If you've never played the game, you should, and if you have no intention of playing it then you should at least watch a YT video of the entire story mode campaign. Well.... in House of M there's no human concentration camps and it's almost implied that Magneto is kind of a competent ruler. Humans are trated like a minority and not in the best possible way, but they seem to be treated better than how mutants are treated in the 616.
@davidjay71164 жыл бұрын
@@TheMrartistman Yeah, that's why I don't really dig this re-write. I don't see Magneto making a future that's as bad or worse as Sentinel-holocaust world. Maybe he's usurped control of the US (or the Western hemisphere or something) and the rest of the world is preparing a nuclear strike or something (the escalation of First Class) to get rid of him. But about the last person that would make a concentration camp would be Magneto.
@SaiyanHeretic4 жыл бұрын
@@davidjay7116 Wasn't it in the first X-Men movie that Magneto refers to mutants as "homo superior"? And his whole plan with that device was to turn more humans into mutants. Remember that Magneto is an extremist himself, however well-intentioned or morally justified (for what he has suffered as both a Jew and as a mutant). He's a mutant supremacist, full stop. In the Magneto Wins timeline, it is both feasible and likely that he succeeded at artificially 'evolving' more mutants. There may even be a caste system with natural-born mutants at the top, created mutants as second-class citizens, then homo sapiens at the bottom. A resistance could form of non-mutants plus mutant allies whom resist this literal eugenics campaign. Magneto is, if nothing else, definitely a "you're either with me or against me" kind of guy. If modern times have shown us anything, it's that anybody whom resists the status quo will be villified. How many Americans would say they'd never support the use of concentration camps here at home, conveniently ignoring both the history of that very thing happening to the Japanse during WW2, as well as the migrant internment camps and forced sterilizations taking place on the Southwest border?
@realtalk134 жыл бұрын
@@davidjay7116 i feel like depending on the writer, Magneto's characterization fluctuates in pretty important ways centered around this exact point. Some writers, similar to what you did, make the case that as someone who suffered such persecution, Magneto would not inflict the same extreme version of oppression and genocide on humans despite his superiority complex. Other writers suggest that it is precisely because of the trauma he experienced that he seeks a world free of persecution from humanity full-stop, in a classic "the oppressed becomes the oppressor"/"cycle of trauma" story line. Both are interesting and worth exploring, but in defense of Just Write and this re-write, the films and cartoons tend to follow the latter characterization more than the former.

@@davidjay7116 That stood out to me too as Magneto has always been this grey villain, doing morally questionable stuff for something you can empathize with. I kind of like the idea that they call back to his mutant changing device thingy from the first movie and have him succeed in doing that, only because it doesn't work properly it causes a mass genocide. After that its difficult to know exactly what to do because its kind of End Game territory but it could have created a kind of peace but maybe with Charles trying to rebuild and Magneto being despondent at the massacre he caused. I guess it skips the 'evil Xmen' in the future but I'm not sold on that idea. I dont think this idea fully works either but there is definitely something to fix in the magneto wins timeline.

One of the (many) issues of the X-men franchise for me is how the female villains and heroes are just so...lame. Storm is like...Xavier or Wolverine's assistant? It was pretty much just Logan, Magneto and Xavier that got any decent characters or plot goals. I think Quicksilver is the only side character that came out seeming pretty cool and not just an assistant. Perhaps some more standalone movies might have helped where the characters had their own goals or stuff to do that ran contrary to the other stuff happening. Defo needed stronger female characters, but needed stronger characters in general too.

