If you didn't win I can heartily recommend the Pinecil and the Sequre nano 60. (I bought one when I too did not win, but the Pinecil is a $25 version of the TS100 with the power versatility of the TS80 too. Excellent soldering irons. )

I do want that iron. Last year or maybe it was the year before my neighbor had the vacuum fluorescent display go out on his Chevy and thanks to your videos I knew how to fix it and that that little thing in the corner meant the display was good and not a bad display as my mind would have told me thanks for posting we appreciate it.

first time i’ve seen inside an instrument cluster. very informative. i wonder how much component similarity there is between different vehicle manufacturers. surprised to see the multiple stepper motor used - makes sense for large dial analog speedo & tachometer. the one plug interface makes for easy changeover. i hate to guess cost of unit. impressed by your fault finding/fix using visual cues, simple voltage & current tests only (no schematic).

Great videos. I love them all. You are so good at doing this stuff I can't get enough. I always won something so don't put me on the list. The wire strippers and multimeter. I would love to try doing this stuff but at 71 cannot afford to buy all the things and learn it all. What kind of solder do you use and flux and what kind of alcohol cleaning do you use? Rubbing alcohol? Still have steady hands though.....lol

Seeing the tip on that makes my iron look like a pencil with a dull end.

It's also possible the vehicle was reverse polarity fed when he tried to jump it which would cause all sorts of shenanigans. Definitely interested in the Sequre Nano. Been on the lookout for a soldering micro pencil. Fortunately I'm in WI so qualify lol. If not I'll have to try to sweet talk the wife.

Thank you for another great troubleshooting video. Please enter me in the drawing for the soldering iron. That 3 ohm resistor is very puzzling. Could it have originally been some sort of protection device and was somehow replaced by the person who previously worked on the board by the wrong part? You mentioned that it seemed to have been worked on before, unless I mis understood. If they were trying to find the original number part is would have been easy to get a mis marked part or they just took a WAG.

Well done, it didn't take you long to cure it's illness doctor digital :-) I was mentally shouting at you when you ignored the two components with a burnt track between them. One is a layered capacitor that typically goes short for no dam reason. Usually laptops suffer from that.

A line to ground usually indicates a flyback diode for handling a sudden voltage spike. The kind of spike that also takes out display chips. I've had one fail on my Peavey Tube Amp and it basically did the same thing - registered as a short to ground. This era of Chevy is full of weird electrical problems, particularly in the charging circuit. I wonder if the alternator went full throttle. Alternatively, I wonder if he jumped it off a 24v system like a tractor rig.... That's a pretty cool little iron. I bet you could get some quick field repairs done with a USB battery bank. If I get selected, I'd gladly add it to my arsenal, but if not, I'll add it to my shopping list.

I've been meaning to ask. I've mentioned before that I repair classic car instruments but word of mouth gets around and I occasionally get an electronic cluster to look at. All I can really do is check for dry joints or anything that might be obvious but I can't power these things up. Now, this is Australia and there are maybe a handful of people who can repair these and their turn around time is in the months, if at all. My question is, where do you find the information on pin-outs in order to safely power these up ? I have to tell a customer that all I can do is check for mechanical failure like dry joints etc but I can't do electronic work because I refuse to take the chance to power up the cluster and damage it. It's kind of frustrating because I'd like to help the customer but I'm limited in what I can do. The customer can't get any satisfaction from the dealership because even they don't have the technical knowledge to repair or reset odometers in a replacement cluster and giving the cluster to a repair guy can take months. Many clusters too are coded to the vehicle which means going to a salvage yard won't help either. Anyway, sorry about the long comment.

Nice fix Jeff. There's one bulb that you never mention. It gets very little use and that's probably why. It also never comes on when you do a bulb check. It's the hi beam indicator. my guess is that it is powered up by the lighting or body control module but how would you power it up to check it, other than running a jumper wire? I'll put my name in for the soldering iron too, thanks.
