Is it a good idea to take your RV on the Million Dollar Highway? There are breathtaking mountain, valley, and gorge views between Ouray and Silverton. There are also hairpin turns and steep drop-offs making the drive a real challenge towing a fifth wheel.

As someone who lives here it’s always kinda fun to see how our places look to other people. And while I’ve been up and down the pass so many times that it doesn’t even phase me I 100% agree with you that it’s spectacular and after 27 years here the views still never get old!

Our first trip with our solitude 390rk-r was from Texas to Ouray CO. We took the million dollar highway. That was before I knew my 2018 truck had a different way of engaging the compression brake than my 2005. I thought tow/haul mode would do it, and I thought it was broken. So we did it with just the truck and trailer brakes. Slowing way down, then coasting in a lower gear until I had to brake again. It was scary for my wife, because she was on the edge of the road. We made it. It would be better with the compression brake, but she has assured me... we won't do that again.

Agree, we drove the Million Dollar Highway towing our Airstream in 2016. But try to add major construction with engine shutdowns twice for >20-30 minutes and a huge bike race on the highway at the same time!

Definitely one of the great scenic drives in America !! In 1996, I flew into Denver and rented a convertible to do a south west Colorado tour, Phenomenal !!! Love the Rockies !! Another great one is the Pacific Coast Highway in CA,....If you really want an adrenaline rush, drive the northern section At NIGHT when the moon is full or close to it...Your headlights disappear on the switchbacks when you are looking at the Ocean over the Cliff !!! Really Impressive !! ( Not recommended while Towing Anything ) :)

Back in the early 90’s, me and a buddy of mine took a jeep trail from Silverton to Telluride, which involved a narrow mountain-edge road that went above tree-line. While on the way down into Telluride in my ‘92 Bronco, we encountered a station wagon coming up the other way. I got pretty nervous as I hugged the mountain-side of the road, only to encounter the mother and her kids just casually driving past us in the other direction. The drama kept coming as I failed to stay in low gear enough, which caused the brake lines to vapor-lock. As the brake pedal slowly went to the floor, I carefully costed into a grove of Aspens not too far from the main rod into Telluride. Since we weren’t sure just what happened to the brakes, we hiked down to the road and hitched a ride into town. It turned out that the guy who gave us a lift was film director Olver Stone, who has/had a vacation home near there.

We took it this year pulling a 10 ft cargo trailer. It was raining and snowing at the top. I loved the scenery, it was Beautiful but there was too many on the edge areas for my liking. There was one area where road was undercut and lookedine it was going away. I'm glad we did so I can say we did it so we could see the beauty.....but never again. Oury was SO VERY Busy so no where to stop and park.

Did that drive with a 25’ airstream up from Durango and then back. Both ways I was white knuckled, although coming back was a little better since I knew what I was about to do. We stayed at that Durango RV resort (old KOA) and absolutely love it there. There is nothing better than the sound of the river as your going to sleep. Best fly fishing in Durango.

I knew from the opening you were entering Colorado. When we moved out from Florda in 1999 we landed in Woodland Park, west of Colorado Springs. Sea level to 8500 feet in two weeks while visiting relatives on the way. Took some adjusting until our bodies adapted to the mountains. We would drive from WP to Cripple Creek (9,300 ft.) fairly regularly. Twice on the way that road would. be carved out of cliffs...without guardrails. Nerve wracking at first but after a few trips on a motorcycle I found myself riding with a friend on his bike at 60 mph in pouring rain. Your ability to ignore the "ditches" a few hundred feet deep grows with time.

My Favorite Road in America !!! Especially between Durango and Ouray. What makes the drive even more dangerous is that you can't hardly keep your eyes on the road because of all of the beautiful scenery ! The Line Creek Burn Area turn-out / overlook during late Sept. thru early Oct. Is absolutely amazing. It is just a heavenly tapestry of colors. The view coming in over either Silverton or Ouray is breath-taking.

Our son and a friend did a Colorado Trail hike...which meant driving from MN to Frisco, CO. So it was a bit nerve wracking as a parent sending two 20 year olds out of state on a hiking trip that will take them over 10,000 feet. So we researched it and I had my son watch I 70 driving videos since they would be driving through the Eisenhower Tunnel....and they did the trip and had a great time and got back safely. So it was a bit of a risk but we educated ourselves and set expectations for success.

Going downhill in the mountains, I'm assuming you do it the safe way and use your brakes just to slow down from too fast to safe quicky. Stab the brakes hard for a few seconds, then coast again. And do that at regular intervals. Keeps the brakes cooler. Also use one gear lower than what got you up the mountain. (That's what truckers do.) I relived exiting Yellowstone to the east while watching this one. Another thought. I drove a big rig long enough to learn mountain driving, but the east exit from Yellowstone in a car made my sphincter very nervous.

I did it a couple of months ago from Silverton to Ouray in a Ram Promaster cargo van on a very nice day. It wasn't too bad but when I got out of the van at Ouray I honestly thought that my brakes were gone. They were smelling up a storm. I think going the other way is probably better on the nerves. Love that part of the world.

Nathan, you stress too much. Lol. Going up is much easier than going down. This summer we went the opposite direction you did (from Silverton to Ouray) in our 38' coach. It was a blast! It is one of my favorite passes, especially from the technical aspect. When we got to the real twisty steep section, I just geared down to 1st gear and exhaust brake as needed and enjoyed the ride. I hardly needed to use brakes at all. There is just so much beauty out there. Thank you for the amazing video, it not only brought us back to the places we love, but also made me realize how much I miss out on by having to pay attention to the road while driving.

Over the numerous fall season visits I have driven that road numerous times a day but the most challenging was in fog with less than 100 feet visibility and occasionally less than 50 feet. But 18 wheelers drive it daily. One of these years I want to visit during the ice climbing festival.

I did the exact drive just in a car - I was white knuckles all the way and when I got out in Silverton I cried from being so scared for so long - on the return back at least you hug the mountain 🏔

The colors are amazing. Looked fun but a little intense of a drive.

Our only trip to CO we drove Trail Ridge Road through the Rocky Mountain National Park from Grand Lake to Estes Park and back. Being from Indiana, THAT was knuckle whitening as we transitioned from the timberline to what they called the Alpine Tundra, I believe. Well worth the trip.
