Pick something cheap and see if you make it through the required sanding. My interest in woodworking as a personal hobby almost disappeared by the time I got done sanding my first project. Boring, dusty, and mind numbing.

As a knitter, here are some tips on sounding like you care about knitting: 1. “What a pretty pattern/color/yarn!” We’re magpies, we like to talk about our pretty things. Complementing this is pretty much complementing our taste. 2. If you see any lace, cables, or colorwork: “That has to be tricky, how was the pattern?” For certain masochists, the difficulty of a pattern is a source of pride. Pointing out the hell that they put themselves through will stroke their ego, which works to your favor. 3. “What Fiber is it?” You won’t care. If it’s cotton, say something like “that’ll be nice in the summer”. If it’s wool, say “that’ll be cozy in the winter”. If it’s silk/alpaca/bamboo/anything weird, ask “how was that to work with” because they definitely want to talk about it. If it’s acrylic, say nothing. They know what they’ve done. 4. “Weaving in the ends had to be a pain” This is the knitting equivalent of sanding. Everyone hates it and if they say they do they’re a liar. 5. “How are you doing on Christmas presents?” It doesn’t matter what time of year you ask, they will have an answer. Even if it’s January, they’ll probably groan and say they need to get started. It’s July right now and I’m running super late. 5. If you want to get a rant going “what are your opinions on the sweater curse?” Legend says that if you make a sweater for your significant other, the relationship will end. It’s real, trust me. They’ll probably have some theories on why it works, and would be happy to share their tinfoil hat with you. 6. NEVER ask if they can make you something. They are powered by spite and will never make you anything after you ask. Keep complementing their work and showing interest and they might make you a hat. Go fourth and make Christmas with Nani, gran gran, and quirky cousin Eliza a bit less awkward

Loren Daemon yep, there’s a whole Wikipedia page on it. Proposed mechanisms include Rescue Mission (aka trying to save a dying relationship), Insufficient Gratitude (aka what you described), and Catalyst for Analysing the Relationship (aka actually stopping to think “is this idiot who cares more about the football game than me really worth the time I spent on this fucking sweater?”). I’m guessing a good few come from the latter...

What's a finish? (Want to know so I don't ask "what finish is this?" in the wrong situation and look silly.)
@danielwilson5422
@danielwilson5422 3 жыл бұрын
boudicathebrave Kinda just what it sounds like, it’s a coat of some substance you use to “finish” the project. Some stay on the surface like a coating(lacquer/shellac), while others seep into the wood (oil, wax). The common thing with finishes is you’ll still be able to see the wood grain, unlike paint. Also sometimes people stain wood before finishing, which soaks into the wood to change the color while maintaining the grain patterns. Also sometimes the stain will have a finish build in, kinda like 2 in 1 shampoo/conditioner. I might be missing something but that’s what I remember from shop class.
@danielwilson5422
@danielwilson5422 3 жыл бұрын
boudicathebrave Also when you respond I think something like “good choice” would be the best compliment. Applying a finish isn’t usually too hard, so it’s more about choosing the right one for the project. Beyond that, just emphasize the “cleanliness” of the coat like Justin mentioned.

the tone all of this information is presented is so lovely - it's evident you've really got a knack for teaching! i had to learn carpentry/woodworking out of necessity, so i never really felt the kind of joyful enthusiasm you've got here as someone discovering a fulfilling new hobby. (never had a chill 1v1 with my journeyman dad like this either tbh lol) you've reminded me it can be something fun and fulfilling, not just work to dread. not 2 be sappy, but if a stranger can benefit from a 20 min video, it warms my heart thinking how much your kids will benefit from a lifetime of this kind of guidance.

Or you could just rp in some kind of table top game as a folk-hero/carpenter with a frankly unbelievable amount of proficiencies in different areas and a tragic backstory, but I don't know - it kind of feels like you'd need a lot of rustic hospitality to pull that off.

2:42 PRO TIP when you ask what type of wood it is, if they respond with anything *except* pine, you can respond with "Ah, that's what I thought! :)". Now, this can be a little risky, especially if it is a very exotic wood or perhaps it actually *is* pine and they misspoke. However, if you get this right it can have huge payoff. Not only do you give the impression you can identify woods visually, but more importantly: it send the message that they have been faithful to their medium. Any shlub can put a dark stain on pine, but to work with an old oak and communicate the life of that wood through to the end piece always signifies masterwork. Thanks Justin, great video.

Not to be a bummer but my grandfather passed away late March shortly after my state went into lockdown, and we weren’t able to have a funeral, but he was really into woodworking after he retired and I just wanted to say thank you for all the woodworking content :p It’s making me very happy and nostalgic for those early weekend mornings in the hardware stores with him. I have a bookcase and a desk that he made for me (and I got to pick the knobs and stains for) Keep up the great work! Your pictures of your projects always make me smile
