I was looking for one on the side of a busy street with my dad and I couldn't find it. A full-size cargo truck was in the center lane trying to make a left-hand turn and the driver shouts "hey are you geocaching? Want a hint?" And he yelled out this hint from like fifty feet away and I found it and he gave a double thumbs up. Cool dude.

When I was a kid, my dad took me, my brother, and sister geocaching almost every weekend. We all groaned and complained, especially when the weather got bad during a trip, but 10-15 years later, I miss those afternoons spent wandering through the woods. I learned how to read a GPS, visit nature without disturbing it, and best of all, got to spend time with the best dad in the world.

Very nice story. Some good childhood memories! Partially due to Geocaching! Back in those days there weren't that many caches around. Now over 3 million. I hope to take my future kids out geocaching and make memories, like your dad did!
@gadgetpatch99754 жыл бұрын
Had similar experiences with my own biodad and siblings. We'd use geocaching to structure our hikes, go seeking out neat places, and hoping to find a Travel Bug/Trackable to help get to their destination. I generally enjoyed it, but sometimes I groaned too, but I have a lot of fond memories of those hunts. Even managed to dragged some friends out a handful of times since! Good memories.

My favorite moment related to geocaching came when I was hiking in a park near my house. There is this big birch forest with a HUGE cliff - I was making a nature video and hiked to the top, panning across the landscape at the top. I tilted down and BOOM - big wooden crate on a ledge in the middle of the cliff. I climbed down, opened it, took a little toy and left something, then signed it. A week or two later I received an email - the geocache was made by an old friend of mine for a Scout project and we hadn't spoken in a LONG LONG time. Really great memory.
@cachetheline4 жыл бұрын
WOW, that's an amazing discovery. And you weren't geocaching then? I love hearing stories of people discovering geocaches by accident - and doing exactly what one is supposed to do with a geocache :) (too many get destroyed and muggled, unfortunately). Scouts make some great geocaches too. Very cool

The best geocache I've ever found, I was walking around a state park looking on the ground and I couldn't find anything anywhere. I then look up and right at my eye level there's a big old squirrel on a tree right in front of me that scared the bejesus out of me. I then realize that this squirrel is not moving and is fake. Turns out the squirrel was the geocache and it had a little waterproof container that was stuck in a hole that had been drilled out *ahem* just below his tail......I laughed for so long at that cache.

My dad has been super into geocaching since about 2007, and has found over 4000 caches and set up dozens of his own ones. It was a great family activity to do growing up. We’re a pretty outdoorsy family so we would do lots of off the beaten path caches. We did a fair number of 5 star terrain caches (for a cache to have a 5 star terrain rating they have to require special equipment to access like abseiling or climbing gear), a memorable one was where we had to traverse across a canyon to get to the cache on a cliff. On the way back I slipped and badly broke my finger and that was our 2000th cache.

A couple of geocaching notes during COVID-19: *Please make sure to check websites and social accounts of local officials, parks, trails, etc for what you're allowed to do outside. For instance, where I'm at the city parks are closed, and national & state parks nearby don't allow cars to park, but you can hike or bike in. Some cache owners are leaving their caches live even when the location around them is closed so pleeeeease triple check. *If you learn that cache is unavailable during this time, make a comment in the virtual log! I'm sure people who are geocaching this time will definitely appreciate it. *If you live in busy areas, pleeeeeeeeease bring your own pen, and if you're fortunate enough, bring some hand sanitizer. Caches are touched by hundreds of people, over the course of months. So. Stay safe. *Read the description carefully. It may tell you where to park, enter, etc. Sometimes caches are on the side of the highway that may make things dangerous if you don't pay attention. *If a cache is broken, water logged, stolen etc. make sure to comment that on the virtual log.

Yes, it's a judgment call everyone needs to make in their region if they're legally still allowed do what geocaching requires. Safest is give it up for a bit, but if it's not illegal, then be clean and safe while doing it! In many areas it's most likely safer than many 'essential' activities :)

It's interesting to think geocaching might be in a lull right now -- with technology how it is, I feel like geocaching could go absolutely mental now. Imagine finding like, an Augmented Reality QR code on a card in a geocache that has a hologram message or something like that. The possibilities feel literally endless.
@cachetheline4 жыл бұрын
Absolutely! I don't personally think it's in a lull - there are more people joining and trying it out (especially now during the crisis) but the past few years Geocaching HQ has been trying out loads of ways to invigorate the game with souvenirs, challenges, loads of collectible items, games, social events... I think it's very different from those early years (though the core is still the same!) but so are people :) It's awesome right now! They even tested out an AR geocache type for a while to see how it would fare, given so much of the community uses smartphone. I made an AR cache that utilized a local movie theater's movie times billboard :) And you sure can put things into a geocache that use augmented reality - like personalized calling cards.