This is one of my favorite KZbin channels, and I think you and Nando generally have brilliant insights into story, but...I strongly disagree on this one. First, I don't think the movie has a single protagonist, it really has three: Wolverine in the first act, Charles in the second, and Mystique in the third. And I think Mystique is ultimately the most important to understanding the themes. By the end, she's the character who undergoes the most change, she's the character who makes the decisions that sets history on one course or another, and she's the character who ultimately makes the final choice in the movie about how to resolve the conflict - something she can only do after Charles relinquishes control. The movie is about both Charles and Mystique learning to trust that other people can make the right decisions. Seen through that lens, the future Sentinels aren't extensions of Trask's story, they're symbolic extensions of Mystique's: they're literally (genetically engineered) versions of her, running around killing. They're what happens when fear and hatred and the desire to control others run unchecked, and Trask being alive or dead is irrelevant to that theme. The analysis here glosses over Mystiques importance entirely, and the rewrite essentially turns her into a MacGuffin. I also disagree that it's not a good follow up to First Class; the spine of DoFP is her relationship with Charles, which grew directly out of their relationship in FC. Of course, I'm biased because DoFP is my favorite of the X-Men movies, and of course it has flaws, but I think it's a lot stronger than it's being given credit for.

Nice analysis. Also, it is worth mentioning two things they also ignored: - That the re-made version clearly point fingers on who is right and ignores the theme of trusting others. This in turn shift the message from different world-view coexisting to make best possible future, to just "choosing the right person" which is profesor X and nobody else. - And second one is just pure technical problem of having restricted lenght. They cutted way too little material to fit this whole storyline of "Magneto future". To present that other future, new characters, new factions and their goal... you would need around 1 hour. At least if you want to do it properly and not have someone explain it to Logan in one big info-dump and then immidietly jump to the resistence turning the time around.

There's some great food for thought here - I especially love the idea of the triple timelines as emblematic of the X-Universe's themes as a whole. That said, this version strips out Mystique's arc entirely. Not only does this effectively write out the only female character arc in the movie, it also erases a major touchstone in Charles' arc (learn to believe again, overcome guilt = learn to let go and let other people make choices). So even though I agree with some of your points re: the movie's structure, young Charles/Mystique were far more compelling characters than Wolverine at that point in time, so overall I prefer the movie as written

Just for clarity, Trask's death in this rewrite is such a turbulent event to the flow of time that the "nothing is cemented until you wake up" thing that Kitty says early on gets overridden? Because if so, that's the entire point of the characters in the future. They aren't there "just to die," they're there to build on the worry that what Logan has changed won't be enough, that the sentinels will get to him before the better time line is created, and something maybe worse will take its place. That's why it's important that he's in the background of the scenes; to keep an eye on things and ensure it doesn't spiral so far out of control that the future gets worse. But, it's also why the characters in the past have to be the driving force. Nothing in the future matters except for keeping Logan in the past. And in that past, Xavier and Magneto and Mystique need to make the right choices to ensure a better tomorrow, but Wolverine needs to give them the space to actually make those choices, spurred by nothing but the awareness that what they're grappling with could mean a horrific future.

@Ganymede20484 жыл бұрын
Perhaps then for the Apocalypse movie that would follow this one, we can see the other shoe drop. Xavier's efforts to reach a middle ground between mutants and non-mutants works at first, but when a massive threat like Apocalypse arises, the X-men are held back by bureaucracy, thus revealing the fatal flaw of middle ground philosophies: they're contingent on nothing changing. With a threat like Apocalypse, the X-men would have to do unthinkable things, such as alter free will of non-mutants, or even sacrifice tens of thousands of non-mutants, all of which goes against the purpose of a middle ground. You can't have a middle ground if nature is stacked in favor of one side and in effect against another. It's like the equivalent of a trailer park versus a mansion when withstanding a hurricane. One property clearly has the advantage and the backlash after the disaster settles will be immense. By the third act, the middle ground falls from beneath their feet and the only hope at the end to protect the mutants that survived Apocalypse from the non-mutants that survived Apocalypse...is Magento. The middle ground at the start of the movie will transform into the armistice at the end. A massive battle occurs between non-mutants and mutants, only ending in a violent draw. By the end, mutants and non-mutants won't engage each other in violent conflict, but mutants are forever exiled to the outskirts of civilization.

