i was so upset when i found out my university was offering online classes now because of the pandemic. when the year before i had to withdraw because my anxiety disorder was so bad i could not enter the classroom and was told i would fail my classes because i was not able to physically attend classes. my condition worsened and i ended up having to go to an iop because of how badly forcing myself to try and get through the anxiety and consequent depression that came from the constant intense anxiety. i had to either go to this iop or be involuntarily hospitalized by the way. my heart goes out to everyone feeling cheated by an ablest system and all of those who hurt themselves trying to live up to, what is apparently arbitrary, standards because access is inconvenient and costs money hahaha this was supposed to just be an engagement comment but

I know you made this comment a week ago but, THANK YOU FOR MAKING THIS COMMENT! I talked to one of my parents multiple times about how online classes are actually beneficial and very much needed from some people, with anxiety as an example, and they brushed it off with, "That's only gonna make it worse" "That's why they need to get used to it" I JUST WANT TO SCREAM AT THEM AHHHH

Some lessons to learn from the Pandemic in 1918: 1. Lifting social distancing prematurely is not a good idea. 2. In cities like Denver and St. Louis that implemented the strictest measures the soonest, the pandemic curve was effectively flattened. Source: see section "Timeline #3 - The Evidence From 1918" here: covid19-insights.squarespace.com/blog/covid19-insights-7 me: It's almost as if our economic model is doesn't care to learn from the past. Just make quick profit and nevermind the future consequences or to heed the warnings of the past. 😩

Yeppp. Boris saying we can't close too early because of the economic cost, while other countries that took more drastic measures (even discounting countries that allowed governments to cross reference mobile phone data, CCTV, credit card payments etc since the UK and USA categorically refused those, Ireland and New Zealand did sooo much better) now have effectively beaten it and are reopening... so now Boris feels like we have to reopen too to not be at a disadvantage. Even though staying open for longer was meant to take advantage of the vacuum left behind by other countries closing sooner. As you say, it's almost as if they don't learn from the past.......

@@Khayyam-vg9fw it’s true, the countries which got infections down to zero kept getting reinfected by reckless countries like the UK thanks to a repeated cycle of late lockdowns and early lifting. It’s amazing it happened like 4 or 5 times with apparently no lessons learned between any of them. And now we’re just letting it infect everybody every few months. There’s record numbers of sickness absences from school and work, too.

You know what, I am from Russia. And there are so many things, that we take for granted. Medical ensurance for almost no money, free medicine (yes it is sometimes not so good, but it is), a lot of businesess came to distance work, a lot of steps government made for gentle (no armour) restriction of people for their own sake, a lot of quarantine hospitals were built. And everyone looks abroad to america like there is better. It's strange

Thank you for making this vid! I just want to add for anyone seeing this in the UK, if you are self-employed/gig economy or still employed or on furlough but it's not paying enough hours to pay ur rent and foods you are probably entitled to universal credit. The calculation they make is rent plus £57/week - 63% of the previous month's income. The system is incredibly overwhelmed so be persistent if you need this.
@kaitlyn__L4 жыл бұрын
How good is UC about actually covering rent nowadays? At the start of the rollout (years ago) some disabled friends were given an even worse deal on rent by UC than the bullshit Local Housing Allowance caps on council-run Housing Benefit were giving them.

The most dramatic example that springs to mind for me is the idea of transferring our consciousness into a computer, but there are lots of much more subtle examples. I don't remember if prosthetics and artifical organs are included in the umbrella, but it wouldn't surprise me. I assume the inclusion of it here is about some of those more subtle concepts, not the transferring consciousness bits. I don't know what specific connection they're thinking of.

so you'd prefer blissful ignorance?
@kaitlyn__L4 жыл бұрын
@@EmileFeik tbh let's not mischaracterise self care as disregard, hmm? If we try to make people feel guilty for needing to disengage, even temporarily, then we only make the burnout problem worse. In the long term that lowers our numbers considerably, just for some dubious short term gain in the number of people being involved. Choosing to take some space and re-assess what our mental health will allow us to do in the struggle is not selfish, and mischaracterising it as choosing to live in "ignorant bliss" is blatantly intellectually dishonest - no one is going to simply erase their brain of political advocacy just for needing to take a break. Being hostile to such things also discourages disabled activists from engaging in the first place, if we get too anxious about being socially punished for having to step back for a week, a month, a year. The culture of "you must be wired into bad news all the time and be angry about it all the time and CHANNEL THAT ANGER into ACTION" is one that privileges the abled as the only ones who can truly contribute, and it's not even sustainable for the most able bodied and healthy minded individuals let alone everybody else. Capitalism deliberately puts people under intense pressure so we're too worried about where next month's rent is going to come from to be politically active, so we don't need to add onto that pressure within our own ranks.

Come on, you gotta understand, that the mortality is mostly among older people or people with chronic disease. Young healthy people can absolutely handle being sick with covid-19 while isolating them selves for a couple of weeks. Yes there has been a rise in deaths of young people, but those cases are where people are put in hospitals among other sick people, where the virus spreads really rapidly. This is a big problem, and the reason why you should NOT go to the hospital unless it's absolutely vital.
