One thing not taken into account is the live music scene in terms of “mainstream-ness”. I may be biased because I tend to mostly go to raves/festivals, but EDM shows are some of the best produced and highest attended of any shows I’ve been to, and it gets a consistent rabid audience to continue going. In my area alone there are minimum 4 really big 2-3 day shows a year plus a dozen smaller 1-2 day events that bring in the biggest names in EDM. Not sure if that can make something “mainstream” or not, but it is most certainly popular.
@robbiedubbelman3024 Жыл бұрын
EDM is as mainstream as can be... It's common denominator music... Anyone can get it because of the bombastic 4 on the floor that grounds it. I have never heard an EDM song that challenged my ears or conception of what music can be. Bonnaroo is one of the biggest music festivals in the US and it grew from indie/alt/jam rock roots; nowadays it has a fully committed 24/7 EDM stage, multiple other fully committed EDM stages, and when there are musicians booked after midnight that play instruments, you now have to remind EDM lovers that Roo isn't primarily an EDM festival and it's okay to have non-EDM artists (yet it is easily the most represented genre). I can speak for the fact that piano is SOOOOOO helpful for arranging. I also play the violin, but it has basically no carryover to writing songs, beyond knowing how to use a violin in a song. That piano experience transfers *perfectly* onto the paper or DAW, no awkward conversions or anything.

I personally use more RYM because it has a larger userbase
@tcaporale4 Жыл бұрын
Yeah this, and also I think it’s easier to find more obscure albums there. Plus I think the stuff people on RYM champion/recommend is more aligned with my tastes, maybe that’s because AOTY skews younger with its user base and now that I’m in my thirties there’s some difference in generational tastes there. I do like AOTY though and I think it’s got a great, less toxic community. Although I’d also say the toxicity of RYM gets overstated, I think most interactions and album pages there are fine, there’s just a few that devolve into arguments

Usually people with negative views on certain music, know nothing about it and haven't even listened to the album they are hating on. Or artist/band. It's why I tend to not give a fuck what people say about music. But you have a balanced palette I feel. If that makes any fucking sense. Anyways, dope shit. Fuck the music haters who have no knowledge of music and can't even write music, yet they think they know more than the creators.

I like AOTY for its user interface and its userbase being very LGBT friendly, RYM is fine if a bit rock purist

@@cyinic Technically RYM is 1-10 since you can give things half star ratings, But I get what you mean. Personally I find it _easier_ to give a rating on a smaller scale (1-10 or 1-5), Just because it requires less thinking, I can pretty easily go "Do I hate this, Dislike it, Am I meh about it, Do I like it, Or do I love it?" and then get a 1-5 rating from there, Although 1-100 is definitely more meaningful, Because with a smaller scale I'll often find myself ranking two things I enjoyed to quite different degrees as the same thing.

couldn't disagree more about the Smashing Pumpkins take. Billy Corgan was always the main focus and the creative drive of them since day one, not to mention the fact that these days (or at least a few years back) both James Iha and Jimmy Chamberlain were back in the band. Corgan can't be that much of a "tyrant" if 3/4s of the original band were happy to get back together. Adore also rules.

I will say, AOTY as an interface is incredible. But as a community, it can be hit or miss wherever you go. And the average user scores tend to get swayed heavy based on larger opinions like you, brad taste in music (who is raised up as a God on that site for some reason, no hate to him tho, he's entertaining), and a couple other popular reviewers on the site. There are also a lot of very small niche artists that get added to the site for the sole purpose to either get overly praised or overly hated. But all-in-all AOTY is still better and cleaner than RYM.
@dwahwuiadhwaiudwuhwaiudhwa1494 Жыл бұрын
The “fantano effect” or “Brad effect” in most scenarios is mainly placebo or very hard to notice. I gathered some data and found the average rating shift after a fantano or Brad upload on an albums was typically less than 0.5/100 and that’s not taking into account that there would be change from new people finding it from that. Also yeah, the site would be better without Brad Taste, most users don’t like Brad or his fans.
@zacharywoloszynski4258 Жыл бұрын
Yeah that sums it up pretty well I dont think the site would be better without Brad though, he's grown the site so much by putting it in his youtube videos and lifestreams.

As someone that started going to house clubs and underground raves in the late 1980s I find the whole notion hilarious. It was a bunch of kids partying in sleazy clubs and dirty warehouses. There was no radio play. No record sales. The general public had no idea the scene even existed. Cut to 25 years later and EDM is everywhere. Films, TV, advertising, DJs are international celebrities with multi platinum selling albums. Everyone's grandparents know what EDM is. I'm pretty sure that's the dictionary definition of mainstream.

Artists should be paid if their work gets sampled, yes, BUT... There should def be a cap on sample clearing prices and royalties. Like I dunno, you can't charge more than 100K and you can't collect more than 90%. Also like a 10 year denial clearance, there's so many bands that reject sampling flat out. So if after 10 years you're still against being sampled, charge 'em 100K per sample and collet 90% of the royalties.
