is that the tdps are very limited, so you don't get so much more performance. Look at the 4070, it's fixed at 50 watts.
@willfullyinformed Жыл бұрын
@@Smallman647 Also runs extremely hot. Some other youtubers joke about cooking on it and that it's really uncomfortable to use. I rather go with the Lenovo Legion series lineups.

You can get the Lenovo Slim Pro 9i 13905H/100 watts 4060 for $1849 and it will destroy the XPS in performance

I'm not the target audience so I'm only looking in. But if you're a real professional then wouldn't you just spend the money on a desktop. I'm assuming that a professional would need a multi monitor setup with high performance. Feels weird that a pro would shell out so much money for sub par product. The only benefit is portability. But I don't know how much a pro is going to push this machine when he/she is offer his/her desk.

@MHWGamer Жыл бұрын
general statement but how are adaptive lpto displays still not a thing on laptops (even Macbooks)?? especially with the battery problem on every windows machine. Who needs a 4k oled on a 15" device when the battery runs out in 6 or less hours real world usage. I want one with good design (the main point I can say about xps in '23), ryzen chips for efficiency and an lpto display with 120hz. 10h of actual battery life while doing while doing normal, light work. I can't justify spending 2k$ on a laptop, so I still use my laptop that I can throw in the backback on monday and have no worries about battery life for the majority of the week