DoFP just expounds on that, leading to Charles winning at the end by trusting Mystique to do the right thing instead of the wrong thing (AKA the Magneto thing). Although I agree about many of the logistical problems that you quote, I think you’ve missed part of the point: the X-Men’s struggle is not against Trask in this movie, nor against Magneto. It is against what has been Charles Xavier’s true enemy all along: hatred itself. That’s the point. The bad future shouldn’t be defined as “Trask Wins”, but rather as... “Hatred Wins”. No individual person is single-handedly responsible for it, and no individual person truly benefitted from it. There’s a reason why the Future Sentinels don’t even look like machines programmed by actual people, but rather like sadistic demons fueled by pure hatred: that’s in fact what they are. Hatred is the true villain of this movie. And Charles is its natural opponent. Charles is the only one who truly understands that this enemy can’t be defeated with brute force, but with empathy and compassion. When everyone, even his fellow good guys, tells him to use violence to stop Raven, he says no, because he realizes that wouldn’t solve anything. It would only delay the inevitable. That’s why changing “Raven can’t kill Trask” into “Raven mustn’t be captured by Trask” wouldn’t work. Because the point isn’t to prevent Raven’s blood from being taken, which would just eliminate the physical tools used to create the Sentinels. That is only the surface level of the problem. The actual core of it is to prevent Raven’s soul from being lost, and therefore to break the cycle of hatred before it can even start. And Charles makes it. He does what he does best, he helps a troubled and broken kid to become whole again. And by doing that, by saving a single person, he also saves the entire world. After all, to borrow and slightly alter a phrase from a certain Bat-vigilante: “a hero can be anyone. Even someone who does something as simple and reassuring as sharing a piece of cake with a scared little girl, to let her know the world hasn’t ended...”

That is interesting but it would not work. Wolverine's relationship with Jean was built in 1 movie not 4 or 5 like in MCU movies, so the callback to it would feel hollow. Also, because it's been 3 or 4 movies since we last saw her, it would be forgotten and is basically nonexistent. This movie (as you've written it) does not establish this relationship either which means that the emotional dilemma for Wolverine does not work well. And this essentially cuts the movie in half. There is no way to quickly explain Magneto's world and how it came to be, which means you're going to need an info dump 60% of the way in. Combine that with the fact that all stakes have changed and the status quo has changed and this will feel like a new movie rather than a buildup that orgincally adds to the previous first half. It's like how Fant4stic had a timejump halfway through the movie. It ruined pacing, plot, stakes, and added a huge amount of character change that was never Shown to the audience and made it feel unearned. It ruined that movie. This change would do the same. The failure at the midpoint of an action movie should add to stakes but not change the nature of them. This isn't a twist that changes our perspective on previous events but creates a new everything. As fun as it sounds, it simply would not work in a 2 hour Hollywood movie. If it were an indie movie with experimental structure and tone, it might, but Fant4stic is a case study for why changing the status quo in the middle of an action movie does not work. That being said, I like the idea of a sort of Magneto-ruling House of M timeline with Wolverine in a dilemma. If you have flashbacks with him at the beginning remembering Jean, then you might be able to get away with their relationship in the alternate timeline. But it's also important to show the audience how Xavier can work with humans better than Magneto to foreshadow both the timeline change and the happy ending, otherwise it won't have proper weight.

Nah, Days of Future Past is great, it doesn’t need a rewrite. It manages to be a wonderful swan song to the original cast while also being a great sequel to First Class, it expanded and developed Logan’s relationship with Xavier, Mystique’s journey to not become who she was in the original timeline (because if she does she literally dooms the world), Charles and Erik have made amends in the future having realized they were both wrong to antagonize each other while at the same time we see them completely opposite each other in the past.... and the Rogue Cut is the way to go with these movie, since we get to see a little bit of what has happened to Beast’s relationship with Mystique and we see the X Mansion ironically as a Sentinel lair, giving Iceman a cool sacrifice for the greater good. The only problem I see with the movie is basically twofold: there’s no reason Quicksilver can’t be brought in to help stop Mystique and later Magneto (because if they do, the movie is over, but still), and it’s strange that the Sentinels can shapeshift and acquire different powers when Mystique is only able to mimic appearances and not abilities (but whatever, the movie has to happen and it was a cool way to integrate character drama with the larger stakes of the plot).

