We’re on the hunt for our next boat! We’re looking for a trimaran that’s big enough to live on for several weeks to a month+ at a time, but still small enough to trailer. It’s been tough - if not impossible! - to find. So far most of the boats we’ve seen have been too small in one dimension or another, so in this episode, we try to go BIGGER.
Hope you enjoy!

There is no prefect boat, only the best available compromise. As for a tow rig, I tow a travel trailer with a mid duty truck (2000 International 4700 flatbed). Lots of towing capacity and our car rides on the flatbed (15,000#). Having a car while traveling lets us park the truck and use a smaller car to explore the area. It is a good compromise for us. Enjoy your adventure with the family. Children do grow up so fast. i was fortunate enough that my family had a power boat when I was young. Sixty years later I still remember them as good years.

Personally I like the Corsair 37 but there are issues. At 6700 lbs light displacement that is over the 6000 lbs you indicate is load for your van. Q- is that the capacity with towing equipment (HD shocks/lifters and springs, extra transmission and engine oil cooler)? If not and the max load can be upped to 8000lbs then it might be possible with an alum trailer with brakes and antisway. Next issue is the mast which I assume is approx 49' long given the 56.5' height above water level. Unless you always go to locations where there is a crane to step/unstep the mast, you would need to have the mast base be a tabernacle and rig up a 20' wishbone ^ lifter attached to the rear roof of your van (back up van to lift the top of mast high enough to continue lifting with winch at boat's stern combined with a separate wishbone). Also trailering with 49' mast with be a challenge and the 9'10" width may cause some "wide load" issues in some states. This 37' Corsair would be suitable for Caribbean and having guests. Best of luck whatever you decide.

The tris are fast for sure. For a total of four years a few years apart I owned a trailerable keel boat, Santana 20, that I had to lower and raise the mast to launch, etc. then later a 19' Flying Scot (correction) day sailor on trailer which I had to do it. I vowed after those two time taking chores never to own a boat where I had to raise a mast, much less a 32 foot Corsair or other, plus big rotating mast. Yes to the convenience of trailering but I would bet the ranch your Chip will get traded for an suv with a big engine and muscle if you buy anything above 32' and you get really tired of raising and lowering a mast. Just four years of experience raising masts. Does it work? Yes, Is it time consuming? Big time. Good luck.

We didn't initially get a trailer with our Corsair 37 because of the obvious challenges -- it's 'transportable' rather than 'trailerable.' But after of few years of sailing up and down the east coast we will be attempting to tow her next spring for the first time ... hoping it goes well, since otherwise the 37 is the perfect combination (at least in our price range, haha) of performance and comfort. Being able to take it (not without some effort, of course) cross-continent will be the cherry on the sundae!

I have a Corsair 28n and I'm 6.2 tall. With these boats you'll learn that you spend 90% of your time top side, and 10% camping below. With the Companionway up, there is plenty of head room. I wouldn't want anything bigger than the 28. It's very trailerable, seaworthy and will be great up in the North Channel and Painted rocks. We looked at the 880 and loved it, but the 28 came up and was a lot less $$ and because it has been a GL boat it's entire life, it was in perfect shape. The original owner never used the cabin so it was in like new condition. Good luck!

Just a thought. Sell "Chip" get a 1-ton truck with a truck bed camper. It would be more than enough truck to pull a sailboat of the size you're looking for. We have a 2019 Ford F350 1-Ton 4x4 pickup, we have a 2020 Arctic Fox 811 4-Season pickup camper. We also pull a 3200# 4x4 SUV with us. Our camper is fully self contained with large water, sewer and gray tanks, generator, shower, toilet, etc. I mention this to maybe consider this as an option as a tow vehicle with a living quarters that can pull a boat. Plus you can drop the truck camper wherever you like.

So, your land you purchased is where in Michigan? I just didn’t remember you actually bought…Grand Haven? You are right to be cautions about dropping something - even a drill….but, the V-birth needs some sealing…but you, both, are great at repairs…the “echo” might be solved with some sound deadening material here and there on the walls. You can do that trip into Canada, right?, if you can lower the mast which must be easily doable. Well, I hope you achieve many subscribers. Love watching you guys transform your experiences with your new family. However, you’re overestimating what Chip can tow. It cannot handle over a 20 foot boat. It isn’t just about the weight. The length of the boat matters more than the weight when it comes to the stability of the tow vehicle. You’ll need a truck.

I don't see the use for trimarans. They are a compromise of negatives. They have smaller interiors than a mono hull and a catamaran, but with a cat you can travel between hull inside the central part, but trimarans you can only access the outer hulls by going outside. in rough weather forget about going to the outer hulls. lost space, lost usage.
@kevinfisher1345
@kevinfisher1345 Жыл бұрын
There are trimarans where the main hull is the same size and volume as a mono. And the tri hulls are thin and only for extra storage. Storage that you do not need to have access to during rough weather. Any add'l storage is not lost, it is more. Have no clue how you came up with that analogy.

Is a house child friendly? Not really. So many hazardous things in every house. Outlets, stairs, sharp corners, kitchen drawers, fireplaces, hot scolding water, bathtubs, etc. Heck our 1.5 yo grandkid just a couple of days ago was brought home by some neighbor lady. She had worked out how to unlock, open and climb out her bedroom window before her parents woke up in the morning. So even windows are not child friendly. But you can make them more child friendly, just as I did by improving the lock on her window. People have lived around so many hazards with kids for eons.