Word of advice for anyone that wants to geocache with their family: DON'T GO OVERBOARD. My mom would make it so almost every weekend or everywhere we went we had to get at least one geocache. We're in deep south Texas, it's HOT, there's tons brush, thorns, cacti, etc and most of the ones she'd pick were all up in that business. She would plan out like 30 to 50 and expect us to be engaged and having a good time. I was a little kid and I totally agree with Justin that geocaching is a great way to see things that you normally wouldn't, but my mom made geocaching feel like an absolute garbage chore that was all about numbers. I haven't geocached in years and I would like to try again, but now every time I think about doing it I just remember how miserable I felt and decide not to. DON'T. GO OVERBOARD.
@cachetheline4 жыл бұрын
Oh man, that's unfortunate. One benefit of solo geocaching is you don't have to worry about other people being on board. We have many geocachers around here who are married or have children and they're the only ones out geocaching most, if not all, of the time, probably on the agreement that it's "their thing" :). I think if you find someone who loves it as much as you do, you're quite fortunate! Maybe you could try it out again, find a friend or two who you enjoy geocaching with, or just go out solo, and explore!
@DaBayleef4 жыл бұрын
@@cachetheline I might try that! Maybe. I'd have to somehow do it without my mom's knowledge because there would definitely be hurt feelings and she would probably stop talking to me for a while :/

So many friends being unable to get out geocaching together right now, and so many cancelled events... :( It's such a social hobby! It's quite a big thing even! Over 3 million geocaches hidden all over the world, in the most unthinkable and remote locations! It's so much fun!! Not many people know about it though. I'm happy to see someone like Justin promoting it!
@cachetheline4 жыл бұрын
It's a worldwide thing for sure! It may be on hold a bit in various regions depending on local regulations, but it's absolutely going full force and the UK is very active. :)

I remember we actually had a unit in middle school P.E that was all about geocaching, we even had this fancy schmancy little phone type device that we used to find the ones that were hidden throughout our little town. In high school I took a photography class where we got to go on a field trip to a huge state park with huge climbable cliffs and stuff like that where me and my friends accidentally stumbled upon a cache hidden in a cracked rock !!! There was a notebook to write names in it and the next year when we took a different photography class we found it again ! Every time I go back to that park I always make an effort to try and find it

I'm going to leave a comment here, because comments are (probably smartly) turned off for the Charlie & Daddy Show, but coming from a home with no kids (by choice, due to health problems), with a husband who is a doctoral level child psychologist... every bit with Justin and Charlie gives me life, and I love it! I live vicariously through you. What a strong, opinionated, bold, awesome little girl you have!!

So I saw some video being mentioned a whole lot on twitter about Justin McElroy talking about geocaching, and getting people into the hobby. I look it and BOOM here it is! :D Time to watch! haha I've been geocaching almost 11 years now too, and vlogging about for 2 1/2 years. Definitely interested in this ;)

Very well explained! Let's welcome more people to the beautiful world that is Geocaching! Even though at the moment, you can't go Geocaching in some countries due to Covid-19. Love your examples about food and animals in/around caches. It's part of the adventure! 😁🤣

I stopped geocaching for moral reasons, because a geocaching club in my city decided to remove the geocache I made >:( elitists
@TheCuriousKiwis4 жыл бұрын
Oh! 😲 That's sad!! Why did they remove it?
@Anilikedifranco4 жыл бұрын
The Curious Kiwis they didn’t give much explanation, I think maybe it was because it was on an island in a lake, but that’s part of the fun, and nobody was obligated to go for a swim
@outdatedmeme49634 жыл бұрын
@@Anilikedifranco that sounds like so much fun, though!!
@cachetheline4 жыл бұрын
A geocaching club removed your geocache?? That's weird and just wrong! If it was placed on public land or with permission, they have no right, and they should know that. I hope you consider trying it again. You could put their geocaches on your ignore list if you really want :)