Like you say, there’s a whole movie’s worth of events that have taken place, so maybe that’s what the sequel to First Class should have been, then this rewrite would serve to cap off the trilogy, as well as leaving the future timeline in a nice place. The first movie was about Magnito trying to take over the world, and the ‘last’ would see him not only succeed, but also ultimately change his mind. ‘*chef’s kiss*’

Seems like this kind of story, with two separate post apocalyptic futures, would require two movies to tell well. Which is kind of what the X-Men franchise deserves. Part 1 can focus most of the runtime on the new cast, and act as a sequel to First Class first and a sendoff to the original cast second, and Part 2 would focus the majority of the runtime on the old cast, and be primarily that send off. So now you don't have to do as much heavy lifting in two hours, and you get a big end-game level event for the X-Men.

But the Trask Wins Timeline doesn't _become_ the Magneto Wins Timeline; otherwise, you're just erasing the timeline that set everything into motion in the first place. @@Dagenspear Yes, I suppose I should have clarified that this is also an issue I have with the original, one that I would want any rewrite to fix. But in the original it is slightly less of a problem because the skip happens at the very end if the movie, so I spend less time hating it, haha.

idk man, its rlly reaching for something to be even better when in terms of the whole franchise, X-Men days of future is one of its best. Remember watching it as a kid, and it was so thrilling. It holds up to performances, some great, atmospheric filmmaking that you wouldnt expect with x men movies like this and a suspenseful plot that was grounded, to the characters and to political undertones, rather than 'big = bad' of the next two.

The main problem I find with this rewrite is that it lacks a the climactic fight scene, which is pretty much necessary for a superhero film. Instead, we could send Wolverine back to the past and have old Xavier tell young Xavier and Beast to go to the White House. The White House attack plays out like it does in the original movie, with the task being to remove young Magneto's helmet so old Magneto can talk to him. After a massive fight, we end up with the Xavier Wins timeline.

I'd like to second the notion of not normally being a fan of "this is how I'd rewrite x" but in a film thats existence is to rewrite the mistakes of X3, why not? All your changes are great. Giving Xavier the choice at the end not the midpoint makes so more sense and adds to the urgency but even more I think you're really onto to something with the alternate Magneto timeline. Its a trope in sci-fi and comics to show an alternate "dark timeline" be it JLA Rock of Ages, Star Trek (hell, even Darkwing Duck did one) but you never get see 2 competing dark timelines. Since the X-men comics and films are essentially about competing ideologies, it would be great to see those play put and how one extreme of one side is just as deleterious as another extreme. I think its great though that Wolverine is given a temptation and a way to get his desire to be with Jean achieved. Great stuff.

That was really beautiful! I would also embelish the rewrite with some seeds forshadowing the ending. Like short visions of a woman talking to him or hearing whispers all throughout the movie, even before his initial trip, culminating and blending with his visions of the weapon x experiments. This woman would be Kitty Pride from the future equilibrium guiding him through his journey to end up in the good future.

I love this. Showing every possible "X Guy Wins" timeline feels like the thesis of what X-Men has always been about. Characters are always fighting about whose ideology is better, so what does it look like when each ideology *actually* wins? The themes are all about changing the world, so what does that changed world actually *look* like?

It’s an interesting rewrite but it seems like you guys inadvertently echoed the story twist of X2. What I mean is that X2 had a main human villain Stryker who had a means of harming mutants (Jason) and near the end of the movie, Magneto uses the means of harming mutants (Jason) to then harm humans and that is then the conflict that the X-Men have to stop. In your rewrite, you have a human villain Bolivar Trask who has a means of harming mutants (Sentinels), however Magento then takes over the means of harming mutants (Sentinels) and then that is the conflict that the X-Men are stopping. In the original film, Trask’s death makes him a martyr and a catalyst of fear among human society to go full steam ahead on the Sentinel project and put mutants in a concentration camp. That is why when Trask is alive and advocating for the Sentinel project, the US government is dismissive of his concerns. This is because mutants while having been involved with a major event (The Cuban Missile Crisis), they mostly stayed hidden and out of sight with the more public mutants being out of commission (Xavier-drugged up and Magento-imprisoned). As it stands, the only major threat is Mystique who because of her successful asssaination leads to most humans thinking that they could be killed by a mutant and thus publicly support the Sentinel project and lead to the mutant dystopia. Though your guys rewrite does have the conflict be stopped by Magneto being morally convinced to not oppress humans which differs from X2 where his efforts were stopped by Storm intervening with her powers. So that’s an interesting place for Magneto to go.

