Whether they would be trudging through the jungles of the pacific or the hedgerows of France soldiers depended on this vital piece of equipment to carry their personal belongings, rations, and mess equipment. No matter how cumbersome they could be, they were an absolute necessity to our fighting men as they are to the basic equipment of your impression.

Fun fact, you can carry several hundred rounds of ammo in your pack on top of the rest of your patrol load. Not that I recommend going that overboard. Pounds equal pain when you’re in the field.

You need a PhD in physics to pack that thing. The British 1937 webbing system seems much better by comparison.

I work as an animal packer. I use essentially canvas blankets to wrap gear and tie with a rope. It makes sense to me and I can see where the thinking comes from. However with the tech they had, I think sticking to the older wrap style that the haversack uses was a poor choice. Fast forward to our generation and yeah it’s completely un-intuitive

I bought a Haversack which is a 1942 dated Boyt a couple years ago at a estate sale and have it packed with a old army blanket and have a M1910 Etool on it and in place of the M1 bayonet which is staying with the belt I put in a M6 Scabbard with M3 trench knife.

How does this system compare to a modern rucksack? Has anyone used both?

The haversack is more for moving to a bivouac site. Unpack, set up, and pack up to move to the next bivouac site. The realities of modern combat highlighted the shortcomings of the system. The 1944 system went into development in late 42 and was tested stateside for about a year. Approved in 1944. Issued Stateside first, since new troops were going overseas and M 28 gear was already in use there. The new gear had an actual backpack and a 2 bag system like the Marine Corps had used since 1940. Between any of this and a modern ruck? No comparison. TBH, the M 28 seems more versatile. I would have used some kind of bag inside it, especially for light loads.
