Genre is helpful as a categorization tool and in some ways helpful as a starting point for artists to create from, but ultimately an arbitrary necessity. Just as language is a reductive valve for feeling and emotion..as is genre. It’s only purpose is to point out similarities in theme, style, and aesthetic and my problem with it is when artists dedicate their entire careers to a singular genre. It’s limiting in a way that only homogenizes aesthetics rather than pushing artists to invent new sounds and ideas. But all that said genre has its purpose and I think it’s ok for audiences to use it to guide them to certain styles of music. I just don’t think artists should limit themselves to it all the time. It’s a slippery slope into creating derivative work when one should strive to be authentic as possible.

also for the loudness wars, i can appreciate the aesthetic of some crazy-bricked SoundCloud shit for sure, but if you do your mixes at around -6db and give it to an experienced mastering engineer, you will get a higher quality record. the issue isn’t with loudness, but harshness, engineers can add distortion to give you that same effect. if you’re doing it diy in your bedroom I’d tell you to smash that joint, but if you can, go to a pro. let them squash it in a more meaningful, technically correct way. that’s the difference between theory and engineering vs mastering. you want to be creative with the composition, and also with the mix (as well as technical), but mastering is purely technical.

Vinyl has more dynamic range than digital music. The mastering engineer will create a second version of the master with more dynamic range if he knows it's going to be pressed to vinyl because vinyl has a tendency to distort at the loudness level we're used to. That's actually a large part of the perceived difference of analog vs digital that doesn't really get talked about. People think they're hearing a "higher quality version" because it doesn't have any "digital artifacts", but lossless digital audio doesn't have audible artifacts, and the vast majority of records made today, even those printed on vinyl, are entirely recorded onto a digital medium, which would nullify the entire idea that vinyl would be exempt from digital artifacts. The real unspoken appeal of vinyl is the alternate master, and not a lot of listeners know about it.