I think this analysis may have been a bit hyperfocused on the idea of making the most it can out of the ”old and young characters interacting” gimmick. And I think the importance of the Charles/Charles scene is underplayed a bit. Sure Charles chooses to put the needle down, but to pretend like his growth moment should just happen in one fell swoop is kind of short changing the gravity of his affliction. Yes he made the choice to stop spiralling further and further down, but to pretend that he has the courage and hope to truly move on in that very instant is not a good take. The Charles/ Charles scene is not just extra flavour, it is literally the turning point for his character, where upon seeing his hopeful future self urging him to keep going (and let’s face it, if anyone could ever convince you of anything, it is your future self), that’s when he begins to have a more positive disposition. It’s what allows him to concince Mystique to be the better person. Hope is the main theme of this story, hope for the future. Magneto and Trask, main antagonists, have none, they want absolute control over mutantkind. The future characters have the most hope, they live in a future hellscape and yet they fight to the death and persevere for the chance of making the world better for everyone, and the past with our team of heroes is where the tug o’ war conflict with this theme lies, with Charles embodying this theme by having it first grow within himself and then being able to pass on that hope for others and create that better future through exercising his hope in trusting Mystique to believe things can be better when she herself is at her low point in that regard. Thematically this movie is incredibly coherent and cohesive, I don’t think it’s ”fine”, I think it’s GREAT and the idea of sacrificing a lot of its power in order to take plot devices a few steps further is not a great idea.

Great video guy! You make a lot of great points, but one thing I'd say is flawed in your arguments is the "Trask wins timeline". I'd say it's more accurate to call it the "fear wins timeline". Mystique infiltrated one of the most highly guarded meetings of world leaders in history and killed one of Americas leading scientists. It makes a lot of sense that Trask's death would cause Nixon to shovel funding into continuing the research to combat mutants, especially when you think about how hard he fought to keep us in Vietnam to combat the fake "communist threat" in our worlds history. Also Stryker was there to keep the research going and we all know his beef with mutants from X2. I personally think that Trask's death leading to the dark timeline nails the message at the heart of X-Men, hate and fear turn people into the monsters they think they're protecting us from. Otherwise great video! I love your content, especially your videos on Korra and Death Note!

Granted this rewrite doesn't sound bad, it sounds like it could be super convoluted if they actually did it. This movie is one of the best comic book movies every made. It has substance, great visuals, great acting, great soundtrack, everything. And it actually pulling time off time travel makes it that much better. My biggest problem with it is that I was disappointed that we didn't see that much of the future. I think it could have really benefited from being 3 hours. But they were able to write so many plot points in the story and pull them all off with the length that it had. This rewrite having multiple different futures, although giving the old cast more screen time, could have really fucked the movie up.

