yes, of course - the person who wants to be on the stage in front a large audience needs to sometimes point back at isolated cases of something because the entire fanbase deserves it. Just like the difference between twitch chat vs the viewer numbers (or any large enough channel) - 90% of his fanbase will never send him anything or even comment under the video. This is really just "hey, this will work for context, I guess", over top the whole "boo hoo, I get bad takes sent to me all the time, because that is a statistical certainty". Also - the whole "fanbase deserves X" is just simping behavior.

Honestly I think most people don’t have of hot takes. I think the majority of the people that send you things only do so feel pressured to invent something because they would feel rewarded by interacting with you. That’s how you get contrarian takes like “King of Limbs is better than OK computer” or the million “X artist is overrated”. Its easy to say things and make them sound controversial or to be controversial just for the sake of it. People simply don’t have as many unpopular opinions as they may think. My hot take would honestly be that you should focus more on the “tough questions” part of the Let’s Argue series. You’re the one that is more likely to have good hot takes since you know way more about music history and the current landscape than most people do, yet it’s so rare to see any tough questions here. I think you should encourage them more and focus a little bit less on the hot takes and unpopular opinions.

You know what’s funny about that guy’s take on instrumental music... it’s the opposite direction for classical music. As you said in different words, popular music is popular because it’s sung in a way that seems doable by a regular person, and the way you said it adds to my idea about classical music and why vocal music isn’t often on classical radio: my original idea is that classical vocal music is not well received because it’s not sung in as universal a way, but also, I wouldn’t put it past classical audiences to want to gatekeep their “greatest” music by not offering the opportunity to sing along.

I think Fantano is taking his music knowledge for granted here. He has 'the curse of knowledge' in that he can't see that others don't have the scope of knowledge he does, because he's so involved and spends so much time with it. For example, other music nerds may know that Elvis built his catalogue on covers of black R&b + Rock n roll hits, often denying credit to the original artists, but your average Joe/Jane probably isn't aware of that, and it seems a little presumptuous to assume they do.

As much as I hate the "X is underrated" comments it's easy to forget that as a music fan of a younger generation my perception of what's popular in music circles and online is very different to what I experience in the real world. There are timeless classics whose popularity persists throughout generations (like the Beatles or Queen) but there are also many artists that kind of fade into obscurity for people who haven't grown up around them. While yes, Kate Bush was insanely popular a few decades ago I have personally never met someone my age who either knows who she is or could name one song/album of hers.

@henmister393 жыл бұрын
Idk melon Kate Bush only has 3mil monthly listeners on Spotify, and personally speaking I don’t think I’ve ever heard any of her songs. Perhaps “underrated” was the wrong word for that commenter to use but saying that she deserves to be more well known by the mainstream (which is a form of being underrated) is a valid take I think. That one just didn’t strike me as that bad, and you came off as having a very narrow and limiting definition of what can be called “underrated.”

I have a genuine hot take but I don’t have Instagram or wherever these are posted so here goes: Thin Lizzy is very under appreciated in the west. The Boys Are Back In Town is to Thin Lizzy what Creep is to Radiohead, and it does them no justice. The true epitome of the band is Waiting for an Alibi which is a banger if I do say so myself. I have no idea why they don’t get mentioned more in the conversation of 70s hard rock when they’re as good as Blue Öyster Cult if not better
@jvictor30483 жыл бұрын
I agree. Thin Lizzy fucking rips and it's a shame they're mostly forgotten when it comes to popular 70s Hard Rock. Their dual guitar melodies, especially, are super influential not only in their genre but also in Heavy Metal as a whole.

I'm pretty sure there's an Elvis quote where HE said he wasn't the king of rock. It was never a secret.
@justindestafney3 жыл бұрын
For real, as an Elvis super fan, I've seen countless quotes by him giving past artists and contemporaries their dues. I obviously think he's the greatest of all time, but when people bring up how there were other bands and singers before him doing similar things I also think to myself ''No shit, he's said the same thing lol". People try to use him as a scapegoat for 'stealing music' when he'd be one of the first people to talk about rock n roll's black roots and black artists who influenced him in many interviews.

Piss Warm Take- I really believe that Mindless Self Indulgence should be considered as Proto-Hyper Pop. Though I agree that sonically their sound is not exactly in the same vein of the likes of 100 Gecs Etc.. But they truly share the concept, and the general spirit, of making super melodic hook-heavy pop songs and then take it apart and bring it all to a wild and quirky extreme while blending as many genres as possible, which are generally the same genres Hyper Pop is blending today- Hip Hop, Metal and Heavy Electronic music. With all the recent talk and rising popularity of the genera I don't think I ever heard them being mentioned.

Its a little hard to bring up underrated artists in a way that you can talk about though, cuz there's several bands that I think are really underrated and deserve a lot of attention, but they don't have enough of a following for anyone else to recognize them. Like oh boy, everyone's definitely gonna pay attention during the part where he talks about the band with 140k monthly spotify listeners that one random guy thinks is interesting and really experimental
@thepinkplushie3 жыл бұрын
I live for Pink Floyd takes. Its like 80% boomers yelling into the void about kids not appreciating music (often while holding super conservative and regressive views that are so contrary to what Floyd was talking about on a lot of their music). I find it especially entertaining because people like this are precisely why it's difficult to engage with the music outside the music itself. If you wanna discuss it you inevitably have people who grew up with the music telling you you're interpreting it wrong. Also a lot of "born in the wrong generation" types.
@thepinkplushie3 жыл бұрын
No one tell people that Animals isn't underrated and really isn't even underplayed. Like its never gonna hit the numbers of more accesible formats but it still pulls decent numbers. Especially given how harsh and grating parts of it can be. Like, I suppose a lot of Dogs could be music to relax and chill to, but Sheep and Pigs are very harsh and not particularly relaxing to me lol.
