I've been a casual player for over 25 years but could never wrap my head around scales. This video has finally made the concept hit home. I like the table of contents time markers to bring me to the next position. What I found especially helpful in this demonstration was how you bring the scales back down finishing out with the root chord. Thanks for the video. Nice work. Subscribed.

Only took me 3 minutes to realize the chart is inverted on both the X and Y axis. Cool. Yes, I am 100% aware that 'high' E is traditionally on top. And that we go left to right, righter => higher frets. It's just also literally the inverse of the visual aid.

i'm just relearning the guitar again after 30 years. lol. But maybe i'm wrong but I think the relative minor is always 3 half steps below the major key. A is 3 half steps below C. Thus A minor is the relative of C major. and E is 3 half steps below G. So, E minor is the relative of G major

JJ, thanks for the great content! I may have had a mind-blowing (for me...) revelation, please confirm if I'm correct or delusional ;-) Here is my question: Instead of learning all 5 Maj Pentatonic scales would I be able to solo using the Minor Pentatonic in the relative minor key to the major key the song is being played in?? For instance, if a song is in A Major, could I just use the F#minor pentatonic scale and be ok?
@walterobrien4676 жыл бұрын
Ty yes it is
@danielcoleman48072 жыл бұрын
You are correct. Any relative minor can be found by starting on the 6th note of a major scale. Example, C majors relative minor is A minor.
@danielcoleman48072 жыл бұрын
Having said that, C major scale sounds better for the key of C and A minor scale sounds better for songs in key of A minor. They have the relationship of Major to relative minor. Use the full scale with all 7 notes or the pentatonic scale. Works for both.

Excelent video and I would like to know your opinion about something. Considering that positions are just variants for playing a note; Don't you think it could be more practical especially for a begginer to learn just one position and move on and learn the other ones later, that if you wanna get deeper into it?
@Cmn4u65347 жыл бұрын
Johnny Valencia you are going to be extremely limited in the things you can do, better to learn them all and build on what you can do as you get better at the instrument
@joetroutt74254 жыл бұрын
As a beginner I learned the 5 positions in Am in a week. I don't see what's so hard about learning them. You just have to discipline yourself to practice everyday till you commit them to memory. Once you have memorized them put on a jam track and try to use those positions to solo with. Once you grasp the concept that the notes start over in the next position up/down the neck then you won't be stuck in the same position all the time.

why didn't you start from open strings beginning on 3rd fret of 6th string (G), then open 5th string (A), then 2nd fret on 5th string (B) etc? That should've been position 1 I think. In general how do you label the position number as 1, 2..? Is there a standard for that? It seems that each key has different position numbering which complicates things for a beginner guitarist

I've never been the greatest with theory but I'm starting to see how things are connected. Correct me if I'm wrong. You're basically playing the Em pentatonic scale as thats the relative minor to G major. So are there really any "shape" differences between major and minor pentatonic? Or is it the same set of shapes and it is determined to be major or minor depending on the key? Hope this made sense! Thanks and great lesson!

Hi JJ, Thank You for sharing this valuable lessons. I now understand the Major Pentatonic patterns. I have a question what if I want to start playing D Major pentatonic which I can start from Fret 10 but I really do not want to start that high and instead I would start with low frets like fret no. 3,2 or 1. Which pattern out of these 5 I would use ?. Do we run out of patterns or just memorize notes. I am slightly confused here. Could you please and point to the right lesson in this case. Thanks

the second scale position would start at the nut for the DMaj Pen. scale... you could move up further with a third position, etc.

Do the positions depends on what key...??????????
@TheForce_Productions3 жыл бұрын
Not really. We start in the fact that penthatonic minor and major both has the SAME five positions, the only thing that change in that shapes are the root notes. With that said, after you place that shapes depending on the key you want to play. I think the guy numbered the shapes here based on the key he's demonstrating, but that way is very confusing in my opinion.
@jonathanaldana49414 жыл бұрын
Question are all these boxes/shapes the same for any key? Do they just start on the key that you r going for ?
@joetroutt74254 жыл бұрын
I have found that different keys that are not the relative minor/majors start on different frets for different position. For instance Am position 1 doesn't start on the same fret as Cm position 1 but it is a position that you learn from the Am/C major scale. They kind of just cycle around the neck like a conveyor belt.

Pentatonic scales are 5-note scales. Major pentatonic scale is built on the first, second, third, fifth and sixth note of the "normal" major scale. If you want to play A Major pentatonic, take the major scale. So, you've got A B Csharp D E Fsharp Gflat (not counting the second A). You remove the fourth and sixth note, so you're left with A B Csharp E Fsharp. In the video, the tabs for each shape have red dots. The red dot is the root note, in this case it's G. So, when practicing A major pentatonic scale, move your fingers on the fretboard until the root notes are A. That's it. I hope that is clear.
@Majmune1234 жыл бұрын
Jan Buriak so that means if I play in A I can play also in Csharp D E and F. And all the shapes stay the same the only thing I’ll have to do is move em to the root Note right?