Sentinels/Dr Trask are best X Men villains. Trask is Magneto before suffering trama via persecution and created a golem military, Sentinels, to prevent that persecution. Were you guys confused about the Trask bit? The reason they don't buy into his silly robots is because the mutants are seen as an oddity, not a threat at this time. Mystique killing him proves they are a threat, so the plans are used. Without Trask's death, he never gets the government's support or funds to make his dream a reality. It's not that complicated
@AKen_Films4 жыл бұрын
It’s weird when I think about it. When it comes to these X-Men films, (former) 20th Century Fox or their other studios keep rethinking where they want this series to go between each movie. The exceptions are the direct sequels X2 and DOFP where those movies were gonna get made given the success of the last film. But when it comes to the third outings, (like Last Stand and Apocalypse) the more experimental spin off films ( Like Wolverine Origins, Deadpool and Logan) the studio keeps second guessing what they wanna do next. In the middle of production they change directors, decide they want to set up other stories, etc... Withe spin-offs I do put Deadpool and Logan in the same category of experimentation because they were both films that Fox didn’t initially want to make and the writers just gotta make the movies they wanted which is always considered a risk in the eyes of big studios to allow for big franchises like X-Men. Origins and the studio guesses what fans will like... we don’t have to go there. The Wolverine was just meh. I don’t have much to say about it. The point is, Fox with X-Men ultimately lacked that commitment to consistency. Consistency that also, (not trying over praise here) Marvel was able too adopted and became successful with. It became too little too late for Fox to realize this and that was when Marvel along with Disney swallowed them whole. The only thing that feels frustrating to me about this is Fox absolutely COULD have tried to build a universe of consistent films with the X-Men. You know, the ways it is in the comics?! (Although I know for comics it’s multiverse and time-lines) If only some working at Fox was forward thinking enough back in the early to 2000s to try and commit to a real road map like this for the franchise we might even be singing praises for the X-Men cinematic universe! Then again, Deadpool and Logan may not have been made the same way if that were to happen. Oh well... here’s hoping Disney follows through on that X-Men live action tv series they’ve said they wanted to make.

I'm sorry, but I found this rewrite to be more convoluted than the movie, never mind that it would probably have been quite a bit longer too. The original movie was already 151 minutes long. Adding more material, including Wolverine going on a journey to find Kitty Pryde so she could them send him into the past again, would probably result in a timeline easily in excess of three hours. Plus, the original movie is a more faithful adaptation of the Days of Future Past comic, which was centered around Kitty Pryde being sent to the past to prevent a dystopian future by stopping Mystique from assassinating someone, much like the movie even though that replaces Kitty Pryde with Wolverine.
@92brunod4 жыл бұрын
6:51 "Did you follow all that?" Ehmm, yes "It's pretty convoluted"... Not really Thematically the movie makes WAY more sense too. It's Trask assasination that wakes up the public to the dangers of mutantkind, without it there is no reason his silly counter-measure plan would go through. Also it's what uncovers Mystique. She can turn into anyone so the fact that Trask even KNOWS she exists AND has those powers AND that those powers can be translated into sentinels AND is able to catch her is EXTREMELY outlandish. Her being captured after Trask's assasination and being experimented on makes tons more sense as she exposed herself to do it and there would be no reason for Trask to want to capture her in particular without godlike knowledge. The Magneto wins timeline is the only thing this video should have been about
@cruddddddddddddddd3 жыл бұрын
Okay - not bad. Bendis actually did something similar in his Age of Ultron storyline, but this is pretty fun. I think I would miss the sentinel-future showdown at the climax, but they could even be repurposed to hunt humans now - Magneto stole Trask’s plans, which is how mutants won. Or something. Good stuff, from a writer to a writer.

The magneto time idea is pretty cool but is also kinda the world of house of M. Wolverine wakes up in an alternate reality with memories of the old reality, Magneto doesn't rule the world but he has his country. Wolverine has his perfect life, he is with Mistique, small different but he has his own team and everything. And similar to your idea he had to ignore his now perfect world to go find out what happened and why it's a lie.

The one problem with the future scene with both the original movie and this excellent rewrite is that by showing everything works out in the future and everyone lives, then the stakes for our heroes is removed in future movies. Perhaps the future scene instead should be the Apocalypse wins timeline as a tie in to the next movie. Going further, X-Men Apocalypse could end with the Dark Phoenix wins timeline. Make Xavier speaking with his future self a staple of the movies until at the end of Dark Phoenix, we get the teaser for the Logan timeline.

The film is names for her but its about Xavier, Beast, Magneto and Cyclops.

Excellent work guys. Though I might make one additional suggestion: when wolverine gets to the past, he finds out that he is the one responsible for the Trask wins timeline. That way they understand that it was messing around with time in the first place that caused the entire fold, and the reason that this movie even exists, and as distinct from the way the timeline was progressing as of the three original mainline X-Men movies.We won’t know what the original cost was for the timeline to shift to the Trask wins timeline, but it definitely suggests that wolverine trying to fix things in the first place caused this loop. So now he has to figure out a way to do things differently.
