This series is fantastic. I'm seriously considering shopping for a kit. It looks like it would be a very rewarding project.

Looking good brother. It amazes me that people can see the shape in the wood... like my wife picking colors for a room, I simply cannot see it in my mind.. lol I reckon I'm going to have to get a kit to build soon, as I feel the itch taking hold. Enjoying the series. Thank you!

You did great, looks better than out of the box !👍 You are right about building things and not just going to the store and picking one up. I hope to do the same thing this year.

Its nice how you go into detail on the basics of using the tools. Seems like there are a lot of people that want to build guns but just don't have the experience with the tools.

Coming along nicely. Taking your time is key. I may have tried some sharp chisels, but less likely to have a big oops with files and sandpaper, safer bet. Thanks for bringing us along on this build.

I use scrapers for this as they work quickly and efficiently. They come in straight, and curves so don't sweat it. Matter of fact I do the fore ends of full stocks from square to finished shape with scrapers in a couple of hours. Files are used to even out high spots but if you take time and do long strokes you will be surprised at how fast it shapes up.

The cheek pieces on Hawkins resemble the ones on Jaegers. I think Hawkins is an Anglicization of a German name Haachens or something like that. Really nice job.

That is a nice result and now some final grinding, wet sanding and a final polish with rottenstone for a perfect oiled gunstock. 😜👍 and you made the extra outer line . How about rust blueing for the metal parts 😉?

In case this is unfamiliar, before applying any finish to the stock, look up 'whiskering'. It's an old method to ensure grain doesn't rise when humid or wet and mess up finish.

@@ILoveMuzzleloading Just kidding about your kitty, I`m looking at the Gemmer Kit for my next project, but I`m still waiting on my SMR from Kibler. Apparently the extra fancy maple is harder to come by, but I`m waiting patiently.

I am not a wood worker, so I may be totally off track here, but the amount of wood that you removed from around that cheek piece it would seem to have been easier to do with chisels. I like the way that the build is coming out though. Also, it would seem that your cat has laid claim to that rifle and it is now his and he is only letting you borrow it.
@ILoveMuzzleloading2 жыл бұрын
I probably could have, but with the grain going all around I found it safer to rasp and file. Maybe with some experience I’ll try a chisel next time. Yep, I think it’s the cats rifle now too
@usnchief13392 жыл бұрын
Agreed...use gouges, cut with the grain, keep them very sharp and keep your fingers away from the cutting edge.

Hey buddy I really love your videos! As a journeyman craftsman it drives me crazy to see you constantly sawing back and forth with your files which as you know are designed to only cut on the forward strokes . Dragging backwards not only tends to look slightly amateur but it eventually dulls the file to . Please don’t be offended I really love your videos and have purchased my own plains model percussion because of you !just trying to give you a pointer .from a friend by the way can you tell me were I might find a copy of bob woodfields book

They are sold out as far as I’ve seen. I’m hoping Bob does a second printing
@stephengent99742 жыл бұрын
You would be better off using cabinet scrapers to finalize that cheek piece. Keeping using rasps just causes more work.
